Chapter 11: My Wife's Secret Appointment
I didn't answer Vanessa.
I simply stared at her.
"Who did my father think would help Daniel?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
"Marcus, I'm trying to tell you something important!""
"Then stop speaking in riddles.""
She walked toward the kitchen window.
For a moment, I thought she was going to leave.
Instead, she turned around.
"Daniel showed me a letter from your father. It said that the money would remain protected until you reached forty-five. But there was another condition.""
"What condition?""
"Your marriage had to remain intact.""
I frowned.
"That makes no sense.""
"Daniel said your father believed that a stable marriage would protect you from people who wanted to manipulate you.""
I stared at her.
"So?""
"So Daniel told me that if we divorced before the transfer was completed, the money could become subject to a legal dispute.""
I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.
"You're telling me you stayed married to me for the inheritance?""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"No!""
"Then explain why you were discussing divorce conditions with Daniel.""
She looked away.
That was enough.
I stepped back.
"How long have you been planning this?""
"Marcus...""
"How long?""
She whispered, "Since last summer.""
I nodded slowly.
"Thank you.""
She looked confused.
"For what?""
"For finally telling me the truth.""
I walked toward the stairs.
"Where are you going?"" she asked.
"To pack some things.""
Her expression changed immediately.
"You can't leave.""
"Watch me.""
"Marcus, wait!""
She followed me upstairs.
"You're overreacting. We can work this out.""
I entered the bedroom and opened the closet.
She stood behind me.
"Daniel told me the money would secure our future. He said we could finally stop worrying about everything.""
I turned.
"We don't worry about money, Vanessa. I've worked twelve-hour days for years so we wouldn't have to.""
"That's not the same.""
"You're right. It isn't. Because I never needed eleven million dollars to be happy.""
She crossed her arms.
"Easy for you to say. You already had everything.""
I stared at her.
"I had a mother who sacrificed her life for me. I had a wife I trusted. I had a home I believed was safe.""
My voice cracked.
"Now I don't know what I have.""
Vanessa's expression softened.
"Marcus, I love you.""
I looked at her for a long moment.
Then I asked:
"Did you love me when you told your friends my mother was hired help?""
She didn't answer.
"Did you love me when you forged her signature?""
"That's not what happened.""
"Did you love me when you tried to take control of my inheritance?""
She started crying.
I packed a few shirts and placed them inside a suitcase.
Then I heard a notification from her phone.
She glanced down.
Her face changed.
"Who is it?"" I asked.
"No one.""
She turned the screen away.
I held out my hand.
"Let me see.""
"Marcus, please.""
"Show me.""
She hesitated.
Then she handed me the phone.
The message was from Daniel.
*The bank review is moving faster than expected. We need your signature tomorrow. Do not tell Marcus about the meeting.*
Below it was a calendar invitation.
*PRIVATE BENEFICIARY MEETING — 10:00 A.M. — MERCER STRATEGIC HOLDINGS.*
The guest list contained three names.
Daniel Mercer.
Vanessa Bennett.
And someone named *Eleanor Bennett*.
I looked up.
"Why is my mother invited?""
Vanessa snatched the phone.
"I don't know!""
"Your name is on the invitation.""
"I didn't arrange it!""
"Then cancel it.""
She stared at me.
I took my suitcase and walked downstairs.
Before leaving, I called Mom.
"Are you home?""
"Yes, sweetheart.""
"Stay there. Don't open the door to anyone you don't recognize.""
She sounded confused.
"Why?""
"Daniel has scheduled a meeting in your name.""
There was a pause.
Then she said:
"Marcus, I think I know what he's planning.""
I stopped walking.
"What?""
"He's trying to use the original family settlement agreement.""
"Richard said the agreement protected the money.""
"It did. But there was a second copy.""
My stomach tightened.
"Where?""
Mom took a breath.
"Your father gave it to someone he trusted.""
"Who?""
She whispered:
"Your aunt Patricia.""
I froze.
My father's younger sister had died twelve years earlier.
"Mom, Patricia is gone.""
"I know.""
"Then how could she have the agreement?""
"Because she left instructions with her attorney.""
I gripped the phone.
"Do you know who that attorney is?""
Mom hesitated.
"Yes. His name is Jonathan Pierce.""
I recognized it immediately.
Jonathan was the attorney who had represented Vanessa and me during our marriage.
He had also handled several property transactions for us.
I felt sick.
"Mom, are you sure?""
"Your father told me Patricia had placed the documents in a private trust. He said nobody could access them without a specific authorization.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was standing at the top of the stairs, watching me.
"Who has the authorization?""
Mom's voice dropped.
"Your wife.""
I stared at Vanessa.
She slowly stepped backward.
I lowered the phone.
"Why does Vanessa have access to my aunt's private trust?""
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
I stepped toward her.
"Answer me.""
She finally whispered:
"Because Jonathan said it was part of our estate planning.""
"Why?""
"Because you signed the authorization.""
I shook my head.
"I never authorized you to access Patricia's trust.""
Vanessa looked desperate.
"You signed the paperwork when we bought the house!""
I remembered the stack of documents.
The closing papers.
The insurance forms.
The estate planning package.
And suddenly, I understood why Richard had been so concerned about my signature.
I had signed documents I hadn't fully read.
I had trusted my wife to handle everything.
And she had used that trust to build a legal path into my family's private records.
I picked up my suitcase.
"I'm going to Jonathan's office tomorrow.""
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
"Don't.""
I looked at her hand.
She released me.
"Marcus, if you go there, everything changes.""
I looked directly into her eyes.
"Everything already changed.""
I walked out.
At 8:30 the following morning, Jonathan Pierce called me.
"Marcus, I received your message.""
"Good. I need to see Patricia's trust documents.""
He sighed.
"That's going to be difficult.""
"Why?""
"Because your wife has already requested access.""
I gripped the steering wheel.
"Did you give it to her?""
"No.""
"Why not?""
"Because there is a clause in the trust that requires the original beneficiary to be present.""
"That's me?""
"Yes.""
I exhaled.
"Then I'll come in.""
Jonathan paused.
"Marcus, there's something you should know before you arrive.""
"What?""
"Your aunt didn't leave the documents to you alone.""
I frowned.
"Who else?""
He lowered his voice.
"Vanessa.""
I stopped the car.
"What?""
"Patricia named both of you as joint custodians of the family records. But she added a condition.""
"What condition?""
"Neither custodian can access the sealed documents without the other's consent.""
I stared through the windshield.
My wife had been given access to my family's secrets years before I knew those secrets existed.
And now she was trying to get me into the same room as her.
"Jonathan, what happens if I refuse?""
"Then the documents remain sealed.""
I thought about the ledger.
The forged signatures.
The eleven million dollars.
The missing evidence.
Then I asked:
"What exactly is inside that trust?""
Jonathan was quiet for a long moment.
Finally, he said:
"A videotape recorded by your father three days before he died.""
My hands tightened around the steering wheel.
"What does it show?""
Jonathan answered carefully.
"Your father explaining who really stole the money.""
I swallowed.
"Who?""
"I can't tell you.""
"Why not?""
"Because I haven't watched the tape.""
He paused.
"But Patricia left a note with it.""
"What note?""
Jonathan read the words aloud.
The person who destroyed this family will return wearing the face of someone Marcus loves.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Then Jonathan added:
"And Marcus, the trust was updated three months ago.""
May you like
"By whom?""
"Vanessa.""
