Chapter 10: The Betrayal Written Before I Was Born

The document sat on my desk for hours.

I didn't touch it.

I didn't move it.

I simply stared at it.

Because sometimes the most dangerous truths were not the ones that shocked you.

They were the ones that changed everything you thought you knew.

For my entire life, I believed Ashcroft Holdings was my father’s legacy.

A company built through discipline.

Through sacrifice.

Through decades of careful decisions.

I believed my father had left me an empire because he trusted me to protect it.

But now I discovered there was another name attached to that legacy.

Sterling.

Victor Sterling.

The man who had spent years trying to destroy my family.

The man who had manipulated my husband.

The man who was now moving closer to everything my father built.

Daniel sat across from me.

Neither of us spoke for several minutes.

Finally, he broke the silence.

"There is something we need to consider.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"If this agreement is legitimate, Victor may have legal claims.""

I looked back at the document.

"Claims based on a partnership my father never told me about.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

My father had prepared me for almost everything.

Business.

Negotiation.

Strategy.

Risk.

But he never prepared me for discovering that half of my inheritance was connected to the one man who wanted me destroyed.

"Why would he hide this from me?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Because he knew.

He knew the answer would hurt.

"Maybe he wanted to protect you.""

I shook my head.

"Protection through secrets?""

My voice became sharper.

"That's exactly what Adrian did.""

The comparison surprised even me.

But it was true.

Both men had made decisions for me.

Both men believed they knew what was best.

Both men underestimated my ability to handle the truth.

I spent my entire life being protected from problems I had the strength to face.

And that ended now.

"I want everything," I said.

Daniel looked at me.

"Everything?""

"Every document related to the partnership.""

He nodded.

"Already searching.""

"And find out why Victor disappeared.""

"We're working on it.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"Not working.""

My voice hardened.

"Find.""

Daniel understood.

This was not a request.

This was a mission.

That afternoon, I visited my father's old office.

It had remained untouched since his death.

Everyone thought it was because I couldn't let go.

That wasn't true.

I kept it because something inside me always believed there were answers there.

The room smelled like old leather and cedar.

The same desk.

The same shelves.

The same photographs.

I walked slowly around the room.

Then I noticed something.

A painting.

One I had seen thousands of times.

A landscape.

Nothing special.

Except tonight, I noticed the frame.

It was slightly uneven.

I removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a small compartment.

My heart started beating faster.

Inside was a letter.

Not addressed to me.

To Victor.

I opened it carefully.

Victor,

If you are reading this, then I failed to make you understand.

I stopped.

The words immediately pulled me in.

My father continued.

You believe I stole your future. You believe I destroyed your name. But the truth is that your own choices did that.

I read faster.

I tried to save you from yourself.

The room became quiet.

Because I realized something.

My father wasn't afraid of Victor.

He was disappointed in him.

The letter continued.

You wanted power without responsibility. You wanted success without consequences. When I refused to support your actions, you called me your enemy.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Then came the final paragraph.

But if you ever return, know this. Eleanor is not the child you remember. She is stronger than both of us. Do not underestimate her as you underestimated me.

I stopped reading.

My father had written about me.

He knew.

He knew someday I would have to face Victor.

And he believed I could.

For the first time since discovering the truth, I felt something other than anger.

I felt ready.

That evening, Victor Sterling called me.

I answered.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I wanted him to know I was no longer hiding.

"Eleanor Ashcroft.""

His voice was calm.

Almost polite.

"Victor.""

A quiet laugh.

"Your father would be proud.""

"Don't mention my father.""

A pause.

"You sound exactly like him.""

"I am not him.""

"No.""

His voice became colder.

"You're worse.""

I smiled slightly.

"Is that supposed to scare me?""

"No.""

He paused.

"It's supposed to warn you.""

I looked out the window.

"You're trying to take Ashcroft Holdings.""

"I am trying to reclaim what was taken from me.""

"My father saved you.""

"He humiliated me.""

"You betrayed him.""

Silence.

For the first time, his calm disappeared.

"You don't know what happened.""

"Then tell me.""

Another pause.

"No.""

I waited.

"Because you would still choose him.""

I frowned.

"Choose who?""

"My father?""

"No.""

His answer came quietly.

"Your husband.""

The line went silent.

"What does Adrian have to do with this?""

Victor laughed.

A cold, humorless sound.

"Everything.""

My stomach tightened.

"What did you do to him?""

"I didn't do anything.""

"Then why is he involved?""

"Because Adrian Vale is proof that history repeats itself.""

I gripped the phone.

"Explain.""

Victor's voice lowered.

"Your father trusted the wrong people.""

A pause.

"And now you did the same.""

Before I could answer, he hung up.

I stood there in silence.

Because one thing was clear.

Victor wasn't just attacking my company.

He was attacking my beliefs.

My judgment.

My ability to trust.

May you like

And the most frightening part?

He knew exactly where to hurt me.
