Chapter 2: The Secret Ethan Was Forced to Carry
Nobody moved.
The wedding guests stood frozen between confusion and disbelief.
A few seconds earlier, they had been celebrating a marriage.
Now they were watching a man discover that his entire future had been built on a lie.
Daniel held the phone tightly.
His hands were shaking.
Not because of embarrassment.
Not because hundreds of people had witnessed his humiliation.
Because he was trying to understand one thing.
How long had this been happening?
How long had Vanessa been pretending?
Vanessa looked around the garden.
The confident woman who had walked down the aisle minutes earlier was gone.
Now she looked desperate.
“Daniel, please.””
Her voice cracked.
“Let me explain.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Explain what?””
Nobody answered.
“You were never pregnant?””
Vanessa looked away.
That silence was enough.
A wave of anger moved through Daniel’s body.
But beneath the anger was something worse.
Pain.
Because the fake pregnancy wasn’t the thing that hurt him most.
It was realizing Ethan had known.
His own son had been carrying this secret alone.
Daniel turned toward the boy.
“Ethan.””
The boy looked up.
Tears were forming in his eyes.
“Dad…”
“How long?””
Ethan swallowed.
“How long did you know?””
The boy looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Daniel.
“Three weeks.””
Daniel felt like someone had punched him.
“Three weeks?””
“I tried to tell you.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Every conversation came rushing back.
Every warning.
Every strange look.
Every moment when Ethan had tried to get his attention.
And every time, Daniel had chosen to believe Vanessa.
“Why didn’t you tell me everything?””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Because she knew.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What?””
The boy stepped closer.
“She knew I was suspicious.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That’s ridiculous.””
But Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
His voice became stronger.
“She knew.””
The guests watched silently.
Daniel looked at his son.
“What happened?””
Ethan took a deep breath.
Then he explained.
Three weeks earlier, he had come home early from school.
He had gone upstairs looking for his father.
Instead, he heard Vanessa talking on the phone.
At first, he thought nothing of it.
Until he heard his name.
“I heard her say I was becoming a problem.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Ethan continued.
“She said I was watching her too closely.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Ethan, you misunderstood.””
The boy looked at her.
“No, I didn’t.””
Daniel felt a cold anger rising.
“Keep going.””
Ethan nodded.
“That night, I saw her take the pregnancy thing out of a box.””
The guests gasped.
Vanessa looked furious.
“You were spying on me?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I was looking for Dad.””
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
She didn’t answer.
And that was the answer.
Ethan continued.
“I saw the fake belly.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
The image of Vanessa standing in front of him every day suddenly felt different.
The hugs.
The promises.
The conversations about their future.
All fake.
But Ethan wasn’t finished.
“The worst part wasn’t the belly.””
Daniel looked at him.
“What was?””
Ethan’s voice became quiet.
“She called someone.””
The garden became still again.
“She said she needed more time because you were planning the wedding.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“Who?””
Ethan shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Daniel, you cannot believe a child over me.””
The words immediately changed the atmosphere.
Everyone noticed.
Including Daniel.
Because Vanessa didn’t say:
“Your son is mistaken.””
She said:
“You cannot believe a child over me.””
As if Ethan was an opponent.
As if this was a battle.
Daniel stared at her.
“You told him not to tell me.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
She had no answer.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Scared that I would find out?””
Vanessa looked down.
The priest quietly stepped away.
The guests began leaving slowly.
The beautiful wedding scene disappeared piece by piece.
The flowers remained.
The decorations remained.
But the happiness was gone.
Then Ethan grabbed Daniel’s hand.
“Dad.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
Those two words broke something inside Daniel.
Because Ethan wasn’t asking for forgiveness.
He was apologizing for being right.
Daniel knelt in front of him.
“You don’t have to apologize.””
“But I didn’t stop her.””
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?””
The boy looked terrified.
“There’s more.””
Daniel’s heart sank.
“What else?””
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
“She wasn’t only hiding the pregnancy.””
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“Ethan, stop.””
The boy flinched.
Daniel noticed.
And that was when something inside him finally snapped.
He stood up.
“Don’t talk to my son like that.””
Vanessa became silent.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“What else did you find?””
The boy slowly pulled out another item from his pocket.
A small memory card.
“I found this in her room.””
Vanessa turned pale.
“Give me that.””
She moved forward.
Daniel stepped between them.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
But dangerous.
“What is on it?””
Ethan looked at his father.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel took the memory card.
The entire garden waited.
He knew whatever was on it would change everything.
Again.
Because the fake pregnancy was only the first lie.
And somewhere inside that tiny piece of plastic was the truth Vanessa had been desperate to hide.
Daniel looked at the crowd.
Then at the woman who had almost become his wife.
And he realized something terrifying.
The wedding had not been the beginning of Vanessa’s plan.
It had been the final step.
The last moment before she got exactly what she wanted.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Come with me.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel…”
He didn’t turn around.
May you like
Because for the first time since meeting her…
he was afraid of what he would discover.
