Chapter 3: The Secret House Bought With My Mother's Money

The property document showed a three-bedroom house in a quiet neighborhood outside Charlotte, North Carolina.

The purchase price was $285,000.

I read the address twice.

I had never seen it before.

Then I noticed the closing date.

Three months earlier.

"Vanessa," I said, "you bought a house?""

She stood near the kitchen doorway, gripping her phone so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

"It's an investment.""

"An investment?""

"Yes.""

"With whose money?""

She looked toward Emily.

Nobody spoke.

I scrolled down.

The deed listed two owners.

Gregory Whitmore.

Vanessa Carter.

My wife and her former boyfriend had purchased a house together.

I felt my chest tighten.

"How long have you been seeing this man?""

Her head snapped up.

"Don't you dare accuse me of having an affair.""

"Then explain why you bought a house with him.""

"I told you. It's an investment property.""

"Why didn't I know about it?""

"Because you would have objected.""

I stared at her.

"That's your explanation?""

She crossed her arms.

"You've always been too cautious with money, Daniel. You think every dollar has to sit in a bank account until somebody retires.""

"That money belonged to Emily.""

"She wasn't using it!""

Emily looked up, her face wet with tears.

"I was going to use it in August.""

Vanessa dismissed her with a wave.

"You still have scholarships.""

"Mom, I already paid my enrollment deposit. I signed my housing agreement. I have classes scheduled.""

"Then defer for a semester.""

Emily's voice cracked.

"Do you even hear yourself?""

Ava stepped closer to her sister.

"Mom, why did you tell me the car was a gift from your savings?""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"Because I didn't want you worrying about money.""

Ava shook her head.

"You let me hug you. You let me cry. You watched me get excited about something bought with Emily's tuition.""

"You're eighteen, Ava. You don't understand adult finances.""

"I understand stealing.""

The words landed heavily.

Vanessa's face reddened.

"Don't speak to me that way.""

Ava looked down at the keys.

"I don't want anything from you.""

She pushed the key fob across the counter.

It stopped beside Emily's laptop.

I turned back to the property document.

There was something strange about the financing section.

The house had not been purchased entirely with the transferred money.

A $62,000 deposit had been made from the joint account. The remainder was financed through a mortgage.

But another section listed a second source of funds.

A personal loan.

The borrower was Vanessa.

The lender was Gregory Whitmore.

I frowned.

"What's this?""

Vanessa reached for the laptop.

"Daniel, enough.""

I pulled it toward me.

"Why did Gregory lend you money?""

She didn't respond.

"Did you borrow money from him to buy a house you both own?""

"It's complicated.""

"Everything seems to be complicated when you get caught.""

Emily leaned over the counter.

"There's another document attached.""

She clicked it.

It was a payment schedule.

The monthly mortgage payments were supposed to come from an account ending in 4817.

I recognized the last four digits.

It was our household savings account.

I opened my banking application.

The balance was lower than I expected.

I refreshed the screen.

Then I checked the transaction history.

Monthly payments of $1,850 had been leaving our account for the previous three months.

Every payment was labeled PROPERTY MANAGEMENT.

I looked up.

"You're using our household money to pay the mortgage too?""

Vanessa's silence answered me.

I felt sick.

For months, she had told me we couldn't afford certain expenses.

She had complained when I bought new tires for my truck. She had insisted we postpone replacing the broken dishwasher.

Meanwhile, she was financing a secret property with another man.

I opened the household account's recent activity.

There were more withdrawals.

A $4,200 transfer.

A $3,700 transfer.

And another $5,000 payment.

The money was disappearing in pieces.

I looked at her.

"How much have you taken from our household account?""

"I was going to replace it.""

"With what?""

She rubbed her forehead.

"Gregory promised the property would generate rental income.""

"Is it rented?""

She said nothing.

"Vanessa, is it rented?""

"No.""

"Then where is the money going?""

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, she didn't reject the call.

Gregory's name appeared.

I held out my hand.

"Put it on speaker.""

"No.""

"Then I'll call him myself.""

"You have no idea what you're getting involved in!""

I stared at her.

"I'm already involved. You used my daughter's education fund and our family savings.""

She finally answered.

"Hello?""

Gregory's voice came through loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"Vanessa, why aren't you answering me?""

She turned away.

"Not now, Gregory.""

"Did you transfer the remaining amount?""

My eyes narrowed.

Remaining amount?

I moved closer to the phone.

"What remaining amount?""

Silence.

Then Gregory spoke.

"Daniel?""

I felt every muscle in my body tighten.

"You know who I am?""

He laughed nervously.

"Look, man, this isn't a good time.""

"Did you receive my daughter's money?""

"Vanessa explained everything.""

"That's not what I asked.""

Vanessa grabbed the phone.

"Gregory, stop talking.""

But he continued.

"The sixty-two thousand was only the first payment. We had an agreement.""

I stared at my wife.

"What agreement?""

Gregory exhaled.

"She said you were going to sell the family house and move the money into the investment.""

The kitchen went completely silent.

I slowly lowered my phone.

"Sell our house?""

Vanessa looked as though she might collapse.

Gregory continued.

"She told me you'd already signed the preliminary documents.""

I shook my head.

"I haven't signed anything.""

Ava began crying.

Emily looked at her mother with disbelief.

"Mom, were you planning to sell our house?""

Vanessa ended the call.

Then she stood motionless, her face drained of color.

I walked toward her.

"How far did this go?""

She shook her head.

"You don't understand.""

"Then make me understand.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Gregory and I were trying to build something for the future.""

"Our future?""

She looked down.

I felt the answer before she spoke.

"Daniel, I was going to tell you eventually.""

"Eventually? After you sold our home?""

She didn't answer.

I reached for the property paperwork and noticed a second envelope attached to the digital file.

It contained preliminary real estate documents.

The first page had my full name.

The second had Vanessa's.

The third contained a photocopied signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

But the date was from two weeks earlier.

I hadn't signed anything two weeks earlier.

I looked at Emily.

"Can you download all of this? Every document. Every transaction.""

She nodded.

Then I turned toward Vanessa.

"You are not touching another dollar belonging to this family.""

She started crying.

"Daniel, please. We can fix this.""

I shook my head.

"You should have thought about fixing it before you took your daughter's future.""

Just then, Ava's phone rang.

It was the dealership.

She answered on speaker because her hands were shaking.

A cheerful female voice greeted her.

"Hello, Ava. We're calling to confirm the financing information for your new Mustang. We just need your signature on the final loan documents.""

I frowned.

"Financing?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

The dealership representative continued.

"Your mother listed you as the primary borrower, with a co-signer. We just need to verify that you understand the monthly payments.""

Ava looked at her mother.

"Mom, what?""

The representative read the amount.

"Your estimated monthly payment will be $1,146 for seventy-two months.""

Ava slowly lowered the phone.

"You said you bought it for me.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Sweetheart, I was going to explain.""

I stared at my wife.

She hadn't just stolen Emily's college savings.

She had apparently put our youngest daughter into six years of debt to disguise what she'd done.

And then Emily's laptop chimed.

A new email had arrived from the bank's fraud investigation department.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: ADDITIONAL ACCOUNT ACTIVITY — POSSIBLE PROPERTY FRAUD.*

Emily opened it.

Her eyes widened.

"Dad...""

I leaned over.

The bank had identified another attempted transaction.

This one hadn't gone through.

The amount was $180,000.

And the requested destination was the title company handling the sale of our family home.

At the bottom of the email was a scanned authorization form.

My name was signed again.

But this time, beneath my forged signature, there was something even more disturbing.

May you like

A handwritten note from Vanessa.

*He doesn't know about the sale. Complete everything before Monday.*
