Chapter 3: The Woman Behind the Mask

Daniel had imagined his wedding day many times.

He imagined holding Vanessa’s hand.

He imagined Ethan smiling.

He imagined hearing people congratulate them.

He never imagined walking away from the altar with a memory card in his pocket and a thousand questions burning in his mind.

The house was silent when they returned.

The same house where Vanessa had spent months pretending to belong.

Daniel stood in the living room.

Ethan sat on the couch.

Neither of them spoke.

Finally, Daniel looked at his son.

“I need you to tell me everything.””

Ethan nodded.

“I tried.””

“I know.””

Daniel sat beside him.

“I should have listened.””

The boy looked surprised.

Daniel rarely admitted mistakes.

But today, he had learned something important.

Being a father wasn’t about always being right.

It was about being willing to admit when he was wrong.

“I’m sorry, Ethan.””

The boy looked down.

“I just didn’t want you to get hurt.””

Daniel swallowed.

Those words hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.

Because his son had been protecting him.

While he was protecting the woman who was hurting them.

Daniel inserted the memory card into his computer.

A folder appeared.

Only one file.

A video.

The date was from five days earlier.

Daniel clicked play.

At first, the screen showed Vanessa sitting in the same hotel room from the previous recording.

But this time, the mysterious man was closer.

Daniel leaned forward.

The man said:

“Are you sure he won’t investigate?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Daniel trusts me.””

The confidence in her voice made Daniel sick.

The man laughed.

“That’s why this works.””

Daniel felt his fists tighten.

Vanessa continued.

“Once we’re married, everything changes.””

The man asked:

“And the money?””

Daniel froze.

Money?

Vanessa looked toward the camera.

“I’ll handle Daniel.””

The video stopped.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Ethan whispered:

“Dad…”

Daniel didn’t answer.

His mind was racing.

This wasn’t about love.

This wasn’t about a baby.

This was a plan.

A carefully designed plan.

But what was the goal?

His money?

His house?

His company?

Daniel had spent twenty years building his construction business from nothing.

He knew people could become greedy.

But he never believed someone could fake an entire relationship.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

A man’s voice came through.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“You don’t know me.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“But I know Vanessa.””

Daniel stood.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Marcus.””

Daniel’s face changed.

The mysterious man.

The voice from the recording.

“You were at my wedding.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“No. I was supposed to be.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

The man became serious.

“Daniel, you need to leave that house.””

Daniel looked around.

“What?””

“Right now.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Marcus said:

“Because Vanessa was never trying to marry you.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Then what was she trying to do?””

The answer came softly.

“She was trying to get access.””

“To what?””

“Everything.””

The call ended.

Daniel stared at the phone.

Ethan looked worried.

“Dad?””

Daniel slowly turned.

“Get your jacket.””

“Where are we going?””

Daniel looked toward the front door.

“Somewhere safe.””

But before they could move, they heard something.

A sound from upstairs.

A door closing.

Daniel froze.

Because nobody else should have been in the house.

He slowly walked toward the stairs.

Ethan grabbed his arm.

“Dad.””

Daniel whispered:

“Stay behind me.””

They moved quietly.

Step by step.

The house that once felt like home suddenly felt like a trap.

At the top of the stairs, Daniel saw the bedroom door slightly open.

His bedroom.

The room where Vanessa had slept.

The room where she had hidden her secrets.

Daniel pushed the door open.

Empty.

But the closet was open.

And inside was something he had never seen before.

A suitcase.

Not Vanessa’s suitcase.

Someone else’s.

Daniel opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photos.

And a file with his name written across it.

Daniel picked it up.

The first page made his blood run cold.

Because it wasn’t a love plan.

It wasn’t a wedding plan.

It was an investigation.

About him.

About his company.

About his family.

About Ethan.

Daniel looked at his son.

And for the first time, he understood.

The fake pregnancy was never the biggest lie.

It was only the first layer.

Someone had been studying his life.

Planning his future.

And using the woman he loved as the weapon.

Then Ethan noticed something hidden beneath the papers.

A photograph.

He picked it up.

His face changed.

“Dad…”

Daniel took the picture.

And his entire world stopped.

Because standing beside Vanessa in the photograph…

was someone Daniel knew.

Someone from his past.

Someone he thought was gone forever.

And underneath the photo was a handwritten note:

*“Phase two begins after the wedding.””*
