Chapter 6: The Daughter Nobody Was Allowed to Mention
Vanessa didn't sit down.
She stood beside the kitchen island, staring at the email as though the words might disappear if she looked away long enough.
Mom remained silent.
I waited.
"Who is Olivia?"" I asked.
Vanessa finally pulled out a chair.
"She's Daniel's daughter.""
"I know that much.""
"She was born before Daniel married his current wife.""
"Why is she connected to my father?""
Vanessa rubbed her temples.
"Because your father had a relationship with Daniel's first wife.""
The kitchen seemed to tilt.
I looked at Mom.
She was staring at her hands.
"Is that true?""
Mom nodded.
"Your father made a mistake. A terrible one.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"How long?""
"Several months," Mom whispered.
"Before you were born.""
I looked back at Vanessa.
"And Olivia?""
"She's your father's daughter.""
I gripped the edge of the counter.
"So I have a sister?""
Vanessa nodded.
The word felt foreign.
Sister.
I had grown up believing I was my father's only child.
I had spent years looking at old family photographs, hearing stories about his childhood, and wondering what parts of him I had inherited.
Now I was being told there was another child.
A daughter.
One whose existence had been hidden for decades.
"Does she know?""
Vanessa looked away.
"Yes.""
"Does she know about me?""
"Yes.""
I stared at her.
"How long have you known?""
She didn't answer.
"Vanessa!""
"Three years.""
Three years.
She had known about my sister for three years.
We had celebrated birthdays together, hosted Christmas dinners, taken vacations, and sat beside each other at family gatherings.
All that time, she had been carrying a secret about my father.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because it wasn't my secret to tell.""
I laughed without humor.
"But it was your secret to use?""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"I didn't use anyone.""
I placed the email in front of her.
"Then explain the transfer.""
She took a long breath.
"Daniel contacted me because he knew I was married to you. He said there were old financial matters involving your father's estate that needed to be resolved.""
"And you believed him?""
"I believed he had a legitimate claim.""
"An eight-million-dollar claim?""
"Not all of it.""
Mom finally spoke.
"Vanessa, tell him the truth.""
My wife turned sharply.
"You have no right to judge me.""
Mom's expression remained calm.
"I gave you a place in this family. I trusted you with my home. I let you help me organize documents because you told me you cared.""
"I do care!""
"Then why did you tell your friends I was your employee?""
Vanessa looked away.
Mom continued.
"Why did you ask me to sign papers I couldn't understand? And why did you tell people I was losing my memory?""
Vanessa slammed her palm against the table.
"Because nobody listens to me in this house!""
I stared at her.
"What does that have to do with stealing my mother's authority?""
"I'm not stealing anything!""
"Then what are you doing?""
She looked at me.
For a moment, her expression softened.
"Marcus, Daniel promised me something.""
"What?""
"That if the restructuring went through, he would give me a share of the recovered funds.""
I felt my stomach drop.
"How much?""
She swallowed.
"One million dollars.""
Mom closed her eyes.
I stared at my wife.
"You were going to help him take control of my mother's foundation for a million dollars?""
"It wasn't like that.""
"Then what was it like?""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"I have spent eleven years being invisible in this marriage!""
I blinked.
"Invisible?""
"Everything is about your mother! Her comfort. Her health. Her needs.
Her foundation. Her history. Even when we go on vacation, you call her every day!""
"She's my mother.""
"And I'm your wife!""
"That doesn't give you the right to exploit her.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"I never forced her to do anything!""
I pointed toward the kitchen sink.
"She was washing your friends' dishes because you told them she was hired help!""
Vanessa's face reddened.
"That was one stupid comment!""
"No. It was a choice.""
She grabbed her handbag.
"I'm going to my sister's.""
"Fine.""
She stopped.
I think she expected me to ask her to stay.
Instead, I picked up the email and placed it inside the folder.
"Don't touch another document belonging to my mother.""
Vanessa stared at me.
"You can't throw me out of my own home.""
"I'm not throwing you out. But you're not going near her financial records again.""
She walked toward the door.
Then turned around.
"You think your mother is some innocent woman? Ask her what happened to Daniel's daughter.""
I frowned.
"What are you talking about?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Ask her why Olivia grew up believing Eleanor stole her inheritance.""
Mom stood slowly.
"Vanessa, stop.""
But my wife was already speaking.
"Ask her why Daniel has spent twenty-seven years trying to recover money he believes belongs to his daughter!""
The front door slammed.
For several seconds, the only sound in the kitchen was the ticking clock.
I turned toward Mom.
"Is that true?""
She looked devastated.
"Not the way Vanessa described it.""
"Then tell me what happened.""
Mom sat down.
Her hands trembled as she opened the envelope again.
"After your father died, Daniel's wife contacted me. She told me Olivia needed financial support. She was only a little girl.""
I pulled out the chair opposite her.
"What did you do?""
"I helped her.""
"How?""
"I paid for Olivia's education through an independent trust. I made sure she had medical coverage. I even arranged for her to receive money every month.""
I frowned.
"Then why does Daniel think you stole her inheritance?""
"Because the original recovery agreement named Olivia as a partial beneficiary. But the money was never supposed to go directly to Daniel. It was supposed to be protected until she reached adulthood.""
"Did she receive it?""
Mom nodded.
"Some of it. But the rest was held in a separate account because of the legal dispute.""
"How much remains?""
Mom looked at me.
"Two million, one hundred thousand dollars.""
I sat back.
"And Daniel wants it?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he believes he should control it until Olivia agrees to transfer it to him.""
I stared at her.
"Can he do that?""
"No. Richard told me years ago that he had no legal authority over her inheritance.""
I picked up my phone.
"We need to contact Olivia.""
Mom hesitated.
"Marcus, she may not want to speak with you.""
"Why?""
"Because she believes I stole from her.""
I looked at the old photograph on the table.
My father.
Daniel.
The attorney.
And somewhere out there, a woman who might be my sister.
I had no idea what she looked like.
I didn't know her birthday.
I didn't know whether she had children or whether she had spent her life wondering about the family she had never known.
But I knew one thing.
I wasn't going to let Daniel use her as another weapon against my mother.
I called Richard again.
"I need Olivia's contact information.""
Richard hesitated.
"I can arrange a meeting, but you need to understand something.""
"What?""
"Olivia has already contacted the foundation's attorney.""
"Why?""
"Because yesterday, someone sent her a document claiming Eleanor had agreed to release her entire inheritance.""
I looked at Mom.
Her face drained of color.
"Who sent it?""
Richard paused.
Then answered.
"Vanessa Bennett.""
Before I could respond, another notification appeared on my phone.
An email from an unfamiliar address.
The subject line read:
*TO MARCUS BENNETT — FROM OLIVIA MERCER.*
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
I know what your mother did to my father, and if you want the truth, meet me tomorrow without Eleanor.
Then a second line appeared beneath it.
Bring the original photograph of your father.
I looked at the old picture lying on the kitchen table.
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered whether my mother had been protecting me from Daniel Mercer...
Or protecting me from the truth about my own father.
