Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed
Nobody moved.
The words hung in the air.
The night Evelyn died.
For years, that night had been the most painful memory in Anthony’s life.
The hospital room.
The machines.
The goodbye.
He had never questioned it.
Why would he?
His wife was sick.
Doctors explained everything.
There was no reason to look deeper.
But now, after everything they had discovered, one question remained.
What did Monica know?
Anthony held the phone tightly.
“Daniel.””
“Yes.””
“Tell me everything.””
The lawyer sounded terrified.
“I can’t talk over the phone.””
“Then come here.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
A long silence.
Then Daniel answered:
“Because someone is following me.””
The call ended.
Anthony immediately called back.
No answer.
Layla looked at him.
“Dad…”
Anthony stared at the phone.
“I should have known.””
Michael shook his head.
“No.””
Anthony looked at him.
“I should have protected Evelyn.””
“You loved her.””
“I trusted everyone around me.””
Michael’s voice softened.
“That was never your weakness.””
But Anthony didn’t respond.
Because guilt had already returned.
The same guilt he carried since the day Evelyn died.
That evening, they found Daniel.
Not at the house.
Not at his office.
At an old parking garage downtown.
Anthony, Layla, and Michael arrived with Rachel.
Daniel was waiting beside his car.
He looked exhausted.
Older than he had a few days before.
“I’m sorry.””
Anthony stared.
“Start talking.””
Daniel looked around.
“She hired me.””
“Monica?””
He nodded.
“Before she married you.””
Layla felt her stomach twist.
“She planned everything.””
Daniel swallowed.
“At first, she only wanted information.””
“What information?””
“Evelyn’s trust.””
Anthony stepped closer.
“You helped her?””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I thought she only wanted financial advice.””
“Then?””
“Then she asked about ways to challenge the inheritance.””
Layla stared.
“She wanted to take my mother’s money.””
Daniel nodded.
“But she couldn’t.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn was smarter.””
He handed Anthony a folder.
“She changed everything before she died.””
Anthony opened it.
Inside was a final legal amendment.
A protection clause.
Layla could not lose her inheritance.
Not through marriage.
Not through manipulation.
Not through court battles.
Evelyn had thought of everything.
Then Daniel said:
“But Monica found out.””
“How?””
“Because someone told her.””
Everyone looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at Michael.
Then Anthony.
Finally, he said:
“Evelyn’s doctor.””
The silence was immediate.
Rachel whispered:
“No.””
Daniel nodded.
“The doctor was paid to delay certain information.””
Anthony’s face turned pale.
“Are you saying someone interfered with Evelyn’s treatment?””
Daniel looked away.
“I don’t know.””
But his fear said enough.
Suddenly, a car engine roared nearby.
A vehicle sped toward them.
“Move!””
Michael pushed Layla aside.
The car crashed into Daniel’s vehicle.
The sound echoed through the garage.
Everyone froze.
Then the car reversed.
The driver looked directly at them.
And for one second, Layla saw the face behind the window.
Monica.
She wasn’t running.
She wasn’t hiding.
She was sending a message.
The car disappeared into the darkness.
Anthony stood there, staring after it.
Because now he knew.
Monica wasn’t trying to escape.
She was fighting back.
And she was willing to destroy anyone who got in her way.
Layla picked up the folder Daniel dropped.
Inside was one final document.
A document Evelyn had hidden.
At the top were four words:
“Proof of the betrayal.””
And underneath was a name.
Not Monica.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
Someone nobody had suspected.
Anthony read the name.
And his face changed.
May you like
Because the person who betrayed Evelyn…
Was someone they had loved their entire lives.
