Chapter 14: The Evidence That Could Destroy My Brother

Michael sat with his head lowered.

For the first time in years, I saw the frightened young man he had been before starting his own company.

"Did you transfer the money?"" I asked.

He shook his head.

"No.""

"Then why is Gregory threatening you?""

"Because he has documents with my name on them.""

Patricia leaned forward.

"Mr. Carter, I need you to explain exactly what happened.""

Michael took a breath.

"Eleven years ago, Gregory asked me to approve several payments for a construction project. He said they were contractor reimbursements.""

"Did you approve them?""

"Some of them. But I didn't know the money was coming from the Lawson company's reserve account.""

"How much?""

"Approximately $185,000.""

I looked at the statement.

The amount matched the transfer my mother had documented.

Michael continued.

"When Rebecca discovered the missing money, Gregory told everyone I had approved the transactions without authorization.""

"Had you?""

"I approved payment requests, but I never approved transfers into Gregory's private accounts.""

Patricia examined the old invoices.

"Did you retain copies of the original payment instructions?""

Michael nodded.

He removed another folder.

Inside were signed payment requests, contractor invoices, and a series of internal accounting reports.

Patricia studied them carefully.

"These records may be important. Some appear to show that the payments were redirected after your approval.""

Michael nodded.

"That's what I told Mom.""

I looked at him.

"Why didn't you bring this to me years ago?""

He rubbed his face.

"Because I was ashamed. I lost my job. Gregory told everyone I was responsible. I spent years trying to rebuild my reputation.""

"And then you went back to work with him?""

"I know how it sounds.""

"It sounds like you trusted the same man who destroyed your career.""

Michael looked down.

"I was desperate.""

I understood that desperation could make people do things they normally wouldn't.

But it didn't excuse what he had done recently.

"You still accepted twenty thousand dollars from the money taken from Emily's trust.""

His eyes filled.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"I thought it was legitimate investment capital.""

"Did you know Vanessa was using our house as collateral?""

"No. I only found out after Gregory showed me the loan agreement.""

I stood and walked toward the window.

My brother had been foolish, dishonest, and reckless.

But the documents suggested he might also have been manipulated.

I turned back.

"Are you willing to provide a formal statement?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Will you return the twenty thousand?""

"I'll sell my work truck if I have to.""

I stared at him.

"Don't make promises you can't keep. Speak with Patricia. We'll deal with the money through the proper channels.""

Patricia gathered the evidence.

"We need to contact Rebecca Lawson. Her statement may help clarify the original transactions.""

Harold searched his records.

"I have an old contact number.""

He called.

After several attempts, someone answered.

"Hello?""

"Ms. Lawson, my name is Harold Bennett. I represented the estate of Margaret Carter. I'm calling because her family has uncovered new information concerning Gregory Whitmore.""

There was a long pause.

Then the woman spoke.

"Margaret's family?""

"Yes.""

"Is Daniel there?""

I stepped closer.

"This is Daniel.""

Her voice trembled.

"Your mother helped save my life.""

I swallowed.

"I'm sorry we never met.""

"She told me to stay away from Gregory. She said he would eventually try again.""

I looked at Patricia.

"Did you know he had contacted my wife?""

"No. But I always feared he would find another way into your family.""

I explained what had happened with Emily's college fund, the Mustang, the house sale, and the forged loan documents.

Rebecca was silent for several seconds.

Then she said:

"He's using the same method.""

"What method?""

"He creates an investment opportunity, convinces someone close to the family to provide access to financial records, and then uses forged documents to make the money appear legitimate.""

Patricia asked her whether she still had the original records from her husband's company.

Rebecca answered immediately.

"Yes.""

My heart began pounding.

"Where?""

"In a storage unit in Virginia. Margaret helped me preserve them before she died.""

Harold looked up.

"Did you ever send her copies?""

"Yes. She kept a separate set.""

I looked at the folder on the table.

The second folder.

The evidence my mother had hidden.

Rebecca continued.

"There's something you need to know about Gregory's current business.""

"What?""

"He has been using a company called Whitmore Development Holdings to receive money from private investors. But that company isn't operating alone.""

Patricia asked for the associated business names.

Rebecca gave us three.

One belonged to Gregory.

One belonged to Michael.

And the third was registered under Vanessa's name.

I looked at my brother.

His face went pale.

"I didn't know about that third company.""

Rebecca continued.

"Gregory told me years ago that he wanted to build a network of businesses that could move money between different projects. I believe he's still using the same structure.""

Patricia wrote everything down.

"Ms. Lawson, would you be willing to provide a formal statement and make the original records available?""

"Yes.""

"Thank you. We'll arrange a secure way to receive them.""

After the call, Michael looked at me.

"I never knew he was using Vanessa's name like that.""

I didn't answer.

I was beginning to understand how Gregory had operated.

He didn't need to steal everything himself.

He needed people who trusted him to open doors.

And once they did, he made sure they had something to lose if they tried to leave.

That afternoon, Patricia received confirmation that the title company had formally suspended the house sale pending review.

The trust administrator also confirmed that no transfer of Emily and Ava's separate inheritance had been completed.

It was the first positive news we had received in days.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

"Daniel, please come home.""

"Why?""

"Gregory is here.""

My body went rigid.

"Are you safe?""

"I locked myself in the bedroom.""

"Where are the girls' documents?""

"In the study.""

"Don't leave the room. Call the police if you feel threatened.""

She began crying.

"Daniel, he knows you found the letter.""

I looked at Patricia.

"What did he say?""

"He said he wants the second folder.""

I felt a chill.

"How does he know about it?""

"I don't know. But he said if we don't give it to him, he'll make sure nobody gets to keep anything.""

Patricia immediately advised Vanessa to contact emergency services and remain somewhere secure.

I asked whether Gregory was still inside.

She whispered, "I can hear him downstairs.""

Then I heard a crash through the phone.

Vanessa screamed.

The call disconnected.

I stood up.

Patricia told me not to go to the house alone or confront Gregory.

She contacted the appropriate authorities and provided them with the threat information.

Michael stood beside me.

"Daniel, we have to help her.""

I looked at him.

"She's the person who helped him steal from my daughters.""

"I know. But if Gregory is inside that house, she's in danger.""

I couldn't argue with that.

We waited for confirmation from the authorities.

Several minutes later, my phone rang.

It was an officer.

They had reached the property.

Gregory was gone.

Vanessa was safe, though badly shaken.

The officer explained that a window in the study had been broken and several drawers had been emptied.

The metal filing cabinet was open.

My mother's old desk had been damaged.

I closed my eyes.

Gregory had been searching for the second folder.

Then the officer said something else.

"We recovered a small envelope from the floor near the desk. It appears to contain a photograph and a handwritten note.""

I asked him to describe the photograph.

He paused.

"Mr. Carter, there are three people in it.""

"Who?""

"Your mother, Gregory Whitmore, and a man named Thomas Lawson.""

I looked at Michael.

The photograph Rebecca had mentioned.

But there was something else.

The officer continued.

"The back of the photograph has a handwritten message.""

"What does it say?""

He read it aloud.

*If anything happens to me, ask Michael where the original recording is.*

I slowly turned toward my brother.

His face had gone completely white.

"Michael?""

He took a step backward.

May you like

Then he whispered:

"I thought Gregory destroyed that recording.""
