Chapter 15: The Recording My Mother Never Let Anyone Hear

Michael looked as though he had seen a ghost.

I stepped toward him.

"What recording?""

He shook his head.

"Not here.""

"Michael, we're not leaving until you explain.""

He glanced at Patricia.

Then at Harold.

Finally, he sat down and pressed both hands against his face.

"Eleven years ago, Thomas Lawson recorded a meeting with Gregory.""

Patricia immediately opened her notebook.

"What was discussed?""

"The missing company money. Gregory admitted that he had redirected several payments into accounts he controlled.""

My heart began pounding.

"Did the recording capture that admission?""

Michael nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where is it?""

He looked toward me.

"I have it.""

I stared at him.

"You've had evidence of Gregory's financial misconduct for eleven years?""

"Not the original. I made a copy before he took the recording.""

"Why didn't you give it to Mom?""

"I did.""

Harold looked up.

"Your mother received a copy?""

"Yes. She listened to it with me.""

I looked at the damaged photograph the officer had described.

"Then why did she write that I should ask you where the original recording is?""

Michael swallowed.

"Because she didn't trust me to keep it safe.""

The words hurt more than I expected.

"What does that mean?""

Michael reached into his jacket and pulled out a small USB drive.

He placed it on the table.

"This is a digital copy.""

Patricia looked at it.

"Where is the original?""

Michael hesitated.

"At my old storage unit.""

"Is it secure?""

"I think so.""

Patricia instructed him not to access it until the appropriate preservation arrangements could be made.

Then she asked whether he had any other copies.

Michael shook his head.

"This is the only one I have with me.""

I looked at him.

"Why keep it all these years?""

He lowered his eyes.

"Because Mom asked me to.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"She trusted you with this?""

"She told me that one day Gregory would come back. She said I needed to keep the recording safe until someone was ready to use it.""

I stared at the USB drive.

My mother had spent years preparing for a battle she hoped her family would never face.

And we had walked straight into it.

Patricia arranged for a forensic specialist to preserve and examine the digital file.

We waited in her conference room.

Michael sat across from me.

Neither of us spoke.

Eventually, he looked up.

"Daniel, I know you don't trust me.""

I said nothing.

"I deserve that.""

He rubbed his palms together.

"But I never wanted Emily to lose her money.""

"You accepted twenty thousand dollars from the project.""

"I know.""

"You knew Gregory had a history of stealing.""

"I thought he had changed.""

"People don't change simply because they tell you they have.""

Michael nodded.

"I know that now.""

I leaned forward.

"Why did Mom keep you involved?""

"Because I was the only person who had seen the original accounting records.""

I stared at him.

"Then why didn't she tell me?""

"She didn't want you caught in the middle. You had two daughters, a mortgage, and a job. She thought keeping you away from Gregory would protect you.""

I looked down.

My mother had tried to protect me.

And somehow, the secret had become a weapon Gregory used against us.

The forensic specialist arrived shortly afterward.

She created a verified copy of the USB contents and checked the file integrity.

The recording was approximately twenty-three minutes long.

Patricia asked whether we could listen to it.

The specialist explained that we could review the preserved copy while maintaining the original evidence.

She connected the laptop to the conference room speakers.

A man's voice filled the room.

Thomas Lawson.

"I want to know where the money went, Gregory.""

Then Gregory answered.

"You're asking questions you don't understand.""

"I understand that $185,000 disappeared from the company account.""

"Those funds were moved temporarily.""

"Into your personal accounts?""

Silence.

Then Gregory laughed.

"You're going to destroy a good business over accounting adjustments?""

Thomas's voice became louder.

"You stole from my family.""

Gregory responded coldly.

"Your family has been paid.""

"Rebecca hasn't received anything.""

"Then she should stop asking.""

I felt my fists tighten.

The recording continued.

Thomas mentioned several transfers, including one involving a company that had been registered under another person's name.

Then Gregory said something that made Michael lower his head.

"You're not the only person who approved those transactions, Michael.""

I looked at my brother.

The recording continued.

Gregory explained that Michael had approved payment requests without verifying the final recipients.

Michael's voice appeared briefly.

"I approved contractor payments. I didn't authorize you to move money into private accounts.""

Gregory laughed.

"Good luck proving that.""

Then Thomas asked the question that changed everything.

"Who else knows?""

Gregory answered:

"Margaret Carter knows more than she should.""

I stopped breathing.

My mother.

Gregory continued.

"She has copies of the records. But she won't release them unless we give her something she wants.""

Thomas asked what that was.

Gregory's answer was chilling.

"Control of the partnership.""

I looked at Harold.

He nodded slowly.

The recording continued for another several minutes.

Gregory discussed the possibility of using different companies to conceal the transfers.

He mentioned creating additional business entities under names belonging to people he trusted.

Then came a sentence that made my stomach turn.

"Once the original records disappear, nobody will be able to prove where the money came from.""

The recording ended abruptly.

Nobody spoke.

Patricia finally broke the silence.

"This is significant evidence, but we will need to verify the recording's authenticity, context, and connection to the transactions we're investigating.""

I nodded.

"Can it help us recover Emily's money?""

"It may help establish a broader pattern of conduct. The recovery of the trust funds will still require tracing the actual transfers.""

Michael leaned forward.

"There's more.""

I turned toward him.

"What?""

"The recording wasn't complete.""

Patricia frowned.

"What do you mean?""

"Thomas made another recording after that meeting.""

"Where is it?""

Michael hesitated.

"Mom had it.""

Harold looked up.

"Your mother never gave me a second recording.""

"Because she didn't want anyone else to know it existed.""

I stared at him.

"Where would she have kept it?""

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know. But she told me the second recording contained the name of the person who helped Gregory move the money.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Someone inside the family?""

Michael nodded.

"That's what she believed.""

The room became silent.

Patricia closed the laptop.

"We need to be careful. We cannot assume the identity of that person without evidence.""

I agreed.

But I couldn't ignore the possibility.

Vanessa had already helped Gregory access our accounts.

Michael had approved some payments years earlier.

Someone had forged my signature.

And someone had used my mother's name after her death.

Then Harold opened the damaged photograph again.

He examined the back carefully.

"There is something written beneath the message.""

He tilted it toward the light.

A second line appeared in faint blue ink.

*The second voice is not Gregory's.*

I stared at the words.

"Whose voice is it?""

Harold shook his head.

"I don't know.""

Michael suddenly stood.

"I do.""

I turned toward him.

He looked terrified.

"It was someone I never expected to hear in that room.""

"Who?""

Michael swallowed.

Then he spoke.

"Vanessa.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"That's impossible. Vanessa wasn't involved with Gregory's business eleven years ago.""

Michael shook his head.

"She was there.""

Harold looked at him sharply.

"Are you certain?""

"I heard her voice on the second recording. Mom played it for me once.""

I stared at my brother.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Mom made me promise not to.""

I stood.

"Michael, what did Vanessa say on that recording?""

He looked directly into my eyes.

Then he answered:

"She told Gregory exactly how to move the Lawson family's money without leaving a trace.""

My entire world seemed to collapse again.

Vanessa hadn't simply been manipulated by Gregory.

She might have been part of his operation long before she ever married me.

And suddenly, I understood why my mother had written that warning.

The Mustang, the missing college fund, the forged house-sale documents, and the mysterious business accounts might have been only the latest chapter of a betrayal that had started twelve years earlier.
