Chapter 2: The Woman Behind The Empire
The silence after my announcement was louder than any applause.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The ballroom that had been filled with laughter moments earlier suddenly felt like a courtroom.
And Adrian was the man standing on trial.
"You're lying.""
His first words came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
I expected anger.
I expected shouting.
I expected him to accuse me of manipulating everyone.
But what I saw was something much more satisfying.
Fear.
Pure, undeniable fear.
Because Adrian knew me.
Or at least, he thought he did.
He knew the version of me I allowed him to see.
The wife who cooked dinner after his late meetings.
The woman who attended charity events beside him.
The person who smiled politely when his mother insulted my family.
The woman who never argued when he took credit for my father’s business lessons.
He knew Eleanor Vale.
He did not know Eleanor Ashcroft.
And that was his greatest mistake.
"You can't own sixty-eight percent of Vale Meridian," Adrian said.
His voice was louder now.
Desperate.
"Those shares don't exist.""
I looked around the room.
Several executives exchanged confused glances.
They were beginning to understand.
The company records they had access to were incomplete.
The public information showed Adrian as the majority decision-maker.
But private ownership records told a different story.
Ashcroft Holdings had always remained hidden.
My father built it that way.
He believed true power did not need attention.
"The shares exist," I replied.
"And they have existed since before you became CEO.""
Adrian’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Because he remembered.
Five years ago.
When Vale Meridian was nearly destroyed.
When banks refused to provide additional funding.
When investors abandoned the company.
There had been one mysterious investor who saved everything.
An anonymous corporation.
Ashcroft Holdings.
Nobody knew who was behind it.
Nobody except me.
My father had built Ashcroft Holdings decades earlier as a private investment empire.
When he died, people assumed the company would collapse.
They assumed his daughter would sell everything and disappear.
They underestimated me.
Just like Adrian did.
"You knew?"" Marcus whispered.
I looked at him.
"Knew what?""
His expression turned pale.
"Everything.""
I didn't answer.
Because yes.
I knew everything.
I knew about the secret meetings.
I knew about the payments Vanessa received.
I knew about Adrian using company resources to impress her.
I knew about the apartment.
The car.
The expensive gifts.
Every single dollar came through systems I controlled.
The irony was almost poetic.
Adrian had used my money to betray me.
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous.""
Her confidence returned.
She looked at Adrian.
"She is just trying to embarrass you.""
I turned toward her.
"Is that what you think?""
She crossed her arms.
"You expect us to believe you secretly own the company?""
I smiled.
"No.""
I pointed toward the stage.
"I expect the documents to prove it.""
At that exact moment, every executive’s phone received an email.
The sound of notifications echoed throughout the ballroom.
One after another.
People looked down.
Faces changed.
The first person to react was Adrian’s chief financial officer.
His hand shook.
"Adrian...""
He stopped.
He couldn't even finish the sentence.
Adrian grabbed his phone.
I watched his eyes move across the screen.
The shareholder agreement.
The voting rights.
The legal authorization.
My name.
Eleanor Marie Ashcroft.
His wife.
The woman he had publicly called his biggest mistake.
The woman who owned his future.
His face lost all color.
"No.""
He whispered.
"No, this isn't possible.""
I stepped closer.
"Why?""
He looked at me.
"Because I would have known.""
That sentence almost made me laugh.
That was the entire point.
He would have known if he had ever cared enough to look.
"You spent twelve years studying how to become powerful, Adrian.""
I spoke softly.
"But you never spent five minutes trying to understand me.""
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because for a brief moment, I remembered who he used to be.
The young man who sat with me in my father’s office.
The man who told me he didn't care about money.
The man who promised he loved me, not my family name.
I remembered believing him.
And that was the part that hurt.
Not the betrayal.
Not Vanessa.
Not the humiliation.
The worst part was realizing I had loved someone who never truly saw me.
Celeste stood suddenly.
"This is impossible.""
Everyone turned toward her.
She stared at me.
"You?""
I looked at my mother-in-law.
"Yes.""
She shook her head.
"You let us believe...""
"I let you believe exactly what you wanted.""
Her mouth opened.
But no words came out.
Because she knew.
Deep down, she knew.
She had judged me for years.
She had called me lucky.
She had told people Adrian had married beneath him.
Now she discovered the truth.
Adrian had married into something far greater than the Vale family.
He had married into Ashcroft.
A waiter approached the stage.
"Mr. Vale.""
Adrian looked at him.
"The board members are requesting your presence.""
The room became completely still.
Because everyone understood what that meant.
The board was no longer asking.
They were waiting for instructions from the real owner.
Adrian looked at me.
His expression was filled with hatred.
But beneath that hatred was something else.
Regret.
"You planned this.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
I looked around the room.
"Tonight was your plan.""
He swallowed.
"You wanted to destroy me.""
I stepped closer.
"You raised a glass and called me your biggest mistake.""
My voice remained calm.
"But you were wrong.""
The ballroom waited.
I looked directly into his eyes.
"The biggest mistake you made was believing I was powerless.""
For the first time in twelve years, Adrian had nothing to say.
And that was when I knew.
May you like
The marriage was over.
But the war had only begun.
