Chapter 16: My Wife Had Been Part of the Secret All Along
I stared at Michael, waiting for him to take back what he'd just said.
He didn't.
"You're telling me Vanessa helped Gregory steal from the Lawson family twelve years ago?""
Michael nodded.
"That's what the second recording suggested.""
"How could she have been involved? She told me she barely knew him before we met.""
Michael looked down.
"Daniel, Vanessa and Gregory were together long before you came into the picture.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"How long?""
"At least three years.""
I turned toward Harold.
"Did my mother know?""
Harold slowly opened another folder.
"She suspected Vanessa was involved in the financial transactions, but she never showed me definitive proof.""
I looked at Patricia.
"Can we obtain the second recording?""
Michael nodded.
"I think I know where Mom kept it.""
"Where?""
"In her old piano bench.""
I frowned.
"Her piano?""
"Yes. Remember the upright piano in the living room?""
I remembered it.
My mother had played it every Sunday morning. After she died, I moved it into storage because nobody in our house knew how to maintain it.
Michael continued.
"She used to keep important things beneath the removable panel. She told me once that some secrets were safer near the things people loved than inside a bank.""
Harold nodded.
"That sounds like something Margaret would do.""
Patricia immediately reminded us that we should not enter the house or disturb potential evidence without considering the ongoing investigation.
She contacted the officer handling the reported break-in and explained that we might have located another evidence container.
Arrangements were made for the piano and its contents to be examined.
While we waited, I called Vanessa.
She answered after several rings.
"Daniel?""
"Did you know Gregory twelve years ago?""
Silence.
"Vanessa?""
"Who told you that?""
I closed my eyes.
"That's not an answer.""
She began crying.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
"I knew him before I met you.""
"How well?""
"Daniel...""
"Were you involved in his business?""
She didn't respond.
I gripped the phone.
"Did you help him move money from the Lawson company?""
Her breathing became uneven.
"Where did you hear that?""
"Michael told me about the recording.""
She suddenly became angry.
"Michael has no right to bring up something that happened twelve years ago!""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"So it's true.""
"It was a different time.""
"Did you help him?""
Vanessa started crying again.
"I was young. I trusted him.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
She finally whispered:
"Yes.""
I closed my eyes.
"How much did you know?""
"I helped with paperwork. I didn't know everything he was doing.""
"Did you know money was being moved into private accounts?""
"At first, no.""
"And later?""
She went silent.
I looked at the conference room table.
"Vanessa, my mother knew.""
"Your mother hated Gregory.""
"Because she knew what he was doing.""
"She never understood our relationship.""
I almost laughed.
"Your relationship? You helped him move money from another family.""
"He told me the transfers were legitimate!""
"Then why did you hide it?""
"Because I knew what people would think.""
I leaned forward.
"Did you tell Gregory about the girls' trust?""
She hesitated.
Then she answered.
"Yes.""
My hands began shaking.
"When?""
"Several years ago.""
"Why?""
"He asked whether your mother had left anything for the girls. I told him there was an educational account for Emily.""
"And the second trust?""
"I didn't know its value.""
"That isn't what I asked.""
She started crying.
"I told him your mother had created another investment arrangement. I thought he already knew.""
I stared at the wall.
Vanessa had given Gregory the information he needed to target our daughters.
"Did you know he planned to take Emily's money?""
"No.""
"Did you know he planned to sell our house?""
"No.""
"Did you know he had forged my signature?""
She whispered something I could barely hear.
"What?""
"I knew about the guarantee.""
I stood.
"You knew?""
"He told me it was only temporary.""
I couldn't believe it.
"Vanessa, how many times were you going to let this man use our family?""
She began sobbing.
"I wanted to tell you.""
"When?""
"I don't know.""
"After the house was sold? After Emily lost her college fund? After Ava signed a six-year car loan?""
She had no answer.
I ended the call.
For the first time, I wasn't simply angry.
I was grieving the person I had believed my wife to be.
Patricia approached me.
"Daniel, I want you to understand that her admission is important, but we need to preserve it properly. Don't pressure her into further conversations. Let the investigators handle the next steps.""
I nodded.
An hour later, the officer contacted us.
The piano bench had been recovered from storage.
Inside the removable compartment was a small padded envelope containing a cassette tape, a USB drive, and several handwritten notes.
The evidence was transported for examination.
When the forensic specialist completed the initial preservation process, we were permitted to review a copy of the digital recording.
The specialist pressed play.
A woman's voice came through the speakers.
Vanessa.
She sounded younger, but unmistakably familiar.
"Gregory, if you move the money through the contractor account first, nobody will connect it to Rebecca.""
Gregory answered.
"What about Michael?""
"Michael signs what you put in front of him. He won't look at the final account.""
Then another voice interrupted.
My mother.
"Vanessa, I know exactly what you're doing.""
There was a long silence.
Vanessa responded angrily.
"You don't understand the business.""
My mother's voice remained calm.
"I understand that Rebecca's family is losing everything while you and Gregory move their money.""
Gregory laughed.
"Margaret, stay out of this.""
My mother answered:
"I already have the original statements. And I have copies of the transfer instructions.""
The recording continued.
Vanessa said something that made my blood run cold.
"Then maybe you should think about what happens if those papers disappear.""
My mother replied:
"Are you threatening me?""
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Gregory said:
"She's making a mistake.""
The recording ended.
I sat motionless.
My mother had confronted them.
She had known Vanessa was involved.
And she had preserved the conversation.
Patricia looked at the forensic specialist.
"Is there more?""
The specialist checked the remaining files.
There was another audio recording.
But before playing it, she examined the file properties.
Her expression changed.
"This second recording appears to have been created much later.""
"How much later?"" I asked.
"Approximately eighteen months before Margaret Carter died.""
I looked at Michael.
He shook his head.
"I never heard that one.""
The specialist pressed play.
My mother's voice filled the room.
"Vanessa, I am giving you one final opportunity to tell Daniel the truth.""
Then Vanessa answered.
"I can't. He'll leave me.""
My mother replied:
"Then perhaps you should have thought about that before you put his daughters in danger.""
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"Gregory says he can fix everything.""
My mother's voice became firm.
"Gregory is the reason everything is broken.""
The recording continued for another minute.
Then my mother said something that none of us expected.
"If he comes back for the girls' inheritance, he will be looking for the wrong thing.""
I looked at Harold.
"What does that mean?""
He didn't answer.
The specialist continued playing.
My mother spoke again.
"The money is protected. But the evidence is somewhere else.""
Then the recording ended.
I sat back.
My mother had hidden the second folder, protected the girls' trust, and left a recording that exposed Vanessa's involvement.
But there was still something we didn't understand.

Where was the original evidence Gregory had been trying so desperately to find?
And what exactly had my mother hidden somewhere else?
