Chapter 11: The Father Who Never Died
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
The world seemed to stop.
His father.
Richard Carter.
A man who had been buried twelve years earlier.
A man whose funeral Daniel attended.
A man whose death certificate existed.
Standing alive in front of him.
Daniel stared.
“No.””
Richard smiled sadly.
“You always hated surprises.””
Daniel took a step back.
“You’re dead.””
Richard looked around.
“Apparently not.””
Ethan moved closer to Daniel.
“Dad…”
Daniel immediately placed himself in front of his son.
Protective.
Ready.
Because whatever was happening, he knew one thing.
This family had too many secrets.
Richard noticed.
“Still protecting everyone.””
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“Where have you been?””
Richard didn’t answer.
“Why did you disappear?””
Silence.
“Why did you let me believe you were dead?””
Richard looked at Alex.
Then Rebecca.
Then Vanessa.
Finally Daniel.
“Because I needed everyone to believe the story.””
Daniel felt anger rising.
“What story?””
Richard walked closer.
“The story that I was gone.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You ruined our lives.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“No.””
His voice became harder.
“I saved them.””
Daniel almost laughed.
“Saved?””
“You think this was about money.””
Richard looked around.
“You think Alex wanted your company.””
Daniel glanced at his brother.
“You’re saying he didn’t?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what was this about?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“You.””
The answer stunned him.
“Me?””
“Yes.””
Richard walked slowly.
“Everything happened because of you.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You sound exactly like Alex.””
Richard smiled.
“Because Alex finally understood.””
Daniel looked at his brother.
“What does that mean?””
Alex remained silent.
Richard continued.
“You built a life believing you were the good son.””
Daniel said nothing.
“You were the responsible one. The successful one. The favorite.””
Richard’s words cut.
Daniel remembered childhood.
The comparisons.
The pressure.
The expectations.
But he never thought his family hated him for it.
“You think I wanted that?””
Richard laughed.
“No.””
“You wanted everyone to love you.””
Daniel stared.
“And that’s what made you dangerous.””
The words were confusing.
Dangerous?
Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out a folder.
“Read it.””
Daniel didn’t move.
“Read it.””
Slowly, Daniel took it.
Inside were old documents.
Financial records.
Emails.
Contracts.
His own signature.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“No.””
Richard watched him.
“You finally see it.””
Daniel looked through the pages.
The evidence showed decisions made fifteen years ago.
Decisions that had harmed investors.
Destroyed partnerships.
Created the scandal.
But Daniel didn’t remember signing them.
“I didn’t do this.””
Richard’s expression was unreadable.
“That’s what you told yourself.””
Daniel looked up.
“I was manipulated.””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
Richard smiled.
“By everyone.””
The answer made no sense.
Until Daniel saw one final page.
A transfer agreement.
A hidden ownership document.
And at the bottom…
Emily’s signature.
Daniel felt like the ground disappeared.
“No.””
Richard spoke quietly.
“She knew.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
“She knew the truth.””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
His son looked terrified.
Richard continued.
“She discovered that you had unknowingly helped create the situation.””
Daniel stared.
“What are you saying?””
“You trusted Alex.””
“Yes.””
“You trusted Rebecca.””
“Yes.””
“You trusted me.””
Daniel went silent.
Richard stepped closer.
“And that trust allowed everyone to move pieces around you.””
Daniel felt sick.
He had spent years thinking he was betrayed by people.
But now he was realizing something worse.
He had been surrounded by people who understood him better than he understood himself.
Then Ethan spoke.
“You’re lying.””
Everyone turned.
Richard looked at him.
The boy stepped forward.
“My dad isn’t perfect.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“But he’s not what you’re saying.””
Richard smiled.
“You’re brave.””
Ethan continued.
“He admitted when he was wrong.””
The boy looked at Daniel.
“He apologized.””
Then he looked back at Richard.
“People who are guilty don’t do that.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Daniel felt something he hadn’t felt all day.
Pride.
His son was afraid.
But he stood anyway.
Richard stared at Ethan.
Then slowly smiled.
“That’s exactly why he had to be removed.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What?””
Richard looked at him.
“Your son was becoming the only person who could expose everything.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You touch him again—”
Richard interrupted.
“Then what?””
A pause.
“You’ll do what?””
Daniel stopped.
Because Richard was right about one thing.
Daniel had spent his whole life fighting battles with logic.
But this was no longer business.
This was family.
And family had always been his weakness.
Then Rebecca suddenly spoke.
“Richard.””
Everyone turned.
She looked furious.
“You promised nobody would get hurt.””
Richard smiled.
“I promised nothing.””
Rebecca’s face changed.
And Daniel noticed.
She wasn’t afraid of Alex.
She wasn’t afraid of Vanessa.
She was afraid of Richard.
That was when Daniel finally understood.
All these years…
everyone had been pieces on a board.
Except one person.
The person moving them.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Come with me.””
Daniel stared.
“Why?””
Richard smiled.
“Because there’s something you need to see.””
“What?””
Richard answered:
“The truth about your mother.””
Daniel froze.
Because his mother was the one mystery nobody had ever questioned.
She had died when he was young.
A simple illness.
A painful memory.
But now…
May you like
another dead person had returned.
And Richard was saying there was another secret.
