Chapter 1: The Birthday Present That Destroyed Everything

When I pulled into my driveway that Friday evening, I thought I was coming home to celebrate my youngest daughter's eighteenth birthday.

Instead, I discovered that my wife had apparently spent our oldest daughter's entire future on a birthday present.

A brand-new Mustang sat in the middle of the driveway, its metallic cherry-red paint reflecting the afternoon sunlight. A massive red bow covered the hood. My eighteen-year-old daughter, Ava, was practically dancing beside it, screaming with excitement.

My wife, Vanessa, stood next to her, holding up a shiny key fob.

"Happy birthday, sweetheart! You deserve the best!""

Ava threw both arms around her mother.

"Oh my God! Mom! Is this really mine?""

Vanessa laughed proudly.

"Every single bit of it. Go ahead. Take a look inside.""

I shut off my engine but remained behind the steering wheel.

Something about the scene felt wrong.

Not because I didn't want Ava to have a nice birthday. I loved both my daughters more than anything. But a brand-new Mustang wasn't an ordinary purchase for our family.

I had been working overtime for months. We had discussed postponing our kitchen renovation because money was tight. Vanessa had even complained about the rising cost of groceries.

So where had this car come from?

I stepped out.

"Vanessa, can I talk to you for a second?""

She barely glanced at me.

"Not now, Daniel. We're celebrating.""

I looked at the Mustang again.

"Where did you get the money for that?""

Her smile tightened.

"Seriously? You're going to start this?""

"I'm asking a simple question.""

"Don't be a buzzkill on your daughter's birthday.""

Ava climbed into the driver's seat, running her hands over the leather steering wheel.

"Dad! Look at this! Mom got me the premium package!""

I forced a smile.

"That's a beautiful car, sweetheart.""

"Can I drive it tomorrow?""

"We'll talk about insurance and registration first.""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Of course. You can't even let her enjoy one moment without turning it into a lecture.""

I didn't answer.

That's when I noticed Emily.

My oldest daughter was standing near the garage entrance, almost hidden behind the partially open door.

She wasn't smiling.

At twenty-one, Emily was usually the responsible one. She was attending college in another city and had come home for her sister's birthday weekend.

But right now, her face was completely drained of color.

She held her laptop against her chest.

"Dad?""

Something in her voice made me turn immediately.

"What's wrong, sweetheart?""

"Can you come inside? Right now?""

Vanessa glanced over.

"Emily, whatever it is, it can wait. We're celebrating your sister.""

Emily didn't look at her.

"Please, Dad.""

I followed her into the house.

The moment we entered the kitchen, she placed her laptop on the counter and opened it.

Her fingers were trembling so badly that she struggled to type her password.

"What happened?"" I asked.

Emily swallowed.

"I checked Grandma's college account.""

My stomach tightened.

"What about it?""

"It's empty.""

I stared at her.

"What do you mean, empty?""

She turned the screen toward me.

The account balance showed exactly $0.00.

I leaned closer.

That account had been established by my mother before she died. She had spent years saving for Emily's education, depositing money whenever she could.

After she passed away, I continued contributing whenever possible.

The balance had reached $92,000.

There was supposed to be enough for Emily to finish college without drowning in student loans.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Emily clicked the transaction history.

"Look at these.""

Several wire transfers appeared across the screen.

One for $8,500.

Another for $12,000.

Then $10,000.

The final transaction was considerably larger.

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Who authorized these?""

Emily shook her head.

"I didn't. I haven't touched that money.""

I scrolled through the transactions.

Every transfer had been completed within the previous five days.

Then Vanessa walked into the kitchen.

She was still carrying the Mustang key.

Her expression changed the instant she saw the laptop.

"What are you doing?""

I turned toward her.

"Where is Emily's money?""

She glanced at the screen, then at the doorway.

"Keep your voice down.""

"Where is the ninety-two thousand dollars?""

Ava appeared behind her, still holding the car keys.

"What's happening?""

Vanessa quickly stepped between Ava and the laptop.

"Nothing, sweetheart. Your father is upset about some banking issue.""

Emily let out a broken laugh.

"Banking issue? Mom, you emptied my entire college account!""

Ava's smile disappeared.

"What?""

I pointed toward the driveway.

"Did you use Emily's college savings to buy that car?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"She deserved something special for her eighteenth birthday.""

Emily stared at her mother.

"That money was supposed to pay for my tuition this fall!""

"You have scholarships," Vanessa snapped.

"They don't cover everything!""

"You're smart. You'll figure it out.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Your mother saved that money for Emily before she died. You had no right to take it.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"I'm her mother. I manage this household. I made a decision.""

"You don't get to steal from one daughter to spoil the other.""

Ava slowly lowered the keys.

"I didn't know, Mom.""

Vanessa turned sharply.

"Nobody asked you to get involved.""

Emily wiped her cheeks.

"Where did the rest go?""

Vanessa looked away.

That was when Emily clicked on the largest transfer.

"Dad, there's something else.""

I leaned over her shoulder.

The transaction showed that $62,000 had been wired to an account that wasn't ours.

I read the recipient's name.

Then I read it again.

*Gregory Whitmore.*

My hands went cold.

Gregory was Vanessa's former boyfriend.

A man she had supposedly stopped speaking to more than ten years ago.

I slowly turned toward my wife.

"Vanessa...""

She didn't answer.

"Why did you send sixty-two thousand dollars to Gregory Whitmore?""

Her lips parted.

For the first time since I'd known her, my wife looked genuinely terrified.

And before she could respond, Emily clicked another document attached to the transfer.

It was a signed authorization form.

My name appeared at the bottom.

Except I had never signed it.
