Chapter 18: The Man Behind the Locked Door
Detective Grant immediately contacted the officers stationed near Jonathan's office.
Richard called the law firm.
I stood beside the courthouse entrance, listening to the phone ring without answer.
"He's not picking up," Richard said.
"Then we go there.""
Detective Grant shook her head.
"We wait for confirmation from the officers.""
I looked at her.
"Daniel is inside with him.""
"And we don't know whether they're armed or whether anyone else is there.""
I hated every second of waiting.
Then her radio crackled.
"Units approaching the office report the front entrance is locked. No response from inside.""
Detective Grant grabbed her keys.
"We're moving.""
Jonathan's office occupied the third floor of a brick building in uptown Charlotte.
When we arrived, two officers were already outside.
The receptionist was standing near the elevator, visibly shaken.
"Mr. Pierce hasn't come out," she told Detective Grant.
"I heard shouting about twenty minutes ago.""
"What kind of shouting?""
"Someone said the word ledger. Then something crashed.""
Detective Grant instructed the officers to secure the hallway.
One knocked.
"Police. Open the door.""
No answer.
They knocked again.
Still nothing.
A locksmith was called.
I paced the hallway.
Richard stood beside me, clutching the original authorization.
Rachel had remained at the courthouse with Thomas, who was now cooperating under police supervision.
Vanessa was waiting downstairs.
I hadn't spoken to her since the previous night.
When the locksmith arrived, it took him less than a minute to open the door.
The office was dark.
A desk lamp lay shattered on the floor.
Papers were scattered across the carpet.
Jonathan sat behind his desk, his hands resting on the surface.
Daniel stood beside the window.
He turned slowly.
"Marcus.""
Detective Grant raised her weapon.
"Step away from the desk. Hands where I can see them.""
Daniel smiled.
"Detective, this is a private conversation.""
"Step away.""
He lifted both hands.
Jonathan looked at me.
His face was bruised.
There was blood near his temple.
"Marcus, I'm sorry.""
I stepped toward him.
"What happened?""
Daniel answered.
"We were discussing a business matter.""
Jonathan shook his head.
"He wanted the original authorization.""
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"Jonathan, be careful.""
Detective Grant ordered Daniel to turn around.
An officer approached and secured his hands.
Daniel didn't resist.
As they searched him, another officer found a small flash drive in his coat pocket.
Jonathan looked at it.
"That's the copy of Patricia's statement.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Where did you get that?""
Daniel shrugged.
"Jonathan gave it to me.""
Jonathan's face tightened.
"That's a lie.""
Daniel laughed.
"Then perhaps you should explain why you kept it hidden for twelve years.""
I looked at Jonathan.
"Did you have Patricia's final statement?""
He lowered his eyes.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell us?""
"Because it implicated Daniel. But it also implicated someone else.""
"Who?""
Jonathan looked at Richard.
Then he looked at me.
"Your mother.""
I felt my stomach drop.
Richard immediately objected.
"That's not possible. Eleanor was the one who helped recover the money.""
Jonathan opened a drawer and removed a sealed document.
"Patricia's statement says Eleanor signed an authorization after your father's death.""
I looked toward the door.
Mom had just arrived.
She stood frozen in the hallway.
"Mom?""
Her face crumpled.
"I can explain.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"What did you sign?""
Eleanor looked at Jonathan.
Then at Daniel.
Finally, she looked at me.
"Your father had asked me to protect the company. After he died, Daniel came to me with documents saying the business would collapse unless I approved emergency transfers.""
"Did you approve them?""
"Yes.""
"How much?""
She shook her head.
"I don't remember the exact amount.""
Richard stepped closer.
"Eleanor, did you authorize money to be moved into Mercer Strategic Holdings?""
"No.""
Jonathan placed the document on the desk.
"According to Patricia's statement, the authorization was later altered.""
Mom stared at the paper.
"That's not my signature.""
Jonathan examined it.
"Patricia said the original was signed by Eleanor. The version Daniel circulated had additional language.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was watching us.
"Did you alter it?""
He smiled faintly.
"You're all making assumptions.""
Detective Grant stepped closer.
"Mr. Mercer, you need to stop talking.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Your mother signed the document, Marcus. She just doesn't like what it says now.""
Mom shook her head.
"I signed an emergency authorization to preserve the factory. I never agreed to transfer the recovered funds to Daniel.""
Jonathan nodded.
"That's consistent with Patricia's statement.""
I turned toward him.
"Then why did you tell us my mother was implicated?""
"Because the altered document carried her signature. Daniel intended to use it to make the transfer appear legitimate.""
Richard opened the ledger.
"Which means the second ledger and this statement establish that the authorization was changed after Eleanor signed it.""
Jonathan nodded.
"Yes.""
I stared at him.
"And you kept that information hidden?""
He looked ashamed.
"I thought if I disclosed the original statement, my involvement in the earlier transaction would become public.""
"Your involvement?""
Jonathan took a long breath.
"Patricia asked me to witness the document. I later certified a copy without confirming the attached schedules. Daniel used that certification to support the altered authorization.""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Jonathan.""
"I know.""
"You helped him make a false document appear authentic.""
Jonathan nodded.
"I did.""
Daniel suddenly laughed.
"That's the part nobody wants to hear. Everyone in this room made a choice. Your mother signed.
Patricia hid the evidence. Jonathan certified the copy. Thomas moved the money.""
He looked at me.
"And now you want one villain.""
I stepped toward him.
"No. I want the truth.""
Daniel's smile faded.
"You wouldn't recognize it if it were standing in front of you.""
Detective Grant instructed the officers to take him downstairs.
As they escorted him out, he turned toward Mom.
"Eleanor, you should tell Marcus about the envelope.""
Mom went pale.
I looked at her.
"What envelope?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel smiled again.
"The one your father left with you the night before he died.""
My heart began pounding.
"Mom?""
Eleanor reached into her handbag.
Her hands were shaking.
She removed a small, yellowed envelope.
My father's handwriting was on the front.
*For Marcus. Open when he is ready.*
I stared at it.
"Why have you kept that all these years?""
Mom's eyes filled.
"Because your father asked me to wait until you were old enough to understand.""
I took it.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
The first line read:
My son, if you are reading this, then the people I trusted have failed you.
I sat down.
The letter explained that my father had discovered the stolen funds, the forged accounts, and Thomas's involvement.
But the final paragraph was different.
There is one thing I never told your mother. I made a promise to someone before you were born. If that promise is ever revealed, it may change everything you believe about your family.
I turned the page.
There was a second sheet.
It contained a name.
Not Daniel's.
Not Thomas's.
Not Jonathan's.
It was the name of the person my father had promised to protect.
*Patricia Bennett's husband.*
I looked at Richard.
"Who was Patricia married to?""
Richard stared at the page.
Then his face went completely still.
"Your father's older brother.""
I frowned.
"My uncle?""
Richard nodded.
"Edward Bennett.""
I had never met him.
According to my family, Edward had died before I was born.
But the letter contained one more sentence.
Edward did not die in 1989. He left because he knew who was responsible for the theft, and he knew that person would eventually come for my son.
I looked up.
Mom was crying.
"Marcus, there's something I should have told you a long time ago.""
I gripped the letter.
"What?""
She whispered:
"Your uncle Edward is alive.""
Then her phone began ringing.
An unknown number.
She answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Eleanor, it's time.""
Mom turned white.
The man continued.
May you like
"Tell Marcus the truth about his birth certificate.""
And then the call ended.
