Chapter 13: The Truth Adrian Tried To Bury Forever

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The warehouse around me disappeared.

The cold concrete floor.

The dim lights.

The distant sound of rain against the metal roof.

Everything faded except one sentence.

*Your husband.*

Victor Sterling watched my reaction carefully.

He expected anger.

Shock.

Maybe even collapse.

But he didn't know me.

Not anymore.

I had spent twelve years learning how to hide my emotions from the world.

Especially from people who wanted to use them against me.

"Explain.""

My voice was steady.

Victor smiled slightly.

"You sound like your father.""

"I said explain.""

The smile disappeared.

"Adrian Vale was involved in your father's final days.""

I stared at him.

"No.""

The word escaped before I could stop it.

Not because I trusted Adrian.

That trust was gone.

But because some truths were too painful to accept.

Victor stepped closer.

"You think betrayal starts with an affair?""

I said nothing.

"It doesn't.""

His voice became colder.

"It starts when someone convinces themselves they deserve more than they have.""

I thought about Adrian.

His insecurity.

His obsession with being admired.

His anger toward Ashcroft.

"Adrian met your father years before you knew.""

My eyes narrowed.

"What?""

Victor continued.

"Your father saw potential in him.""

I remembered.

The first time Adrian entered my father's office.

The confidence.

The ambition.

The way my father looked at him.

He had liked Adrian.

He had believed in him.

"He considered making Adrian his successor.""

My stomach tightened.

"That's impossible.""

"No.""

Victor shook his head.

"That's exactly what happened.""

I felt a strange emptiness.

Because suddenly, I understood.

Adrian didn't just want my company.

He wanted my father's approval.

The approval he never received from his own family.

"What changed?""

Victor looked at me.

"Your father discovered Adrian wasn't who he appeared to be.""

The rain outside grew louder.

"What did he find?""

Victor hesitated.

Then answered:

"Financial manipulation.""

My face hardened.

"Adrian?""

"He was young. He thought he was smarter than everyone.""

I closed my eyes briefly.

That sounded exactly like him.

"He created deals that benefited himself.""

Victor continued.

"Your father confronted him.""

"And?""

"Adrian begged for another chance.""

I looked away.

Because that was Adrian's pattern.

He always regretted consequences.

Never choices.

"What does this have to do with my father's death?""

Victor's expression changed.

"Your father planned to remove Adrian from your life.""

The words hit harder than expected.

Not because of Adrian.

Because my father knew.

He knew something was wrong.

"He wrote a letter.""

I froze.

"What letter?""

"One you were never supposed to receive.""

My heart raced.

"Where is it?""

Victor didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across it.

My father's handwriting.

Again.

For the second time in days, I saw words from the man I lost.

I reached for it.

Victor didn't release it.

"Before I give this to you, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"I did terrible things.""

The honesty surprised me.

"But Adrian did worse.""

I looked at him.

"Why are you telling me this?""

His eyes became darker.

"Because I thought revenge would make me feel better.""

A pause.

"It didn't.""

For the first time, Victor looked less like an enemy.

More like a broken man.

"I spent twenty years blaming your father.""

He looked at the letter.

"But the truth is, he tried to save me from myself.""

I took the envelope.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Inside was another piece of my father's truth.

Eleanor,

If you are reading this, then I was unable to tell you myself.

My heart tightened.

I continued.

Adrian Vale is not the man he claims to be.

I stopped.

The words blurred.

My father knew.

He knew.

The letter continued.

I wanted to believe he could change. I wanted to believe ambition could be guided by loyalty. I was wrong.

I closed my eyes.

The next sentence broke something inside me.

*The greatest danger to you will never be the enemy standing across from you. It will be the person standing beside you who believes they are entitled to what is yours.*

I lowered the letter.

Victor watched silently.

"Your father discovered Adrian had been searching for information about Ashcroft ownership.""

My hands tightened.

"He was planning this?""

"Yes.""

"How long?""

"Years.""

I felt sick.

Not heartbroken.

Not anymore.

Just betrayed by the reality that I had ignored.

"Why didn't my father tell me?""

Victor answered quietly.

"Because he hoped you would see Adrian's true nature before he had to hurt you.""

I looked at the letter again.

My father had been trying to protect me.

But he made the same mistake everyone else made.

He thought I needed protection.

He didn't understand.

I didn't need someone to save me.

I needed the truth.

"Where is Adrian now?""

Victor looked toward the warehouse entrance.

"He knows you're here.""

My head snapped up.

"What?""

A sound came from behind me.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Familiar.

I turned.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

Rain covered his coat.

His face was pale.

He looked at the letter in my hand.

And for the first time in my life…

He looked afraid of me.

"Eleanor.""

My voice was barely a whisper.

"How long were you going to let me believe you had nothing to do with this?""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was all the answer I needed.

Adrian lowered his eyes.

"I didn't kill your father.""

The sentence shocked me.

Because it wasn't a denial.

It was a defense.

"What did you do?""

He looked broken.

"I made a choice.""

I stepped closer.

"What choice?""

His voice cracked.

"The choice that ruined everything.""

The warehouse went silent.

Then Adrian whispered:

"I helped Victor get close to your family.""

And that was the moment I understood.

The man who destroyed my marriage…

May you like

Had also helped destroy my trust.

Maybe even my life.
