Chapter 5: My Brother's Name Was on the Money
I called Michael at 8:17 the following morning.
He answered on the fourth ring.
"Hey, big brother. What's going on?""
His cheerful voice made my stomach turn.
"Are you working with Gregory Whitmore?""
The silence lasted barely two seconds.
But it was enough.
"Who told you that?""
I closed my eyes.
"So it's true.""
"Daniel, listen. It's not what you think.""
"That's what Vanessa said.""
He sighed.
"Look, I didn't want you dragged into this.""
I gripped the phone.
"You didn't want me dragged into a business deal involving my wife's former boyfriend and my daughter's stolen college money?""
Michael went quiet.
"What money?""
I almost lost my temper.
"Don't insult me.""
"Daniel, I swear I didn't know anything about Emily's account.""
"Then explain why Vanessa says you're Gregory's business partner.""
Another pause.
"We were working on a property development project.""
"Using my house?""
"No. Not exactly.""
"Using sixty-two thousand dollars from Emily's trust?""
"I thought that was Vanessa's money.""
I looked across the kitchen.
Emily was sitting at the table, reviewing the transaction records. Ava sat beside her.
Vanessa had locked herself in the bedroom.
I lowered my voice.
"Michael, where did the money go?""
He exhaled.
"Gregory was supposed to use it as the initial capital for a commercial renovation project.""
"What renovation project?""
"A building in Charlotte. It needed work, but the location was good. We planned to renovate it and sell it.""
"And the house?""
"Vanessa wanted to contribute your property as additional collateral.""
I felt my blood run cold.
"She wanted to use my house to secure your business loan?""
"Daniel, the property was supposed to be sold. Nobody was trying to take it from you.""
"Without my permission?""
Michael didn't answer.
I walked toward the window.
"How much money have you received?""
"Nothing.""
"Michael.""
"All right. I received a payment.""
"How much?""
"Twenty thousand.""
I stared at the driveway, where Ava's Mustang still sat beneath the fading birthday decorations.
"Twenty thousand dollars?""
"It was a consulting fee.""
"For what?""
"Helping Gregory negotiate the purchase.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You helped him negotiate a purchase using money stolen from my daughter.""
"I didn't know where the money came from!""
"Then give it back.""
Michael's voice hardened.
"I can't.""
"Why?""
"Because I used it.""
"For what?""
He hesitated.
"Creditors.""
I leaned against the wall.
"What creditors?""
Michael finally admitted that his own construction company had been struggling for nearly a year.
He had accumulated unpaid supplier invoices, equipment debt, and personal loans.
Gregory had approached him with an opportunity to recover financially through the commercial property project.
Vanessa had introduced them.
I felt my stomach twist.
"So my wife knew about your debts?""
"Yes.""
"And she decided to pay them with Emily's education money?""
"She said she would replace it.""
"With what?""
Michael went silent.
I looked at the laptop.
"Michael, listen carefully. The bank has opened a fraud investigation. The attempted house-sale transfer has been flagged. There are forged documents with my name on them.""
He suddenly sounded nervous.
"Don't involve the police yet.""
I straightened.
"Why?""
"Because Gregory will disappear.""
"Where?""
Michael hesitated.
Then he said, "He's been preparing to leave the country.""
I felt my pulse accelerate.
"When?""
"I don't know exactly. But he's been talking about moving money overseas.""
"How do you know?""
"Because he asked me to help arrange the transfer.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Did you agree?""
"No.""
"Did you tell Vanessa?""
Another silence.
That was when I understood.
My brother had known more than he was admitting.
"Michael, I need the truth. All of it.""
He lowered his voice.
"Gregory told Vanessa that if the property deal went through, he could repay everybody. But the business is in worse shape than he admitted.""
"How bad?""
"He's behind on loans. There are contractors threatening legal action. Some of the money was already spent before the renovation even started.""
I stared at the kitchen wall.
"So there may be no investment.""
"Daniel, I think the whole thing is collapsing.""
I ended the call after telling Michael that I expected him to preserve every message, document, and payment record.
Emily looked up.
"Was Uncle Michael involved?""
I nodded.
Her eyes filled.
"Why would everybody do this to me?""
I sat beside her.
"I don't know, sweetheart.""
She looked down at her hands.
"Grandma always said that money wasn't just for college. She said it was supposed to give me choices. She didn't want me starting my adult life trapped in debt.""
I put my arm around her.
"She wanted you to have a future. And we're going to fight to protect it.""
Ava quietly joined us.
"I want the car returned.""
I looked at her.
"Are you sure?""
She nodded.
"I don't want to spend six years paying for something that came from my sister's stolen money.""
I squeezed her hand.
"All right. We'll contact the dealership.""
At that moment, Vanessa came downstairs.
Her eyes were swollen, but she had changed into a neat cream blouse and dark trousers.
She carried a folder.
"I want everyone to sit down.""
Nobody moved.
She placed the folder on the kitchen island.
"I have a way to fix this.""
I looked at her.
"How?""
She opened the folder.
Inside were several bank statements and a printed email from Gregory.
"He promised to return the money," she said.
"All of it.""
Emily stared at her.
"How?""
Vanessa pointed to the email.
"He's arranging a sale of the commercial property. Once it closes, he can repay the sixty-two thousand and the rest of the money.""
I read the email.
There was something suspicious about it.
The promised repayment date was three weeks away.
But beneath it, I noticed another sentence.
*The Carter family residence must remain available as collateral until all outstanding obligations are settled.*
I looked at Vanessa.
"Did you agree to this?""
She lowered her eyes.
"He said it was necessary.""
"You agreed to put our house up as collateral?""
"I was trying to save the investment!""
I pushed the email away.
"You weren't saving anything. You were risking everything.""
Vanessa suddenly started crying.
"I thought I was helping everybody.""
Emily stood.
"Except me.""
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
"Emily—"
"No. You didn't even ask me. You just decided my future was less important than everybody else's problems.""
Vanessa had no response.
I took the folder and placed it beside the laptop.
"We're going to see an attorney.""
She nodded weakly.
But before we could leave, my phone buzzed.
It was Michael.
He had sent a photograph of a document.
The message beneath it contained only six words.
*Daniel, you need to see who signed this.*
I opened the photograph.
It was a business agreement between Gregory and Michael.
But the third party listed as a financial guarantor wasn't Vanessa.
May you like
It was me.
And the agreement claimed I had personally guaranteed a $350,000 business loan.
