Chapter 2: The Photograph on Claire's Phone

The photograph showed my wife standing beside a woman in a cream-colored dress.

Behind them was a large banner bearing the words:

*THE CHARLOTTE WOMEN'S LEGACY FOUNDATION — PRIVATE DONOR RECEPTION.*

Vanessa was smiling at the camera.

My mother was standing several feet behind her.

But that wasn't what caught my attention.

It was the handwritten sign Vanessa was holding.

Eleanor Bennett — Household Assistant.

I stared at it.

"What is this?""

Claire swallowed.

"I took this picture three weeks ago at a charity fundraiser.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"Claire, put your phone away.""

Claire ignored her.

"Vanessa invited several of us to the event. She told everyone that her husband had hired an elderly woman to help around the house because his mother was no longer capable of living independently.""

I slowly turned toward my wife.

"Why would you tell people that?""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"Because you never explain anything properly, Marcus. People ask questions. I have to answer them.""

"Answer what questions?""

"About your mother living with us!""

Claire shook her head.

"That's not what you told us.""

Vanessa glared at her.

"Stay out of this.""

But Claire was already committed.

She pulled another photograph from her phone.

This one showed Vanessa standing beside a table covered with donation envelopes.

My mother was visible in the background, carrying a tray.

"She told us Eleanor was a paid household assistant who had recently moved into the guest suite because she needed somewhere affordable to stay.""

My hands curled into fists.

"Mom?""

My mother lowered her eyes.

"I didn't want trouble, Marcus.""

"Did Vanessa tell you to wear that apron tonight?""

Mom didn't answer.

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Answer me.""

Vanessa threw her hands up.

"Oh, for heaven's sake! It was just a way to explain why she was here. I didn't want people asking uncomfortable questions.""

"She's my mother.""

"And she's living in our house!""

"Because I invited her!""

"Exactly!"" Vanessa shouted.

"You invited her without thinking about how it would affect me!""

Claire stood.

"Vanessa, you told us something else, too.""

My wife froze.

I noticed it immediately.

"What else?""

Claire looked uncomfortable.

"She said Eleanor was being paid from a household allowance.""

I frowned.

"Paid?""

Vanessa interrupted.

"That's not important.""

Claire continued.

"She said your mother received a monthly payment for helping with cooking, cleaning, and general household duties. She even complained that Eleanor was getting too old to be useful.""

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

I looked at Mom.

"Have you been getting paid?""

She shook her head.

"No, sweetheart.""

"Not once?""

"No.""

I turned back to Vanessa.

"Where did that story come from?""

Vanessa took a long drink of wine.

"I don't remember exactly what I said.""

"Six hundred dollars. I gave you six hundred dollars to hire someone tonight.""

"And I was going to!""

"Then why is my mother washing dishes?""

"Because she insisted!""

Mom stepped forward.

"Marcus, please. I don't want anyone fighting.""

I took her gently by the shoulders.

"Mom, you haven't done anything wrong.""

She looked at me with tired eyes.

"I know, sweetheart. But I don't want you losing your marriage over me.""

Those words nearly broke me.

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"Can we please stop acting like I've committed a crime? It's a dinner party.""

Claire shook her head.

"No. It's not just a dinner party.""

She opened her handbag again and removed a folded invitation.

"Vanessa, you asked me to help with something at the fundraiser. Remember?""

My wife said nothing.

Claire placed the invitation on the coffee table.

It was for an upcoming private gathering hosted by the Charlotte Women's Legacy Foundation.

"She wanted me to introduce her to several people who were interested in funding a new community project," Claire explained.

I rubbed my forehead.

"What does that have to do with my mother?""

Claire looked at me.

"Everything.""

She tapped the photograph on her phone.

"Your mother isn't some random elderly woman who happens to live in your house.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

Claire took a breath.

"Do you know the Bennett Community Trust?""

I nodded slowly.

I'd heard of it. It was a charitable organization that funded scholarships, housing assistance, and senior care programs across North Carolina.

My father had mentioned it years ago.

"Of course," I said.

"Why?""

Claire looked at Eleanor.

"Because Eleanor Bennett founded it.""

The room went completely still.

I turned toward my mother.

"What?""

Mom closed her eyes.

"Claire, please.""

But Claire continued.

"Twenty-seven years ago, Eleanor sold the family manufacturing business and used almost all of the proceeds to establish that foundation. She has quietly funded scholarships for hundreds of students.""

I stared at my mother.

She had never told me any of this.

I knew she had inherited a small business from my grandfather, but I had always believed she sold it for enough money to pay off her mortgage and retire comfortably.

"Mom, is that true?""

She nodded faintly.

"It was a long time ago.""

Claire shook her head.

"It isn't just history. The foundation still operates. Your mother is its chairwoman.""

Vanessa suddenly went pale.

I turned toward her.

"Did you know this?""

She looked away.

That was when Claire said something that made my blood run cold.

"Vanessa didn't just tell us Eleanor was hired help. She told us she had power of attorney over her.""

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

"What?""

Claire looked directly at my wife.

"She said Eleanor was beginning to forget things and that she was helping manage her finances.""

My mother gripped the doorway.

"Marcus...""

I turned.

"Mom, what is she talking about?""

My mother looked at Vanessa.

For the first time that evening, I saw fear in her eyes.

"Your wife asked me to sign some papers," she whispered.

Vanessa rushed toward her.

"That's enough, Eleanor!""

I stepped between them.

"What papers?""

Mom's voice trembled.

"She said they were just for emergencies.""

Claire slowly sat back down.

May you like

Then she delivered the sentence that changed everything.

"Marcus, if Eleanor signed what Vanessa showed me at the fundraiser, your wife may have been preparing to take control of the entire foundation.""
