Chapter 11: The Man Who Finally Told The Truth
I found Adrian at a place I never expected.
Not his apartment.
Not a restaurant.
Not a luxury office.
A small, quiet bar on the edge of the city.
The kind of place powerful men went when they wanted to disappear.
He sat alone.
No assistants.
No security.
No people trying to impress him.
Just Adrian.
For the first time, he looked like the man I met twelve years ago.
Not the CEO.
Not the public figure.
Just a man who had lost everything.
He looked up when I approached.
"You found me.""
"I wasn't looking for you.""
He smiled faintly.
"That sounds like something you would say.""
I sat across from him.
"We need to talk.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
For once, he didn't argue.
Didn't defend himself.
Didn't blame me.
That was almost more unsettling.
"Victor called me.""
Adrian looked down.
"Of course he did.""
"You knew about the partnership.""
He didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
"When?""
"Before the gala.""
I stared at him.
"You knew.""
His eyes met mine.
"Yes.""
The honesty hurt more than another lie would have.
"How long?""
"Six months.""
I felt something inside me break.
Not love.
That was already gone.
Respect.
The last small piece of respect I had left.
"You knew Victor was trying to take Ashcroft.""
"I didn't know everything.""
"But you knew enough.""
He looked away.
"I thought he was helping me.""
I laughed quietly.
"You really believed that?""
His jaw tightened.
"He gave me opportunities.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"He gave you permission.""
He looked confused.
"Permission?""
"To become the person you always wanted to be.""
The words landed.
Because Adrian knew they were true.
Victor didn't create his arrogance.
He only encouraged it.
"He told me you were holding me back.""
I looked at him.
"And you believed him.""
"I was tired.""
"Tired of what?""
His voice became emotional.
"Of always being second.""
I stared.
"Second?""
"To your father.""
There it was.
The insecurity that had poisoned everything.
"My father was dead.""
"It didn't matter.""
He looked frustrated.
"Everyone knew the company survived because of Ashcroft.""
"And?""
"I wanted it to be mine.""
I nodded slowly.
"Thank you.""
He frowned.
"For what?""
"For finally saying the truth.""
He looked at me.
"I loved you.""
I almost believed him.
Almost.
But then I remembered the ballroom.
The laughter.
Vanessa.
The glass raised in celebration of my humiliation.
"If you loved me, Adrian, you would have protected me.""
His eyes dropped.
"I know.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You don't.""
He looked up.
"You think the worst thing you did was cheating.""
Silence.
"The worst thing you did was convincing yourself I deserved it.""
His face changed.
Because that was the truth he couldn't escape.
After a moment, he whispered:
"Victor has something.""
"What?""
"Information.""
I waited.
"He knows about your father's death.""
My body went still.
"What does that mean?""
Adrian looked nervous.
"I don't know.""
"Adrian.""
"I swear.""
His voice cracked.
"I don't know everything.""
I studied him.
For the first time, I believed him.
Because Adrian was many things.
But he was not a person who could hide fear.
"What did Victor tell you?""
"He said your father didn't die naturally.""
The world stopped.
I stared at him.
"What?""
Adrian swallowed.
"He said your father was betrayed.""
My fingers went cold.
"No.""
"Eleanor—"
"No.""
I stood.
Because there were some things you weren't ready to hear.
Some wounds that reopened instantly.
My father had died suddenly.
A heart condition.
That was what everyone told me.
That was what I believed.
"You knew this?""
Adrian looked ashamed.
"I didn't know if it was true.""
"You knew and said nothing?""
"I was trying to find out.""
I stared at him.
"You were planning to destroy me while investigating my father's death?""
His silence was enough.
I turned away.
I couldn't look at him.
Not because I hated him.
Because I realized something.
The man I married had been standing beside me while pieces of my life were being taken apart.
And he never noticed.
"I need everything you know.""
He looked at me.
"Why?""
"Because if Victor is connected to my father's death...""
I faced him.
"This is no longer business.""
Adrian looked afraid.
"What are you going to do?""
I picked up my coat.
"What I should have done years ago.""
I walked away.
This time, Adrian didn't stop me.
Because he knew.
The woman leaving that room was not his wife.
May you like
She was Eleanor Ashcroft.
And she was coming for the truth.
