Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I stared at the authorization form on Emily's laptop.
My full name appeared beneath the words ACCOUNT HOLDER APPROVAL.
The signature looked convincing at first glance.
But I knew my own handwriting.
The final stroke of my D always curved upward. This signature ended with a straight line.
Someone had copied my name.
"Vanessa," I said quietly.
"Explain this.""
She stepped toward the laptop.
"Give me that.""
I moved it away.
"Don't touch it.""
"Daniel, you're making a huge scene over something you don't understand.""
I pointed at the screen.
"That's my signature.""
She looked at me.
"Yes. I handled the paperwork.""
"You forged my signature?""
"I didn't forge anything!""
Emily was crying again.
"Then why does it say Dad authorized the transfer?""
Vanessa pressed her fingers against her forehead.
"Because your father and I have been discussing financial arrangements for months.""
I stared at her.
"We haven't discussed anything.""
Her eyes flashed.
"Not everything needs to be a family meeting!""
Ava stood frozen in the doorway.
The Mustang key fob was still hanging from her fingers.
"Mom," she whispered, "did you really use Emily's money?""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"I was trying to give you something wonderful.""
"But why?""
"Because you've worked hard. Because you deserve to have something that makes you happy.""
Emily shook her head.
"And I don't deserve to go to college?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
For a moment, she looked irritated rather than ashamed.
"Emily, you always make everything about yourself.""
I felt something inside me snap.
"Stop blaming her for asking where her money went.""
I pulled out my phone.
"I'm calling the bank.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Don't you dare.""
I looked at her.
"Excuse me?""
"Give me until tomorrow. I can explain everything.""
"Tomorrow? Your daughter starts college in a few weeks.""
"I said I'll handle it!""
Emily closed her laptop halfway.
"Mom, I need that money.""
Vanessa looked directly at her.
"You'll get it back.""
"From where?""
She didn't answer.
I called the bank's fraud department.
After verifying my identity, I explained that several unauthorized transfers had emptied an educational trust account.
The representative asked me to confirm the transaction dates.
I read them aloud.
Then she placed me on hold.
Vanessa paced between the refrigerator and the kitchen island.
Ava stood beside Emily, rubbing her sister's shoulder.
When the representative returned, her voice became noticeably more serious.
"Mr. Carter, I can confirm that the transfers were processed using valid account credentials. However, the authorization documents contain a secondary verification record that may be relevant to your dispute.""
"What kind of verification?""
"An electronic approval completed through a registered device.""
"Which device?""
There was a pause.
"An iPhone registered under Vanessa Carter.""
I looked directly at my wife.
She stopped pacing.
The representative continued.
"We've placed a temporary restriction on the remaining linked accounts while the investigation proceeds. You'll need to submit a formal fraud affidavit.""
"Do that immediately.""
"Certainly. However, I should also inform you that the recipient account for the largest transfer is not a personal account belonging solely to Mr. Whitmore.""
I leaned closer to the phone.
"What does that mean?""
"The account is jointly registered under Gregory Whitmore and another individual.""
"Who?""
The representative hesitated.
"I can provide the name through the formal investigation documents.""
I ended the call after obtaining the case number.
Vanessa was watching me.
"Who else is on that account?"" I asked.
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie to me.""
"I don't know, Daniel!""
Emily reopened the laptop.
"There's another attachment.""
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"Emily, stop!""
But Emily clicked it.
The document was a wire transfer confirmation containing the destination account's registration information.
The second name appeared beneath Gregory's.
*Vanessa Carter.*
My wife had sent sixty-two thousand dollars into an account she shared with her former boyfriend.
Ava covered her mouth.
"Mom...""
I felt as though the kitchen floor had shifted beneath me.
"You're sharing a bank account with Gregory?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"It's not what you think.""
"Then tell me what it is.""
She looked toward the window.
"I was helping someone.""
"With our daughter's college money?""
"Gregory was in trouble.""
I stared at her.
"Why would you give him sixty-two thousand dollars?""
"He needed it.""
"For what?""
She hesitated.
Then she said something that made my stomach turn.
"He was going to lose his business.""
I laughed once, bitterly.
"His business? You stole from your own daughter to rescue your ex-boyfriend's business?""
"Don't say it like that.""
"How else should I say it?""
Vanessa reached for my arm.
I stepped away.
Emily was staring at her mother.
"Did Grandma know about Gregory?""
Vanessa's expression suddenly hardened.
"Your grandmother had nothing to do with this.""
"Then why did you take the money she left me?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Ava placed the Mustang keys on the counter.
"I don't want the car.""
Vanessa spun around.
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"I said I don't want it.""
"You've been asking for this car for two years!""
"Not if Emily had to lose her future for it!""
Vanessa looked between her daughters.
For the first time, she seemed unable to control the room.
I picked up my phone again.
"I'm calling an attorney.""
Her face went pale.
"You wouldn't.""
"Watch me.""
Then Emily quietly spoke.
"Dad, there's something else in the bank records.""
I turned.
"What?""
She pointed to a series of smaller transfers made months before the large withdrawals.
They were labeled as administrative adjustments.
Each one had gone to the same joint account.
I counted them.
Seven transactions.
The first dated back eleven months.
"Mom," Emily whispered, "how long have you been doing this?""
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Then her phone began ringing.
The name displayed across it was Gregory Whitmore.
She immediately rejected the call.
A second later, a message appeared.
I couldn't see the entire message from where I stood.
But I saw the first sentence.
*You need to tell Daniel about the house before he finds the deed.*
I looked at my wife.
"What house?""
She grabbed her phone.
"Nobody needs to discuss this tonight.""
But I had already read enough.
"Vanessa, what house is Gregory talking about?""
She backed toward the hallway.
And then Emily opened another attachment.
A property document.
May you like
With my wife's signature.
And a purchase date from three months earlier.
