Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
Daniel stared at Alex.
For a moment, nobody in the hidden basement room spoke.
The only sound was the faint clicking of the old audio recorder sitting on the table.
Your mother.
Alive.
The words should have been impossible.
But Daniel had already lived through too many impossible things.
His father had returned from the dead.
His brother had returned from the dead.
The woman he almost married had built an entire relationship on a lie.
At this point, Daniel no longer believed anything was impossible.
But this?
This hurt differently.
Because his mother was the first person he ever loved.
The first person who made him feel safe.
The first person who taught him that family mattered.
And now everyone was telling him that even she had secrets.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“My mother died.””
Alex looked at him.
“That’s what we were supposed to believe.””
Daniel turned toward Richard.
His father looked away.
That was the answer.
The silence was the answer.
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“How long?””
Nobody responded.
“How long have you known?””
Richard finally spoke.
“Years.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the pain had become too much.
“Years.””
He repeated the word.
“My entire family knew.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Daniel—”
“No.””
Daniel raised his hand.
“Don’t.””
His father stopped.
Daniel looked around the room.
Every person connected to his life was standing there.
Every person had hidden something.
Every person had made choices without him.
And somehow, every person claimed it was for his own good.
“I spent years thinking I was abandoned.””
His voice cracked.
“I thought my mother died.””
He looked at Richard.
“I thought my brother betrayed me.””
Then at Alex.
“I thought my wife left me because I failed her.””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“I thought you loved me.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
Daniel continued.
“And now I find out everyone knew something except me.””
Nobody answered.
Because there was nothing to say.
Then a sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Everyone froze.
Richard immediately looked toward the stairs.
“She’s here.””
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“Who?””
Nobody answered.
Slowly, footsteps moved down.
One step.
Then another.
Then a figure appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
An elderly woman.
Gray hair.
A walking cane.
A face Daniel had not seen in decades.
But one he recognized instantly.
“Mom?””
The word left his mouth before he could stop it.
The woman looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Daniel.””
Everything inside him broke.
For a moment, he was not a businessman.
Not a father.
Not a man betrayed by everyone around him.
He was just a son.
A little boy who had spent years missing his mother.
He wanted to run to her.
He wanted to hug her.
But his feet wouldn’t move.
Because love and anger were fighting inside him.
“You’re alive.””
His mother nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The question came out quietly.
But it carried twenty years of pain.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?””
She looked down.
“Because I thought it was the only way to protect you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Again.
That word.
Protect.
Everyone used it.
Everyone hurt him with it.
“I don’t want protection anymore.””
His mother looked at him.
“I know.””
“Then I want the truth.””
She nodded.
“You deserve it.””
She walked into the room slowly.
Her name was Elizabeth Carter.
And she had been carrying the heaviest secret of all.
She looked at Alex.
“You did what I asked.””
Alex nodded.
Daniel noticed.
“You two were working together.””
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Yes.””
Daniel felt betrayed again.
“Of course.””
She reached for his hand.
“Daniel, listen.””
He hesitated.
But he allowed her to continue.
“Your father wanted to build an empire.””
She looked at Richard.
“Your brother wanted justice.””
She looked at Alex.
“And you wanted everyone to be happy.””
Daniel said nothing.
“That was your weakness.””
The words surprised him.
“My weakness?””
“Yes.””
Elizabeth’s eyes softened.
“You always believed if you loved people enough, they would never hurt you.””
Daniel looked away.
Because that was true.
Elizabeth continued.
“When your father changed the inheritance documents, I discovered it.””
Richard lowered his head.
“I was angry.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You should have been.””
Elizabeth continued.
“But I also knew exposing him would destroy the family completely.””
Daniel frowned.
“So you disappeared?””
“I created distance.””
She looked at him.
“I wanted time.””
“For what?””
“To find the person who was manipulating everyone.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who?””
Elizabeth’s expression became serious.
“Someone inside our company.””
A cold feeling moved through him.
“Who?””
Before she could answer, the lights flickered.
Everyone looked up.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“You finally found her.””
Daniel froze.
“Who is this?””
A laugh.
“You’ve spent years searching for enemies.””
The voice became colder.
“But you never looked at the person standing beside you.””
Daniel looked around the room.
Everyone became tense.
The voice continued.
“Ask your mother what happened the night she disappeared.””
Daniel looked at Elizabeth.
She went pale.
The caller continued.
“Ask her who helped her fake her death.””
Silence.
Then the call ended.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
Everyone looked at Elizabeth.
Because her expression had changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“Mom?””
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
And whispered:
“There is someone else.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Who?””
She looked at him.
“The person who helped me disappear…”
A pause.
“Was Emily.””
Daniel felt the ground disappear again.
His dead wife.
His mother.
His brother.
His father.
May you like
Everyone connected.
And the truth was still getting darker.
