Chapter 10: The Inheritance Hidden Under My Name

I read the beneficiary agreement four times.

My name appeared at the top.

My father's name appeared beneath it.

And at the bottom was a signature that looked almost identical to mine.

Almost.

"Richard, I never signed this.""

The retired attorney removed his glasses.

"I know.""

I looked at him.

"Then why does it have my signature?""

"Because your father arranged for the document to be executed through a legal representative when you were nineteen.""

"Who?""

Richard hesitated.

"Your mother.""

I turned toward Eleanor.

She was sitting across the table, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

"Mom?""

She nodded.

"Your father asked me to sign certain documents on your behalf.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because he made me promise.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, a delivery truck was unloading boxes.

People were crossing the street, checking their phones, carrying coffee.

Ordinary life continued while mine was being rewritten.

"How much money is in this account?""

Richard opened his briefcase.

"The original amount was eight million, four hundred thousand dollars. After years of protected investments and distributions, the current estimated value is approximately eleven million, seven hundred thousand.""

I turned around.

"Eleven million?""

He nodded.

"Your father established the account to protect the recovered assets from Daniel Mercer.""

I stared at him.

"Why would my father put that money in my name?""

Richard placed another document on the table.

"Because Daniel couldn't legally access an account held for a minor beneficiary without satisfying certain conditions. Your father wanted the money protected until you were old enough to make independent decisions.""

"But I never knew.""

"That was intentional.""

I looked at Mom.

She was crying again.

"Your father didn't want you growing up thinking about money," she said.

"He wanted you to have a normal life.""

I almost laughed.

"Well, that worked out beautifully.""

She reached for my hand.

"Marcus, I'm sorry.""

I pulled my hand back.

Not because I didn't love her.

Because I was beginning to understand how many people had made decisions about my life without asking me.

My father.

My mother.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

And now, somehow, my entire marriage was tangled in an inheritance I hadn't known existed.

"Why was Vanessa involved?"" I asked.

Richard answered.

"She learned about the account through Daniel. He apparently believed that if you were persuaded to sign a transfer agreement, the assets could be moved into a new management structure.""

"Why would I sign something like that?""

Richard looked at me.

"Because the agreement also contains a provision allowing a spouse to receive certain administrative authority with the beneficiary's consent.""

I felt cold.

"Vanessa.""

He nodded.

"She was listed as the proposed secondary administrator.""

I closed my eyes.

My wife hadn't simply wanted access to my mother's foundation.

She had been positioning herself to control an inheritance worth nearly twelve million dollars.

"Did she know about the amount?""

"Based on the correspondence we've seen, yes.""

I picked up my phone.

I wanted to call her.

I wanted to hear her explain how she could sit beside me at dinner, kiss me goodnight, and secretly plan to take control of money my father had protected for decades.

But Richard stopped me.

"Don't contact her yet.""

"Why?""

"Because I suspect she hasn't told Daniel everything.""

Olivia leaned forward.

"What do you mean?""

Richard opened another folder.

"I reviewed the preliminary correspondence Vanessa sent to the bank. She claimed Eleanor was medically incapable of managing the foundation. But the beneficiary agreement doesn't require Eleanor's approval.""

I frowned.

"Then why forge her signature?""

"Because the foundation's records and your father's protected account are connected through a separate settlement agreement. If Daniel could undermine Eleanor's authority, he could challenge the original arrangement.""

I looked at the ledger.

"So he wanted to discredit Mom first.""

"Exactly.""

Olivia folded her arms.

"Then why did Vanessa tell me Eleanor had agreed to release my inheritance?""

Richard looked at her.

"Because your inheritance and Marcus's account are separate legal matters. Daniel may have been trying to create pressure from both directions.""

Olivia shook her head.

"He was going to use me.""

"Yes," Richard replied.

"And Vanessa was helping him.""

My phone vibrated.

An email notification appeared.

It was from our family attorney.

*URGENT: REQUEST FOR TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER — BENNETT FAMILY ASSETS.*

I opened it.

The filing requested that all financial accounts connected to Eleanor Bennett and the Bennett family be frozen pending an investigation.

The person who had submitted it was Vanessa.

I looked up.

"She's trying to freeze everything.""

Richard read the message over my shoulder.

"That's not necessarily bad. A freeze could prevent unauthorized transfers.""

"But why would she file it?""

Richard studied the document.

"Because if she can convince a court that there is a dispute over capacity and ownership, she can delay the entire process.""

Olivia looked at me.

"Until Daniel gets the original records.""

I nodded.

Then I noticed something in the filing.

Vanessa had attached a sworn statement.

It claimed that Eleanor had voluntarily appointed her as financial representative six months earlier.

At the bottom was a signature.

My mother's.

And beneath it was the name of a witness.

*Marcus Bennett.*

My stomach dropped.

I had never witnessed that document.

I showed Richard.

He examined it carefully.

"That's serious.""

"Can we prove it's forged?""

"Yes. We'll need handwriting analysis and the original document.""

Mom looked devastated.

"She used your name, too.""

I stared at the paper.

Then I remembered something.

Six months earlier, Vanessa had asked me to sign several household documents while I was rushing out for work.

She had told me they were insurance renewals.

I had signed without reading every page.

"Richard, can you check whether my signature appears on anything else?""

He nodded.

"I'll request the complete filing history.""

I leaned back.

The more I discovered, the more I realized Vanessa hadn't suddenly become this person.

She had been building a plan for months.

Possibly years.

And I had been too busy working to notice.

That evening, I returned home alone.

Vanessa's car was in the driveway.

I entered quietly.

She was sitting at the kitchen island, eating takeout.

A glass of wine stood beside her.

She looked up.

"Where have you been?""

"With Richard.""

Her fork stopped.

"Did he tell you anything?""

"Eleven million, seven hundred thousand dollars.""

Her face went completely still.

I placed the beneficiary agreement on the counter.

"That's how much my father left me.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Marcus, we need to talk.""

"We've been talking for eleven years.""

"Don't do this.""

"Did you know about the account?""

She looked down.

"Daniel told me.""

"When?""

"Two years ago.""

Two years.

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I didn't want you to become obsessed with something you didn't understand.""

I laughed.

"Interesting. You understood it well enough to put your name on the administration documents.""

She stood.

"That was supposed to protect us!""

"Us?""

"Yes, us! We're married!""

I looked directly at her.

"Then why did you offer Daniel control?""

Her expression changed.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

"Because he promised me the money would never become a problem between us.""

I shook my head.

"Eleven million dollars isn't a marriage counselor, Vanessa.""

She began crying.

But before I could respond, she said something that stopped me.

"Marcus, there's one thing Richard hasn't told you.""

"What?""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Your father didn't put that money in your name because he trusted you.""

I frowned.

"Then why?""

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

"Because he knew one day Daniel would try to destroy the Bennett family from the inside.""

May you like

She stepped closer.

"And he believed someone in our family would eventually help him.""
