Chapter 12: The Secret That Could Destroy Them All
The official report said my father died from natural causes.
I had accepted that.
For twelve years.
I never questioned it.
Because when someone you love dies, sometimes the easiest thing to do is believe the explanation everyone gives you.
You don't want another possibility.
You don't want to imagine something darker.
You want peace.
But peace built on a lie is not peace.
It is a delay.
And now the delay was over.
Daniel placed the new information on my desk.
"We found inconsistencies.""
I looked at the report.
"What kind?""
"The medical records.""
My heart tightened.
"Explain.""
"The hospital documents don't match.""
I stared.
"What?""
"There are missing pages.""
"Missing?""
Daniel nodded.
"And one doctor involved in the case disappeared shortly afterward.""
The room became silent.
I felt anger rising.
Not explosive anger.
The kind that becomes dangerous because it becomes focused.
"Find him.""
"We are trying.""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"Find him.""
Daniel nodded.
Then he hesitated.
"There is more.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"We found a connection between the doctor and Victor Sterling.""
The name hit like a punch.
Of course.
Victor.
Every road led back to him.
But why?
Why would he wait twelve years?
Why manipulate Adrian?
Why attack now?
Unless...
Unless something had changed.
"What's the date of Victor's first contact with Adrian?""
Daniel checked.
"About eleven months ago.""
"And what happened eleven months ago?""
He searched quickly.
Then stopped.
"Eleanor...""
"What?""
He looked at the screen.
"Your father's original trust protection period expired.""
I froze.
"What does that mean?""
Daniel turned the laptop toward me.
"The agreement your father created had a twelve-year protection clause after his death.""
My eyes moved across the document.
"Meaning?""
"Meaning Victor couldn't legally challenge certain assets until now.""
I understood.
My father's death.
Twelve years.
The timeline was not random.
Victor had been waiting.
Waiting for the exact moment when the protections disappeared.
He wasn't returning because of Adrian.
Adrian was simply convenient.
A doorway.
A weakness.
A distraction.
My phone rang.
Adrian.
I almost ignored it.
But I answered.
"What?""
His voice was urgent.
"Eleanor, you need to listen to me.""
I said nothing.
"Victor is making his move tonight.""
My expression changed.
"How do you know?""
"Because he invited me.""
"Where?""
"A private meeting.""
I stood.
"Send me the location.""
A pause.
"No.""
My eyes narrowed.
"What?""
"You can't come.""
"Why?""
"Because if he knows you're involved, he'll change everything.""
I almost laughed.
"You still think you can protect me.""
Silence.
Then quietly:
"I know I don't deserve to.""
That stopped me.
Because it was the first thing Adrian said that wasn't about himself.
"Then why are you helping me?""
Another pause.
"Because I finally understand what I did.""
I closed my eyes.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But acknowledgment mattered.
"Send me the location.""
"Eleanor—"
"Send it.""
A few seconds later, the message arrived.
I looked at the address.
A private warehouse.
Outside the city.
Exactly the kind of place someone would choose if they wanted privacy.
Or control.
Daniel entered as I grabbed my coat.
"Where are you going?""
"To meet Victor.""
His expression changed.
"Absolutely not.""
I looked at him.
"Daniel.""
"It's dangerous.""
"So is waiting.""
He knew he couldn't argue.
Because he knew me.
I wasn't reckless.
I was determined.
Before leaving, I took one final look at my father's office.
At his photograph.
At the man who spent his life building something bigger than himself.
"I'll finish what you started.""
Then I walked away.
The warehouse was dark.
Empty.
Too quiet.
I entered alone.
At the center of the room stood Victor Sterling.
Older.
Calmer.
Exactly as I imagined.
He smiled.
"Eleanor Ashcroft.""
I stopped several feet away.
"Victor.""
He looked impressed.
"You came alone.""
"No.""
I looked around.
"I came prepared.""
He laughed softly.
"Your father would have liked that.""
"Don't talk about him.""
His smile faded.
"You still believe he was innocent.""
I stared at him.
"Wasn't he?""
Victor looked at me for a long moment.
Then he said:
"You really don't know.""
My stomach tightened.
"Know what?""
He stepped closer.
"The truth about your father's death.""
The warehouse became silent.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
"Your father wasn't killed because of me.""
I froze.
"Then who?""
Victor looked directly into my eyes.
And whispered:
"Your husband.""
The world stopped.
Because after everything Adrian had done...
After every betrayal...
There was one possibility I had refused to consider.
May you like
That the man who destroyed my marriage...
Might have been connected to destroying my family too.
