Chapter 13: The Ledger Behind Our Fireplace

For several seconds, I couldn't look at Vanessa.

She sat across from me in Jonathan's office, holding the silver key between trembling fingers.

The woman I had shared a bed with for eleven years had just admitted to hiding evidence connected to my father's death, my mother's foundation, and an attempted transfer of millions of dollars.

And somehow, she was still expecting me to protect her.

"What does your name have to do with the ledger?"" I asked.

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"Daniel said my name appeared on several financial transactions.""

"Which transactions?""

"I don't know all the details.""

"Then tell me what you do know.""

She glanced at Jonathan.

He pulled out a chair.

"Vanessa, if you have concealed evidence connected to financial fraud, you need to explain exactly what happened. Don't leave anything out.""

She nodded.

Then she began.

"Three months ago, Daniel contacted me. He said Patricia had left something in the house before she died. He believed it was a ledger containing the original transactions.""

"How did he know about it?""

"He said Patricia had told him.""

I shook my head.

"Why would Patricia tell Daniel where the evidence was hidden?""

"She didn't. He said he found a letter after her death.""

Jonathan leaned forward.

"Did he show you the letter?""

"No.""

"Did you ask?""

Vanessa looked down.

"He said there wasn't time.""

I laughed bitterly.

"So you simply believed him?""

"I was scared!""

Her voice cracked.

"Daniel told me that if the ledger became public, my name would be connected to the theft. He said I could lose everything.""

I stared at her.

"You were involved in the transactions?""

"No. Not when the money was originally stolen. I wasn't even born.""

"Then why would your name appear?""

She hesitated.

"Because Daniel used me.""

Jonathan's expression hardened.

"Explain.""

Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.

"This is the first document he asked me to sign.""

Jonathan examined it.

His eyebrows drew together.

It was an authorization allowing Mercer Strategic Holdings to conduct a historical financial review of the Bennett family's assets.

But beneath the main agreement was a separate clause.

The signer acknowledged responsibility for certain administrative transfers.

Jonathan looked up.

"Vanessa, do you understand what this says?""

She nodded.

"I do now.""

"You accepted responsibility for transactions made through your personal accounts.""

I turned toward her.

"What personal accounts?""

She closed her eyes.

"Daniel opened a business account under my name two years ago.""

My jaw tightened.

"Why?""

"He said it was for consulting payments. He told me it would be easier to manage the foundation's administrative expenses.""

"Did money pass through it?""

"Yes.""

"How much?""

She whispered, "Almost four hundred thousand dollars.""

I stepped back.

"Four hundred thousand?""

"I never kept it!""

"Where did it go?""

"Daniel controlled the account. He told me it was being used for legal and consulting expenses.""

Jonathan examined the paperwork.

"Did you receive any statements?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Some.""

"Where are they?""

"In the house.""

I looked at her.

"How convenient.""

She began crying again.

"I know what this looks like.""

"It looks like you helped move money through an account in your name while planning to take control of my family's assets.""

"I didn't know what he was doing!""

"Then why hide the ledger?""

She stared at me.

"Because Daniel told me what was inside it.""

I waited.

"He said your mother had signed an agreement authorizing the original transfers. He said the ledger would make it look as if she had stolen money from Olivia's inheritance.""

Jonathan interrupted.

"Did he tell you that the second ledger contained evidence against your mother?""

"Yes.""

"And you believed him?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not completely.""

She looked directly at me.

"I found the ledger. I read some of it. That's when I realized Daniel was lying.""

I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.

"What did you find?""

She swallowed.

"Your mother didn't steal the money.""

Jonathan went very still.

Vanessa continued.

"She authorized transfers to protect the recovered funds. Daniel had been moving money through shell companies, and your father knew about it.""

"Then who committed the fraud?""

Vanessa reached for the silver key.

"That's what I was trying to figure out.""

Jonathan closed the folder.

"We need to recover that ledger immediately. If Daniel knows Vanessa has it, he may attempt to destroy the evidence.""

I stood.

"Let's go.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"Marcus, I need to tell you something else.""

I didn't move.

"What?""

"Daniel knows about the recording.""

I froze.

"How?""

"He has been monitoring the trust documents. When Jonathan opened the file, Daniel received an alert.""

Jonathan immediately picked up his phone.

"I need to contact the bank and our legal team.""

Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.

"Marcus, please. Listen to me.""

I pulled away.

"You've had three months to tell me the truth.""

"I know.""

"You let my mother wash dishes while you sat with your friends. You lied about her. You tried to get her declared incapable of managing her own affairs.""

Her eyes filled.

"I know.""

"And now you want me to believe you were protecting us?""

She lowered her head.

"No. I want you to understand that I made a terrible mistake.""

I looked at Jonathan.

"We're going to the house.""

The drive back was silent.

Vanessa sat in the passenger seat.

I kept both hands on the steering wheel.

When we arrived, she walked directly toward the fireplace.

It was a large stone structure in the living room, with built-in wooden shelves on either side.

She removed a framed photograph from the mantel.

Behind it was a narrow panel.

She inserted the silver key into a small lock.

The panel clicked.

Inside was a metal compartment.

A thick black ledger lay beneath a stack of envelopes.

I reached for it.

Vanessa stopped me.

"Wait.""

She removed a small flash drive.

"This was taped underneath.""

I stared at it.

"What's on it?""

"I don't know.""

Jonathan, who had followed us with Richard, stepped closer.

"Don't connect it to anything yet. We'll preserve it and have it examined.""

Richard lifted the ledger carefully.

He opened the first page.

His face changed.

"Good Lord.""

"What?""

He turned the book toward me.

There were hundreds of financial entries.

But the last section contained something different.

A list of names.

Daniel Mercer.

Patricia Bennett.

Eleanor Bennett.

Vanessa Bennett.

And one more name.

*Jonathan Pierce.*

I looked at the attorney.

He had gone completely pale.

"Jonathan?""

He stared at the page.

Then he whispered:

"I thought that account had been closed.""

Nobody spoke.

Richard slowly turned the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

The final payment was authorized by the attorney responsible for protecting the trust.

I looked at Jonathan.

"What does that mean?""

He took a step backward.

"Marcus, I can explain.""

But before he could continue, Richard's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his expression changed.

"What's happened?""

A pause.

"Are you certain?""

He lowered the phone.

"The bank has just confirmed an attempted withdrawal from the protected beneficiary account.""

My stomach tightened.

"How much?""

Richard looked at me.

"Two million, one hundred thousand dollars.""

Olivia's inheritance.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the ledger.

Then she whispered:

"Daniel didn't need my signature.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

She looked at Jonathan.

"He already had access.""

Jonathan's face had gone white.

May you like

And then he said something that made Richard close the ledger immediately.

"Because I'm the attorney who has held the original authorization for twenty-seven years.""
