Chapter 10: The Message From the Woman He Lost
Daniel had spent years imagining what it would feel like to hear Emily’s voice again.
Sometimes, when the house was quiet, he would remember the way she laughed.
The way she called him stubborn.
The way she always knew when he was hiding stress behind a fake smile.
He had kept every memory of her carefully protected.
Emily was the one person he believed had never betrayed him.
And now Vanessa was standing in front of him, claiming Emily had left behind a secret.
A secret that could destroy everything Daniel believed about his own life.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel said the words, but even he could hear the uncertainty in his voice.
Vanessa smiled.
“I knew you would say that.””
“Because it’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
She looked toward Alex.
“Ask him.””
Daniel turned.
Alex looked away.
And that was enough.
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“You knew.””
Alex didn’t answer.
“You knew about Emily?””
Still nothing.
Daniel’s anger exploded.
“You knew and you said nothing?””
Alex finally looked at him.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He pointed around the warehouse.
“Everyone says they’re protecting me while destroying my life.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You still don’t understand what happened.””
“Then explain.””
She walked slowly toward him.
“Your wife discovered something fifteen years ago.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“She discovered that the company scandal wasn’t what you thought.””
Daniel looked at Alex.
“Rebecca betrayed me.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The word landed heavily.
“Rebecca was trying to stop something.””
Daniel froze.
The warehouse became silent.
Even Alex looked uncomfortable.
Daniel whispered:
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
She held it out.
“Emily left this.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“Why do you have it?””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Because I was hired to find it.””
A chill moved through him.
“By who?””
Vanessa looked at Alex.
Then back at Daniel.
“By the person who started all of this.””
Daniel grabbed the envelope.
His hands shook.
Inside was a letter.
Emily’s handwriting.
The moment he saw it, his heart broke.
Because he knew that handwriting.
He had seen it on grocery lists.
Birthday cards.
Notes left on the kitchen counter.
It was real.
He opened it.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, it means someone finally forced you to look at the truth.*
Daniel stopped.
His breathing became uneven.
*I wanted to tell you everything. I tried. But I was afraid of what would happen if I did.*
He continued.
*You believe you lost everything because people betrayed you. But the truth is more complicated.*
Daniel’s eyes moved faster.
*The company scandal was not caused by Rebecca alone. It began because of a decision you made years earlier.*
His hands froze.
A decision?
*Daniel, you trusted the wrong person. You trusted Alex with information he should never have had.*
Daniel looked at his brother.
Alex looked down.
*Alex did not steal from you because he hated you. He stole because someone convinced him you were his enemy.*
Daniel frowned.
Someone?
*There is a person who has manipulated both of you for years.*
Daniel felt his heartbeat increase.
*A person who benefits from your hatred.*
The letter continued.
*I found evidence. I planned to expose everything. But before I could, I became sick.*
Daniel swallowed.
Emily had known.
She had known something was coming.
*I need you to understand one thing. I never left because I stopped loving you.*
Daniel closed his eyes.
A tear fell.
*I left because I discovered the truth about the people around us, and I knew staying near you would put you in danger.*
The final lines were harder to read.
*Protect Ethan. He is the only innocent person in this story.*
*And Daniel… forgive yourself. You were never the villain they wanted you to believe you were.*
The letter ended.
Daniel lowered it slowly.
For years, he had carried guilt.
Guilt over the company.
Guilt over Emily.
Guilt over everything he couldn’t fix.
But now he didn’t know what was real anymore.
“Who wrote the letter?””
Vanessa answered quietly.
“Emily.””
“When?””
“Two months before she died.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew her?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Yes.””
The answer shocked him.
“How?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I worked for her.””
Daniel stared.
“What?””
“I was her assistant.””
The room became completely still.
Daniel looked at Vanessa like he was seeing her for the first time.
“You knew Emily before you met me.””
“Yes.””
“And you still came into my life.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I was trying to finish what she started.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You weren’t helping her.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“You were using her.””
A flash of guilt crossed her face.
Just for a second.
Then it disappeared.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“You almost destroyed my son’s life.””
Vanessa became quiet.
Then Alex spoke.
“She’s right about one thing.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Alex looked serious.
“The person behind this is not Vanessa.””
“Then who?””
Before Alex could answer, the warehouse lights suddenly shut off.
Everyone froze.
A second later—
A loud crash.
Glass shattered.
Men shouted.
Chaos exploded.
Daniel grabbed Ethan.
“Stay close.””
Dark figures moved through the warehouse.
Someone attacked the guards.
Someone knew exactly where everyone was standing.
And then Daniel heard a voice.
A voice he had not heard in fifteen years.
A voice from the past.
“You all wasted so much time blaming each other.””
The lights turned back on.
A man stood above them.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Daniel stared.
Because he recognized him.
The man everyone thought was dead.
The man who had disappeared.
The man who was supposedly the beginning of everything.
But it wasn’t Alex.
It wasn’t Rebecca.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It was someone Daniel never expected.
Someone from his own family.
“Dad?””
Daniel whispered.
May you like
The man smiled.
“Hello, son.””
