Chapter 9: The Police Report That Changed Everything

The police officer asked us to remain in the basement while he contacted his supervisor.

I stood beside Mom, still holding the black leather ledger.

Olivia had stopped recording.

Richard was speaking quietly with another officer near the stairs.

Daniel had already disappeared.

I wanted to chase him.

I wanted to grab him by his expensive suit and demand answers about my father.

But I knew that was exactly what he wanted.

Instead, I took a breath and looked at the officer.

"Can I see the report?""

He hesitated.

"Are you Marcus Bennett?""

"Yes.""

He handed me a printed copy.

The complaint had been filed at 8:12 that morning.

The reporting party was Vanessa Bennett.

It stated that Eleanor Bennett had been experiencing memory problems and had been taken from her residence by her son without permission.

It also claimed that I had removed confidential documents from the foundation's archive and threatened Daniel Mercer during a confrontation.

I read the statement twice.

There was a section describing my mother's supposed medical condition.

It claimed she had become confused, paranoid, and increasingly aggressive.

I looked at Mom.

She was standing perfectly still.

Her eyes were fixed on the page.

"She wrote this about me?"" she whispered.

I folded the report.

"Mom, don't read it.""

But she reached for it.

"I want to see.""

I handed it to her.

She read the allegations slowly.

Then she looked at me.

"Marcus, I have never told Vanessa I was confused.""

"I know.""

"I have never threatened anyone.""

"I know, Mom.""

Her voice cracked.

"Why would she do this?""

I didn't have an answer.

The officer cleared his throat.

"Mr. Bennett, we need to establish that your mother is here voluntarily.""

Mom stepped forward.

"My name is Eleanor Bennett. I am seventy-eight years old. I came here because I wanted to recover documents belonging to my late husband.""

The officer nodded.

"Are you being held against your will?""

"No.""

"Has your son threatened you?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Do you understand why we're asking?""

Mom looked at him.

"Because my daughter-in-law has decided that telling the truth is less convenient than inventing a story.""

The officer almost smiled.

"All right, ma'am.""

Richard approached.

"I can provide documentation establishing Eleanor's legal authority over the foundation's records.""

He handed over a folder.

Inside were copies of board resolutions, trustee appointments, and property records.

The officer reviewed them.

Then he looked at the ledger.

"What's in there?""

"Evidence of financial fraud," Richard answered.

The officer frowned.

"Do you have a warrant?""

"No," Richard replied.

"The documents were found in a room authorized for foundation access.""

The officer nodded.

"Then don't alter anything. We'll document the location and preserve the material.""

I was relieved.

At least someone was treating this seriously.

But as we climbed the stairs, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"What do you want?""

Her voice sounded frightened.

"Marcus, where is Eleanor?""

I stared at the screen.

"You're the one who filed the missing-person report.""

"Because you took her!""

"She's standing right beside me.""

"Put her on the phone.""

I handed Mom my phone.

She held it close to her ear.

"Vanessa?""

A pause.

Then Mom's face changed.

"What?""

She listened again.

"That's not true.""

Another pause.

"Vanessa, please stop.""

Mom handed the phone back.

I put it to my ear.

"What did you say to her?""

Vanessa was crying.

"Marcus, you need to bring her home.""

"She's already home.""

"Daniel says the police are involved.""

"Daniel is the reason the police are involved.""

Vanessa lowered her voice.

"Listen to me. You don't understand what you've uncovered.""

"Then explain it.""

"I can't.""

"You can't or you won't?""

She began crying harder.

"Daniel has people who can make this disappear. If you keep pushing, you'll destroy everyone.""

I looked at Richard.

He was watching me carefully.

"Are you threatening me?""

"No! I'm trying to protect you!""

"Then tell me the truth.""

Vanessa went silent.

Finally, she whispered:

"There's something in that ledger that isn't about Daniel.""

"What?""

"Marcus, your father wasn't the only person involved in those transactions.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who else?""

She inhaled shakily.

"Your mother.""

I looked at Mom.

She was standing near the doorway, watching me.

"Explain.""

Vanessa's voice dropped to almost nothing.

"She signed the original agreement. She knew exactly where the money was going.""

I felt a wave of anger.

"That's impossible.""

"Read the last page of the ledger.""

"Why?""

"Because it has her signature.""

I stared at the phone.

Then Vanessa said:

"And there's another signature beside it.""

The call ended.

I lowered my phone.

Olivia approached.

"What happened?""

I told her.

She looked at Mom.

"Do you know what she's talking about?""

Mom's expression was unreadable.

"I signed many documents after your father's death.""

"Did you sign an agreement involving Daniel?""

Mom nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because it wasn't what Vanessa is making it sound like.""

Richard stepped forward.

"We need to examine the ledger before making assumptions.""

We returned to the foundation office.

The officers had finished documenting the basement.

They allowed Richard to take custody of the ledger after completing the necessary records.

He placed it on a conference table and carefully opened the first page.

There were hundreds of entries.

Dates.

Account numbers.

Transaction amounts.

Initials.

My father had kept meticulous records.

Richard turned several pages.

"These are the original transfers.""

Olivia leaned closer.

"Can you identify the second account?""

Richard nodded.

"Yes. It's the protected beneficiary account.""

He continued reading.

Then he stopped.

His finger rested on a line near the bottom of the page.

*TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION — $1,200,000.*

Beside the amount were two signatures.

My father's.

And my mother's.

I looked at her.

"Mom?""

She didn't move.

Richard turned the page.

There was a handwritten note beneath the transaction.

Payment authorized under the family settlement agreement. Beneficiary to remain confidential until the legal restrictions expire.

I stared at the words.

"Who received the money?""

Richard adjusted his glasses.

"The account number is incomplete here. We need the original banking records.""

Olivia looked at Mom.

"Was it my money?""

Mom shook her head.

"No.""

"Then whose?""

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

She reached toward the ledger.

"Marcus, before you judge me, you need to understand why I signed that agreement.""

I took a breath.

"Then tell me.""

She looked at Richard.

He nodded reluctantly.

Mom spoke.

"Your father discovered that Daniel had been moving money through a private account. But Daniel wasn't working alone.""

I felt my heart begin to race.

"Who was helping him?""

Mom looked directly at me.

Then she said:

"Someone who had access to our family finances.""

I stared at the signatures.

My father.

My mother.

And the initials beside the next transaction.

*M.B.*

I looked at Richard.

"What does M.B. mean?""

He didn't answer.

I turned toward Mom.

"Who is M.B.?""

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"Marcus Bennett.""

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

My own initials.

My name.

On a financial record dated twenty-seven years earlier.

I was nineteen years old when that transaction happened.

I had been a college student, working part-time at a grocery store, barely able to afford textbooks.

I looked at Mom.

"Why is my name here?""

She reached for my hand.

"Because your father used your identity to protect something.""

"Protect what?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know everything. But I know he was trying to keep Daniel from finding the real beneficiary.""

Richard slowly closed the ledger.

Then he looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

"Marcus, I think we need to find the original bank records immediately.""

"Why?""

"Because if your initials were used to authorize that transfer, someone may have opened a financial account in your name before you were old enough to understand what was happening.""

Olivia stared at me.

"Are you saying Marcus was involved?""

Richard shook his head.

"No. I'm saying someone may have used him.""

My phone vibrated again.

A new message from Vanessa.

*Don't let Eleanor tell you that she protected you. Ask her what happened to the original eight million dollars after your father died.*

A second message followed.

*And ask her why she made you the beneficiary of an account you never knew existed.*

I looked up.

Mom was crying silently.

Then Richard opened his briefcase and removed a sealed document.

"I was hoping I would never have to show you this," he said.

He placed it on the table.

The heading read:

*CONFIDENTIAL BENEFICIARY AGREEMENT — MARCUS BENNETT.*

My signature appeared at the bottom.

But I had never seen the document before.

And the date beside it was six months after my father's death.

Richard looked at me.

"Marcus, your father didn't just leave you an inheritance.""

He paused.

"He left you legal control over something Daniel Mercer has spent twenty-seven years trying to recover.""

I stared at the document.

Then I read the final line.

*BENEFICIARY SHALL ASSUME CONTROL UPON REACHING THE AGE OF FORTY-FIVE.*

I was forty-six.

May you like

Which meant the account had already become legally mine.

And someone had just spent the last several months trying to make sure I never found out.
