Chapter 8: The Locked Room Beneath the Foundation

I drove Olivia straight to my mother's house.

She sat in the passenger seat, holding her father's letter against her chest.

Neither of us spoke much.

When we arrived, Mom was waiting on the front porch.

She saw Olivia step out of the car.

For a moment, neither woman moved.

Then Mom took one careful step forward.

"Olivia.""

Olivia remained still.

"Eleanor.""

Mom's eyes filled with tears.

"I've wanted to meet you properly for a long time.""

Olivia's expression didn't change.

"Then why didn't you?""

Mom lowered her head.

"Because I was afraid you would hate me.""

Olivia looked away.

"You're a little late.""

I stepped between them.

"Can we go inside? We have something important to discuss.""

Mom nodded.

We gathered in the living room.

I placed my father's letter on the coffee table.

Mom recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

"Where did you get that?""

Olivia answered.

"My mother kept it.""

Mom reached toward the letter but stopped before touching it.

"He wrote to you.""

"He did.""

"Did you read it?""

"Yes.""

Mom sat down slowly.

Then she began crying.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just quiet tears running down the face of a woman who had spent decades pretending she wasn't carrying something unbearably heavy.

Olivia watched her.

"Why didn't you tell me he was trying to contact me?""

Mom looked up.

"Because Daniel threatened to take you away from your mother if I interfered.""

Olivia's expression changed.

"What?""

Mom nodded.

"After your father died, Daniel came to see me. He told me that if I tried to contact you, he would make sure your mother lost custody.""

"Why would he do that?""

"Because he believed you were entitled to part of the recovered money. He wanted control over your inheritance.""

Olivia leaned forward.

"That doesn't make sense. He was my father.""

"Daniel wanted the money more than he wanted to be your father.""

Silence filled the room.

I watched Olivia's fingers tighten around the edge of the letter.

"Did my father really want to know me?""

Mom nodded.

"He did. He wanted to meet you, but he was afraid Daniel would use you to get to the money.""

Olivia looked down.

For the first time, her anger seemed to weaken.

"Do you have proof?""

Mom stood.

"Yes.""

She walked to the hallway and returned with a small wooden box.

The box had brass hinges and a faded leather strap.

She placed it on the coffee table.

"This belonged to your father.""

Olivia stared at it.

Mom opened the lid.

Inside were old photographs, handwritten notes, and several sealed envelopes.

There was also a small key attached to a metal tag.

I picked it up.

The tag had three words engraved on it.

*ARCHIVE ROOM B.*

"What is this?""

Mom looked at me.

"Your father had a private storage room beneath the original foundation office. He used it to keep documents he didn't want anyone else accessing.""

"Does it still exist?""

"Yes. The building was renovated, but the basement was never removed.""

I turned the key in my hand.

"Why didn't you tell us about it?""

Mom looked embarrassed.

"Because I thought the room had been emptied years ago.""

Olivia opened one of the envelopes.

Inside was a handwritten note.

It read:

The ledger is not in the bank. The bank is only where they expect you to look.

She looked up.

"What ledger?""

Mom swallowed.

"The original accounting ledger. Your father used it to document every transfer Daniel made.""

I stared at the note.

"Then why did Richard say the evidence disappeared?""

"Because the foundation archive only contained copies. The original ledger was hidden somewhere else.""

I stood.

"We need to go there.""

Mom shook her head.

"The building belongs to the foundation. We need permission.""

"Richard can arrange that.""

I called him.

He answered immediately.

"Marcus?""

"We found a key. Archive Room B.""

There was a long silence.

Then Richard said something unexpected.

"Don't go there alone.""

"Why?""

"Because I received a call from the current property manager. Someone accessed the basement last night.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

"They claimed to be authorized by Eleanor.""

Mom shook her head.

"I didn't authorize anyone.""

Richard continued.

"Marcus, I checked the security footage. The person entered at 11:42 p.m.""

"Can you identify them?""

"Not clearly. But I recognized the vehicle.""

I waited.

"Daniel Mercer's company car.""

Olivia stood.

"He's looking for the ledger.""

Richard sighed.

"Yes. And if he finds it before we do, we may lose our only chance to prove what happened.""

Within an hour, Richard met us outside the old foundation building.

It was a brick structure on a quiet street near downtown Charlotte.

The organization had moved its main operations years earlier, but this building still housed historical records.

The property manager, a nervous man named Paul, unlocked the side entrance.

"I don't like people coming down here," he muttered.

"Especially at night.""

Richard showed him the foundation's authorization letter.

"We're not staying long.""

Paul led us down a narrow staircase.

The basement smelled of dust, damp concrete, and old cardboard.

A row of metal filing cabinets stood against one wall.

At the far end was a heavy wooden door.

A brass plate read:

*ARCHIVE ROOM B.*

I inserted the key.

It turned.

The door opened with a long groan.

Inside, the room was smaller than I expected.

There were shelves filled with boxes, old office equipment, and a steel filing cabinet.

But something was wrong.

Several boxes had been pulled from the shelves.

Documents lay scattered across the floor.

Someone had searched the room.

Olivia crouched beside a broken storage container.

"Look at this.""

She held up a torn envelope.

My father's handwriting was visible.

But the contents were gone.

Richard approached the filing cabinet.

"Marcus, help me move this.""

We shifted it several inches.

Behind it was a small wall safe.

The key from Mom's box didn't fit.

Instead, a handwritten combination was taped underneath the shelf.

I entered the numbers.

The safe clicked open.

Inside was a black leather ledger.

Beneath it sat a small cassette recorder and a sealed envelope.

Mom covered her mouth.

"Your father...""

She couldn't finish.

I opened the envelope.

The letter inside was dated two days before my father's accident.

Eleanor, if anything happens to me, protect Marcus. Daniel has discovered the second account. He knows about Olivia. He will do whatever it takes to control both.

My hands trembled.

There was another paragraph.

The person helping Daniel is closer to us than you think.

I read that line aloud.

Nobody moved.

Olivia looked at Mom.

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

"Well, well. I was wondering how long it would take you to find this.""

We turned.

Daniel Mercer stood in the doorway.

His expensive gray suit looked completely out of place in the dusty basement.

Two men stood behind him.

He smiled at me.

"Give me the ledger, Marcus.""

I held it against my chest.

"No.""

Daniel sighed.

"Your father made exactly the same mistake.""

Olivia stepped forward.

"Stay away from us.""

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"Olivia, sweetheart. You don't understand what you're doing.""

"I understand enough.""

He glanced at the letter in my hand.

Then his eyes settled on Mom.

"After all these years, Eleanor, you're still making things difficult.""

Mom stood straighter.

"You stole from my husband.""

Daniel laughed.

"Your husband stole from me.""

Richard stepped between them.

"Daniel, you're trespassing. Leave immediately.""

Daniel ignored him.

He looked at me.

"You have no idea what's in that ledger. And you certainly don't know what happens if it becomes public.""

I tightened my grip.

"Then perhaps you should have left it alone.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

He turned to one of the men behind him.

"Get it.""

The man stepped forward.

But before he could reach us, Olivia pulled out her phone.

"Don't move," she said.

Daniel frowned.

"What's that supposed to mean?""

Olivia held up the screen.

A red recording indicator was blinking.

"Everything you just said is being recorded.""

For the first time, Daniel looked uncertain.

Then he laughed.

"You think a recording will save you?""

Olivia's voice was steady.

"No. But the police might.""

Daniel glanced toward the stairs.

And suddenly, sirens sounded outside.

He looked back at me.

His smile returned.

"You're going to regret this, Marcus.""

Then he walked away.

But as the officers entered the basement, one of them called out:

"Mr. Bennett, before we take your statement, we need to tell you something.""

He held up a document.

"Your wife has reported your mother missing.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

The officer looked at his paperwork.

"According to the report, Eleanor Bennett was removed from her residence against her will.""

Mom looked at me in disbelief.

Then the officer added:

"Your wife also claims you stole confidential foundation records and assaulted Daniel Mercer.""

I looked toward the doorway.

Daniel was smiling again.

May you like

And I realized this wasn't just about stealing eight million dollars anymore.

He was trying to make us look like criminals before we had the chance to expose him.
