Chapter 8: The Enemy Wearing a Familiar Face
Daniel didn’t wait for anyone.
Not the police.
Not Michael.
Not Rebecca.
He grabbed his keys and ran.
The phone call lasted less than twenty seconds.
But it was enough.
Ethan was alive.
And Alex had him.
The location tracker on Ethan’s phone had been damaged, but Daniel managed to recover a signal from the last call.
An abandoned warehouse district outside the city.
A place Daniel knew well.
Too well.
Because fifteen years ago…
that was where everything began.
The old Carter Construction storage buildings.
The same place where the company’s financial records had disappeared.
The same place where Daniel’s life had started falling apart.
As he drove, memories flooded back.
Alex standing beside him.
Alex laughing.
Alex saying they would build something together.
Daniel had trusted him more than anyone.
And that trust had become the weapon used against him.
When Daniel arrived, the warehouse looked abandoned.
Rust covered the gates.
The windows were broken.
The entire place felt like a graveyard.
He entered slowly.
“Ethan!””
No answer.
Then he heard footsteps.
A voice.
“Still protecting everyone except yourself.””
Daniel stopped.
The voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
Alex stepped out of the darkness.
Older.
Different.
But alive.
For a moment, Daniel couldn’t speak.
The brothers stared at each other.
Fifteen years of anger.
Confusion.
Pain.
Everything between them.
“You’re alive.””
Alex smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
Daniel’s fists tightened.
“Where is my son?””
Alex looked behind him.
“He’s safe.””
“You kidnapped him.””
“I protected him.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe that?””
Alex sighed.
“You never listened to me.””
“Because you were always jealous.””
The smile disappeared from Alex’s face.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“That’s what you always believed.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You destroyed my life.””
Alex looked away.
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“You destroyed mine.””
Daniel stared.
“You think I stole your life?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
Alex walked closer.
“You were always the successful one.””
“You had a family.””
“You had respect.””
“You had everyone’s attention.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You could have built your own.””
Alex laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“I understand perfectly.””
“You wanted what I had.””
Alex’s eyes darkened.
“I wanted what I deserved.””
Then Ethan appeared.
“Dad!””
Daniel turned.
His son was standing behind Alex.
Alive.
Daniel moved immediately.
But Alex raised a hand.
“Don’t.””
Daniel stopped.
Ethan looked scared.
“Dad…”
“I’m here.””
Alex looked at Ethan.
“You know, your son is smarter than you.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Don’t talk about him.””
“He figured everything out.””
Alex smiled.
“That’s why he became dangerous.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Did he hurt you?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
Then he whispered:
“He wanted me to tell you something.””
Alex’s expression changed.
“What?””
Ethan looked at his uncle.
“You failed.””
The room became silent.
Alex stared.
Daniel looked surprised.
Ethan continued.
“You think Dad doesn’t know anything.””
The boy stepped forward.
“But he knows now.””
Alex’s face hardened.
“You have no idea what’s happening.””
Ethan looked at him.
“I know more than you think.””
Daniel realized something.
Ethan wasn’t just waiting to be rescued.
He had learned.
He had been gathering information.
Just like his father.
Alex noticed Daniel’s expression.
“He’s exactly like you.””
Daniel replied:
“No.””
He looked at Ethan.
“He’s better.””
For the first time, Alex looked uncertain.
Then he said:
“You want the truth?””
Daniel stared.
“Yes.””
Alex reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old document.
“This is why everything happened.””
Daniel took it.
It was a legal agreement.
Between Daniel and Alex.
A partnership agreement.
But there was something Daniel had never seen.
A hidden clause.
Daniel read it.
Then his face changed.
“What is this?””
Alex smiled.
“The truth.””
The document claimed that Daniel’s entire company would eventually belong to both brothers equally.
Daniel looked up.
“That was never signed.””
Alex leaned closer.
“It was.””
Daniel felt cold.
“By who?””
Alex answered:
“By your wife.””
Daniel froze.
“My wife?””
“Emily.””
The name hit him like a storm.
Alex continued.
“She knew.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“She knew about the agreement.””
“No.””
“She knew I was supposed to have half.””
Daniel stepped back.
“You’re lying.””
Alex’s face showed something unexpected.
Pain.
“You always thought everyone betrayed you.””
A pause.
“But you never asked why.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
The boy looked confused.
Because this was not the truth Daniel expected.
And that scared him.
Alex lowered his voice.
“Your wife didn’t leave you because of the scandal.””
Daniel felt his heart race.
“What are you saying?””
Alex looked directly at him.
“She left because she discovered what you did.””
Daniel went silent.
“What I did?””
The warehouse suddenly felt colder.
May you like
Alex whispered:
“Your whole life was built on a lie too.””
