Chapter 7: The Woman Who Hated My Mother

At 9:15 the following morning, I stood outside a coffee shop in downtown Charlotte, holding an old photograph of my father.

I had barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Vanessa's voice.

Ask her what happened to Daniel's daughter.

And then I heard the words from Olivia's email.

I know what your mother did to my father.

I had spent forty-six years believing my family history was relatively simple.

My father died.

My mother raised me.

We survived.

Now I was discovering that nearly every important detail of my childhood had been built around a secret.

I checked my phone.

A message from Mom appeared.

*Please be careful, sweetheart. I don't want you getting hurt because of something that happened before you were born.*

I typed a reply.

*I'm going to listen. That's all.*

Then I put the phone away.

A black SUV pulled into the parking lot.

A woman stepped out.

She looked to be in her early forties, with shoulder-length dark hair, a tailored gray coat, and a leather handbag hanging from her shoulder.

She scanned the tables through the window.

When her eyes found me, she stopped.

I recognized something immediately.

My father's eyes.

She walked inside.

"Marcus Bennett?""

I stood.

"Olivia?""

She nodded.

We shook hands awkwardly.

Her grip was firm.

She didn't smile.

"You're taller than I expected.""

I almost laughed.

"I've never met you before.""

"Neither have I.""

She sat opposite me and placed her handbag on the chair beside her.

A waitress approached.

"Can I get you anything?""

"Black coffee," Olivia said.

I ordered the same.

When the waitress left, Olivia looked at the photograph in my hand.

"You brought it.""

I placed it on the table.

She picked it up carefully.

For several seconds, she simply stared at my father.

"That's him," she whispered.

"Your father?""

She nodded.

Then she pointed toward the man standing beside him.

"And that's Daniel.""

I watched her expression.

"Do you have a relationship with him?""

Olivia laughed bitterly.

"That's a generous way of describing it.""

She put the photograph down.

"He wasn't around when I was growing up. My mother raised me. She worked nights at a hospital and cleaned offices on weekends. Daniel sent money occasionally, but he never attended school events or birthdays.""

I listened.

"Why?""

"Because he was busy protecting his business interests. At least, that's what my mother used to say.""

She took a sip of water.

"After she died, I discovered a folder of old legal documents. That's when I learned about your father.""

"What did you discover?""

"That my father believed your family had stolen money from him.""

I leaned forward.

"Daniel stole money from my father's company.""

"That's what Eleanor told the lawyers.""

"And you don't believe her?""

Olivia's eyes hardened.

"I believe my mother spent years telling me that your mother took something that belonged to me.""

I didn't argue.

Instead, I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Why did you agree to meet me?""

She opened her handbag and removed a thick envelope.

"Because I received this yesterday.""

She slid a photocopy across the table.

It was a proposed beneficiary release.

My mother's name appeared at the bottom.

But the signature looked wrong.

I studied it.

"That's the same document Vanessa showed Mom.""

Olivia nodded.

"Your wife sent it to me. She said Eleanor had finally agreed to release the remaining inheritance.""

"She didn't.""

"I know that now.""

I looked at her.

"How?""

Olivia pulled out another sheet.

An email.

From Vanessa.

The subject line read:

*A FRESH START FOR THE MERCER FAMILY.*

The message was short.

Vanessa had written that Eleanor was becoming increasingly confused and that Marcus was unwilling to acknowledge the financial claims involving Olivia.

She suggested Olivia cooperate with Daniel.

In exchange, Daniel would help her obtain the remaining inheritance and secure an additional payment.

I read the email twice.

"She was trying to turn you against my mother.""

Olivia nodded.

"She told me Eleanor had manipulated the accounts for years. She even suggested your mother might have used some of my money to fund her charity work.""

I felt sick.

"That's not true.""

"That's why I came.""

She opened the envelope again.

Inside was an old bank statement.

The account number matched the one Mom had mentioned.

The first entry was dated twenty-six years earlier.

There were monthly deposits.

Consistent.

Documented.

And the beneficiary field contained Olivia's full name.

"Your mother sent money to my account for almost twenty years," Olivia said quietly.

I stared at the figures.

"Did you know?""

"No. I thought it came from an anonymous education trust.""

"Then why did you believe she stole from you?""

Olivia looked down.

"Because Daniel told me the money was supposed to be much larger. He said Eleanor had taken control of everything after your father's death and kept the majority for herself.""

I sat back.

"Did he ever show you evidence?""

"No.""

"Did you ask?""

"Several times.""

She pulled out her phone and opened a voice recording.

"I recorded this conversation last month.""

She pressed play.

Daniel's voice filled the small space between us.

"Olivia, you need to understand that Eleanor Bennett has spent decades controlling that money. Your father trusted her, and she betrayed him.""

Olivia's recorded voice asked, "Then why won't you show me the original agreement?""

Daniel answered:

"Because those documents are complicated. You don't need to involve yourself in legal matters.""

The recording continued.

Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.

"Once Vanessa gets the old woman to sign, everything will be much easier.""

Olivia stopped the recording.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked:

"Why didn't you send this to a lawyer?""

"I did. Yesterday.""

"Good.""

She studied my face.

"Do you believe me?""

"I believe the recording.""

She nodded slowly.

Then she looked at the photograph again.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Your father wrote me a letter.""

I froze.

"How?""

"My mother kept it. It was found inside a box after she died.""

She pulled out a folded sheet of yellowed paper.

The handwriting matched the signature on the photograph's back.

I recognized it immediately.

My father's handwriting.

Olivia pushed the letter toward me.

"I haven't shown this to Daniel. I haven't shown it to anyone.""

I unfolded it.

The first line read:

To my daughter, if you ever get the chance to know me...

My vision blurred.

I kept reading.

My father apologized for not being there.

He explained that he had tried to arrange a future for Olivia, but that things had become dangerous after he discovered Daniel's financial activities.

Near the bottom, one sentence had been underlined twice.

If Eleanor ever tells you the truth about the missing money, believe her. She is the only person who knows where the original evidence is hidden.

I looked up.

"Do you know what he meant?""

Olivia shook her head.

"No.""

I folded the letter carefully.

Then my phone rang.

It was Richard Cole.

"Marcus, where are you?""

"With Olivia.""

"Listen to me. I just received a notice from the foundation's bank. Someone has submitted a request to change the authorized signatories.""

My heart began pounding.

"Who submitted it?""

Richard's answer came immediately.

"Vanessa.""

I looked at Olivia.

She was already standing.

"How long do we have?"" I asked.

"Until the bank's review is completed. But there's something worse.""

"What?""

Richard lowered his voice.

"The original evidence your father mentioned has disappeared from the foundation's archive.""

I stared at the letter.

Someone had been searching for it.

And I suddenly understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to get into my mother's office.

May you like

Because whatever my father had hidden...

It was the one thing that could destroy Daniel Mercer.
