Chapter 3: The CEO Who Lost Everything In One Night

By midnight, the headlines had already started spreading.

Not the ones Adrian wanted.

Not the celebration of his fifth anniversary as CEO.

Not the articles praising his leadership.

Instead, every business reporter in the city was asking the same question:

"Who is Eleanor Ashcroft?""

I watched the news alerts appear on my phone while sitting in the back of my car.

The driver remained silent.

He had worked for my family for years.

He knew better than anyone that the woman sitting behind him was not someone who had just lost everything.

She was someone who had finally stopped giving everything away.

Outside the window, the city lights blurred.

Twelve years.

That was how long I had protected Adrian.

Twelve years of standing beside him while he collected praise.

Twelve years of watching strangers call him brilliant.

Twelve years of allowing him to believe he was carrying us both.

But tonight, he showed me something I could never forgive.

He didn't just betray me privately.

He destroyed me publicly because he believed there would be no consequences.

That was the difference between Adrian and me.

He believed power came from being seen.

I knew power came from being prepared.

My phone rang.

My attorney.

"Eleanor, the board has completed the emergency review.""

I looked out at the city.

"And?""

"He has been removed as CEO.""

I closed my eyes.

Not because I was celebrating.

Because a chapter of my life had officially ended.

"Vanessa?""

A pause.

"Her promotion has been suspended pending investigation.""

Good.

But not enough.

There were still questions.

How long had Adrian been planning this?

How much company money had he spent?

How many people had helped him?

Because this was bigger than an affair.

This was betrayal inside a corporation.

"Begin a full audit," I said.

"Every department.""

"Already arranged.""

"And attorney?""

"Yes?""

"Freeze Adrian's executive accounts.""

Another pause.

"That may anger him.""

I looked down at my wedding ring.

The diamond had been chosen by Adrian.

Or at least, I thought it had.

Now I wondered if he even remembered buying it.

"Let him be angry.""

The call ended.

When I arrived home, the mansion was dark.

The same mansion everyone believed belonged to the Vale family.

The same mansion Adrian had invited business partners into while telling them how hard he worked to build his success.

But the truth was written on every document.

Every wall.

Every piece of property.

Ashcroft.

I walked inside.

For the first time in years, the house felt quiet.

Not lonely.

Free.

I poured myself a glass of water and stood by the window.

Then I heard the door open.

Adrian.

Of course.

He still had a key.

For now.

He walked inside without permission.

His suit was still perfect.

But his confidence was gone.

The man who left the gala believing he had won looked completely different.

"Eleanor.""

I didn't turn around.

"You're trespassing.""

He stopped.

"You would really do this?""

I smiled slightly.

"You would really ask me that?""

His jaw tightened.

"You destroyed my career.""

I finally faced him.

"No.""

My voice was calm.

"You destroyed your career when you decided humiliating your wife was more important than protecting your company.""

He stepped closer.

"You could have warned me.""

That sentence shocked me.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it revealed exactly who he was.

He wasn't sorry.

He was angry that he lost.

"I could have.""

I nodded.

"But then you would have changed your behavior because you were afraid.""

He stared at me.

"And?""

"I wanted to know who you really were.""

Silence.

Because he knew.

I had spent years wondering the same thing.

Who was Adrian when nobody was watching?

Tonight, I finally found out.

He lowered his voice.

"You still love me.""

For the first time, I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

"You really believe that?""

His eyes softened.

"You wouldn't have stayed this long if you didn't.""

I looked at the man I married.

The man I once trusted.

The man who had no idea he was standing in the home of the woman who could erase his entire legacy.

"I stayed because I believed in you.""

I paused.

"But you confused my loyalty with weakness.""

His face hardened.

"This isn't over.""

I looked at him.

"No.""

I agreed.

"It isn't.""

Because Adrian was right about one thing.

This was not the end.

It was the beginning.

The next morning, the world would know my name.

The board would know who truly controlled Vale Meridian.

May you like

And Adrian would discover something far more painful than losing his title.

He would discover what happens when the woman he underestimated decides to stop protecting him.
