Chapter 6: The Debt My Wife Put in My Name

I stared at the photograph until the words blurred.

Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

My name.

My signature.

My home address.

And a date from four months earlier.

I had never applied for a business loan with Gregory Whitmore.

I had never agreed to guarantee anybody's debt.

Yet the document claimed otherwise.

I immediately called Michael.

He answered before the first ring finished.

"Did you see it?""

"Yes. Where did you get this?""

"Gregory sent it to me when we were putting the deal together.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Vanessa told him you had approved everything.""

I gripped the edge of the kitchen island.

"Did you believe her?""

"At first, yes.""

"Michael, you've known me your entire life. Have I ever agreed to guarantee a stranger's business loan?""

"No.""

"Then why didn't you call me?""

He didn't answer.

I looked at the document again.

The guarantee listed our family home as additional security.

A separate page contained a photocopy of my driver's license.

I felt sick.

"Where did Gregory get my identification?""

Michael hesitated.

"Vanessa gave him a copy.""

I turned toward my wife.

She was standing near the refrigerator, watching me.

"Did you give Gregory my driver's license?""

Her face crumpled.

"Daniel...""

"Answer me.""

"Yes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why?""

"He needed to complete the preliminary paperwork.""

"What preliminary paperwork?""

"The business loan application.""

I stared at her.

"You gave a man my identification so he could borrow $350,000 in my name?""

"It wasn't supposed to happen like that!""

"Then how was it supposed to happen?""

Vanessa began crying.

"Gregory said the loan was only temporary. He needed someone with a strong credit history to guarantee the investment.""

"And you volunteered me?""

"You wouldn't have agreed if I had asked.""

"Because I would have said no!""

She pressed her hands against her face.

Emily stood from the table.

"Mom, did you use Dad's identity too?""

Vanessa didn't respond.

I took the document and examined the signature.

It looked similar to mine, but there were differences.

The middle initial was too large.

The final letters were connected in a way I never used.

I photographed every page.

Then I called the attorney whose number I'd received from a colleague the previous evening.

Her name was Patricia Reynolds.

I explained the situation as clearly as possible.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she asked me to email the documents immediately.

"Daniel," she said, "do not sign anything else. Do not agree to any repayment arrangement. Do not allow anyone to pressure you into acknowledging this debt.""

"I haven't signed anything.""

"Good. We need to establish whether this guarantee was ever submitted to a lender and whether your identity was used without authorization.""

"What about my house?""

"Bring me the deed and every document connected to the attempted sale. We also need to notify the title company in writing that you dispute the transaction.""

I agreed.

Before hanging up, she added something important.

"Your wife may have created financial exposure beyond the money already transferred. We need to investigate every account and application connected to your identity.""

I looked at Vanessa.

"Understood.""

After the call, I began gathering documents.

Emily helped me organize the bank statements. Ava contacted the dealership to ask about reversing the Mustang purchase.

The dealership representative explained that the vehicle had not yet been fully delivered because the financing paperwork remained incomplete.

That was a relief.

Ava requested that the transaction be canceled pending a review of the financing arrangement.

For the first time that morning, she looked slightly less frightened.

"I should have asked where the money came from," she said.

I shook my head.

"You're not responsible for what your mother did.""

"But I enjoyed the surprise.""

"You're allowed to be happy about receiving a gift. You weren't told the truth.""

She nodded, though her eyes remained downcast.

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat at the kitchen table, staring at the documents.

Eventually, she spoke.

"Gregory told me everything would work.""

I didn't look up.

"How long have you been talking to him?""

She hesitated.

"Almost a year.""

Emily stopped typing.

I slowly raised my head.

"A year?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He contacted me through social media. He said he had changed. He apologized for how things ended between us.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"And you started giving him money?""

"No. Not immediately.""

"When?""

She looked at her hands.

"After he told me his business was struggling.""

I shook my head.

"You reconnected with your former boyfriend, hid it from your family, opened a joint account, and started transferring money?""

"It wasn't like that at first.""

"Then tell me what it was like.""

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

"He made me feel important again. He said I had spent my entire adult life taking care of everyone else. He said I deserved to build something of my own.""

Emily stared at her.

"By taking my money?""

Vanessa looked devastated.

"I didn't think it would go this far.""

"How much did you think you could take before it became too much?""

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa's phone vibrated.

She glanced at it and immediately turned the screen facedown.

I noticed.

"Who is it?""

"Nobody.""

"Show me.""

"It's private.""

I let out a slow breath.

"Vanessa, we're already dealing with forged documents, missing money, and an attempted sale of our home. There isn't room for another secret.""

She hesitated.

Then the phone vibrated again.

This time, a message preview appeared on the screen.

*Gregory: Stop talking to Daniel. He has no idea what the second account is for.*

I reached for the phone.

Vanessa pulled it away.

"Don't!""

I looked at her.

"What second account?""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

Emily stood up.

"Can't what? Tell the truth?""

Vanessa began shaking.

I took a step closer.

"How many accounts are there?""

She finally opened her banking application.

There were two linked accounts.

The first was the joint account Emily had discovered.

The second had a different name.

It was registered to Gregory's business.

I looked at the balance.

$148,700.

I frowned.

"Where did that money come from?""

Vanessa whispered, "Investors.""

"Which investors?""

She shook her head.

I clicked on the available transaction history.

Several deposits appeared from different individuals and companies.

But one entry made my stomach drop.

A deposit of $35,000 had come from a company called Carter Family Holdings.

I stared at it.

That company was connected to the small rental property my father had left me years earlier.

I had never authorized a transfer from it.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Did you access my father's property account too?""

She began crying harder.

"I thought I could replace everything before you noticed.""

I felt my chest tighten.

Then I opened the account's details.

The $35,000 transfer wasn't the only one.

There had been another withdrawal.

And another.

The total taken from my father's property account was $74,500.

I slowly turned the laptop toward her.

"Vanessa, you've been stealing from three different places.""

She covered her mouth.

I looked at the screen again.

The newest transaction was dated that morning.

A $12,000 withdrawal had been attempted.

Its status showed pending.

I called the bank immediately and requested an emergency freeze.

The representative asked whether I recognized the recipient listed on the transaction.

I read the name aloud.

Then she asked me to repeat it.

It was an unfamiliar company.

But when I searched the company registration details, I discovered its registered mailing address.

It was the same Charlotte property Vanessa had purchased with Gregory.

I turned toward her.

"Who owns this company?""

She stared at the screen.

Then she whispered:

"Gregory.""

I leaned closer.

"Who else?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Michael.""

My phone rang.

It was my brother again.

I answered.

"Michael, why is your name on another company connected to Gregory?""

He sounded terrified.

"Daniel, don't transfer anything. Don't agree to anything. I just found out something.""

"What?""

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Gregory has been using our names to borrow money from private lenders.""

I gripped the phone.

"How much?""

Michael swallowed.

"Over a million dollars.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She slowly lowered herself into a chair.

Then Michael said the words that changed everything.

"And Daniel, there's one more name on the loan documents.""

"Whose?""

He paused.

"Your mother.""

My blood ran cold.

"That's impossible. She's been dead for three years.""

"I know.""

Then he sent another photograph.

It showed a document dated two months earlier.

A signature beneath the words GUARANTOR.

My mother's name.

May you like

And beneath it, a sentence that made me realize Gregory hadn't simply stolen money.

He had been preparing to take everything our family had left behind.
