Chapter 4: The Ghost From Daniel’s Past
Daniel stared at the photograph in his hand.
For several seconds, his mind refused to process what he was seeing.
The picture was old.
The edges were worn.
The colors had faded.
But there was no mistake.
The woman standing beside Vanessa was someone Daniel knew.
Someone he had buried in his memory years ago.
Someone who was supposed to be impossible to find.
His fingers tightened around the photograph.
“Dad?””
Ethan’s voice pulled him back.
Daniel looked at his son.
The fear in Ethan’s eyes reminded him that this was no longer about his broken heart.
This was about protecting his family.
“What’s wrong?”” Ethan asked.
Daniel slowly turned the photograph around.
The image showed Vanessa standing beside a woman in her late fifties.
The two of them were smiling.
Behind them was a building Daniel recognized immediately.
His old office.
The one he owned fifteen years earlier.
Before everything changed.
Before the accident.
Before his first marriage nearly collapsed under the pressure of his work.
Before he rebuilt his life.
Daniel whispered one name.
“Rebecca.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Who is Rebecca?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Because saying her name out loud made the past feel real again.
Rebecca Hayes.
She had been his business partner.
His closest friend.
And the person who betrayed him.
Fifteen years ago, Daniel and Rebecca built Carter Construction together.
They were unstoppable.
Daniel handled the projects.
Rebecca handled finances.
Together, they turned a small company into one of the fastest-growing construction firms in the city.
They trusted each other completely.
Until one day, millions of dollars disappeared.
Money was transferred from company accounts.
Contracts were altered.
Documents were forged.
And all evidence pointed toward Daniel.
He remembered the humiliation.
The accusations.
The headlines.
Everyone believed he had stolen from his own company.
But Rebecca disappeared before she could testify.
Daniel spent years clearing his name.
He lost investors.
He lost friendships.
And most painfully…
he lost the person he was back then.
His wife, Emily, had stood beside him through everything.
But the stress destroyed them.
Their marriage never recovered.
Not completely.
And years later, when Emily died, Daniel convinced himself that pain was simply something he had to accept.
But now Rebecca was back.
And she was connected to Vanessa.
Daniel walked toward the desk.
“What was she doing with Vanessa?””
Ethan looked at the picture.
“Maybe she’s helping her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
His son looked at him.
“You don’t believe that?””
Daniel stared at Rebecca’s face.
“I believe she’s the reason.””
Before Ethan could ask more, Daniel heard something outside.
A car door.
He immediately turned.
The front window showed headlights moving away from the driveway.
Someone had been watching the house.
Daniel ran outside.
But by the time he reached the road, the vehicle was gone.
Only tire marks remained.
He returned inside.
Ethan was waiting.
“Was it her?””
Daniel locked the door.
“I don’t know.””
But deep down, he knew.
This wasn’t over.
The next morning, Daniel made a decision.
He couldn’t investigate alone.
He needed someone he trusted.
Someone who knew the truth about the past.
His old attorney.
Michael Reed.
Michael had helped Daniel survive the scandal fifteen years earlier.
When Daniel arrived at his office, Michael immediately noticed something was wrong.
“You look like you haven’t slept.””
Daniel placed the photograph on the desk.
Michael picked it up.
The moment he saw Rebecca, his expression changed.
“No.””
Daniel watched him carefully.
“You know something.””
Michael stayed silent.
“Michael.””
The older man sighed.
“I hoped you would never see this.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“What does that mean?””
Michael sat down.
“Rebecca never disappeared.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“She changed her name.””
“Why?””
Michael looked at the photograph.
“Because she wasn’t running away.””
A long silence followed.
“She was planning.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
“Planning what?””
Michael opened a drawer and pulled out an old file.
“I found this years ago.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“What is it?””
“Records.””
Michael opened it.
Inside were documents showing Rebecca had been tracking Daniel’s business activities long after leaving.
“She knew about your investments. Your properties. Your insurance policies.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
Michael looked at him.
“Because she always believed she deserved what you built.””
The words hit harder than Daniel expected.
Rebecca hadn’t just betrayed him.
She had been waiting.
Waiting for the right moment.
Then Daniel remembered Vanessa’s words from the recording.
“After the wedding, we’ll figure out what to do about the rest.””
The rest.
What rest?
Michael suddenly looked serious.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
Michael hesitated.
“Rebecca wasn’t the only person involved.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Who else?””
Michael looked away.
“Your brother.””
Daniel went completely still.
“My brother?””
“Yes.””
Daniel laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was impossible.
His younger brother, Alex, had died ten years ago.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
Michael saw the confusion on his face.
“Daniel…”
“What are you saying?””
Michael opened another file.
Inside was a document.
A death certificate.
But attached to it was something else.
A photograph.
A recent photograph.
Daniel picked it up.
And his hands began to shake.
Because the man in the picture looked exactly like Alex.
Alive.
Standing beside Rebecca.
Daniel stared at the image.
His entire past was breaking apart.
The people he lost.
The people he trusted.
The people he buried.
None of them were what they seemed.
Michael lowered his voice.
May you like
“Daniel, I think your brother is alive.””
And suddenly, the fake pregnancy seemed like the smallest part of the nightmare.
