Chapter 13: The Secret My Brother Had Kept for Twelve Years

I couldn't stop looking at the photograph.

My mother stood outside a commercial building, wearing the blue coat she used to wear every winter. Gregory stood beside her, smiling at the camera. Michael was on her other side, one hand resting on the shoulder of a woman I had never seen before.

The photograph was dated twelve years earlier.

That was four years before my mother died.

And it was at least eleven years before Vanessa claimed Gregory had reentered her life.

I turned the photograph over again.

*Michael knows what happened to the first family Gregory destroyed.*

"Harold, who is this woman?""

He adjusted his glasses.

"I believe her name is Rebecca Lawson.""

I looked at Patricia.

"Is she related to Richard Lawson?""

Patricia nodded slowly.

"Richard is her brother.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

The same Richard Lawson who had appeared at my front door representing the private lending company.

"What happened to Rebecca?""

Harold closed the folder.

"Your mother never told me the complete story. She only said that Rebecca and her family had suffered significant financial losses connected to Gregory's business activities.""

I immediately called Michael.

He answered after several rings.

"Daniel?""

"Why are you in a photograph with Gregory and my mother?""

Silence.

I continued.

"Who is Rebecca Lawson?""

Michael exhaled.

"Where did you get that photograph?""

"From Mom's estate records.""

He didn't answer.

"Michael, I'm asking you a question.""

Finally, he spoke.

"Rebecca was Gregory's first business partner's wife.""

"What happened to her?""

"Her husband died.""

I sat down.

"How?""

"An accident. At least, that's what everyone believed.""

I looked at Harold.

He was listening carefully.

Michael continued.

"Before he died, Rebecca's husband, Thomas, had been investigating missing money from their construction company. Gregory was managing the accounts.""

"How much money?""

"More than four hundred thousand dollars.""

I closed my eyes.

"Was Gregory stealing it?""

"I don't know everything. But Thomas believed he was.""

"And my mother?""

"She helped Rebecca after the company collapsed. She reviewed some financial records and found transactions that didn't make sense.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Michael's voice became strained.

"Because Mom asked me not to.""

I stood.

"She told you to keep this secret?""

"She wanted to protect you.""

"From what?""

Michael hesitated.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Gregory threatened our family twelve years ago.""

I looked at Patricia.

"What did he do?""

"After Thomas died, Rebecca tried to recover the company's money. Gregory told her that if she continued asking questions, he would make sure she lost her house too.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"Did Mom help her?""

"Yes. Mom paid for Rebecca's attorney. She also helped her collect evidence.""

"Then what happened?""

"Rebecca disappeared from the business world. She moved away. Gregory told everyone she had been responsible for the missing money.""

I stared at the photograph.

"And you believed him?""

"No. I knew he was lying.""

"How?""

Michael went quiet.

"Because I worked for him.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"What?""

"Before I started my own construction company, I worked as a project manager for Gregory's business.""

I gripped the phone.

"For how long?""

"Almost two years.""

"Why didn't I know that?""

"You were living in another state. We weren't close at the time.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Michael had been standing beside Gregory and my mother long before Vanessa ever reconnected with him.

"Did you know Gregory was stealing?""

"I suspected it.""

"Did you help him?""

"No!""

His response came so quickly that I believed he was frightened rather than angry.

"I didn't steal anything, Daniel. I swear.""

"Then why is your name connected to his current companies?""

"Because he promised me a way out of my financial problems. I thought he had changed.""

I closed my eyes.

"You knew what happened to Rebecca. You knew what Mom suspected. And you still worked with him.""

"I thought the past was over.""

"It wasn't over for Emily.""

Michael said nothing.

I continued.

"Your decisions helped him get access to my family.""

"I'm sorry.""

"Sorry doesn't put ninety-two thousand dollars back into Emily's account.""

"I know.""

"Then start telling the truth.""

Michael finally agreed to meet us at Patricia's office that afternoon.

When he arrived, he looked exhausted.

He placed a thick envelope on the conference table.

"I brought everything I still have.""

Patricia opened it.

Inside were old invoices, construction contracts, payment schedules, and several printed messages between Michael and Gregory.

One email stood out.

It was dated eleven years earlier.

Gregory had written:

*The Lawson family needs to stop asking questions. We have already settled their outstanding balance. Make sure the original records are removed.*

Michael's reply was short.

*I won't destroy anything.*

Gregory responded:

*Then you should think carefully about who you're protecting.*

I looked at my brother.

"You received this eleven years ago?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"Because I was twenty-seven, Daniel. I had just started working in the industry. Gregory controlled my job, and I was afraid.""

I understood fear.

But I also understood what happened when people remained silent.

"Did Mom know about this email?""

Michael nodded.

"I showed it to her.""

Harold leaned forward.

"Did you give her the original records?""

"Yes. She copied everything and told me to keep one set.""

Patricia examined the documents.

"These may be relevant to the current financial investigation. We need to preserve the originals and establish how they were obtained.""

Michael agreed.

Then he pulled another document from the envelope.

It was a handwritten statement signed by Rebecca Lawson.

The statement described how Gregory had transferred company funds into accounts he controlled, then blamed Thomas when the money disappeared.

It also described a meeting shortly before Thomas's death.

According to Rebecca, Gregory had threatened to destroy their family if Thomas reported the missing money.

I felt sick.

"Did Thomas die because of Gregory?""

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know. Nobody proved that.""

Patricia immediately intervened.

"We cannot draw conclusions about the death from this statement alone. But it may justify further examination of the financial misconduct and any related threats.""

I nodded.

Then Michael looked directly at me.

"There's something else I haven't told you.""

I felt my patience wearing thin.

"What now?""

"Gregory didn't approach Vanessa because he wanted to start a business with her.""

I stared at him.

"Then why?""

Michael lowered his voice.

"He knew your mother had left something for the girls. He believed the family investment trust contained the original partnership shares.""

Harold nodded.

"That's consistent with the estate records.""

Michael continued.

"He wanted control of those shares because they could expose what happened to Thomas's company.""

I looked at Emily.

She was listening silently.

"How much control would he get?"" I asked.

"Enough to access the old partnership records and potentially prevent the remaining investors from bringing claims.""

The room became silent.

My mother hadn't simply protected money for her granddaughters.

She had preserved evidence that could expose years of financial misconduct.

And Gregory had been trying to reach it.

Michael looked at me.

"Daniel, there's one more thing. Gregory knows I still have those old emails.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"How?""

"He called me last night.""

"What did he say?""

Michael pulled out his phone.

He played a recorded voicemail.

Gregory's voice filled the room.

"Michael, you have until Monday morning to return what belongs to me. If you don't, I'll make sure everyone knows what you did twelve years ago.""

The message ended.

Patricia looked at Michael.

"What is he accusing you of?""

Michael's face crumpled.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"He says I was the one who transferred the Lawson family's money.""
