Chapter 10: The Name Written in Evelyn’s Final Warning

Anthony stared at the document in his hands.

For several seconds, he didn’t breathe.

He didn’t blink.

He simply stared at the name written across the page as if refusing to accept the letters in front of him.

Layla noticed immediately.

“Dad?””

Anthony folded the paper slightly.

Not enough to hide it.

Just enough to protect himself from seeing it again.

“What is it?””

He looked at Michael.

Then Rachel.

Then finally Layla.

The pain in his eyes answered before his words did.

“It’s someone we know.””

Layla stepped closer.

“Who?””

Anthony closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“My father.””

Nobody spoke.

The parking garage suddenly felt colder.

Michael looked confused.

“Your father?””

Anthony nodded slowly.

“My father’s name is on this document.””

Rachel looked shocked.

“But your father has been dead for years.””

“I know.””

Daniel looked between them.

“That’s impossible.””

Anthony read the document again.

The handwriting was Evelyn’s.

The information was real.

But the conclusion made no sense.

The document explained that years earlier, before Evelyn became sick, she discovered unusual transfers connected to the Carter family assets.

The transactions were approved through a series of old accounts.

Accounts that belonged to people who no longer had access.

Except one.

Anthony’s father.

The man who had controlled the family business before Anthony.

The man who had taught both Anthony and Michael everything they knew.

The man they had respected.

The man they buried.

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

Anthony looked at him.

“You believe it?””

“I don’t know what I believe.””

For the first time, Michael looked genuinely lost.

“My entire life, I thought Dad chose you over me.””

Anthony looked away.

“Michael…”

“But now you’re telling me he was hiding things from both of us?””

Rachel quietly opened another folder.

“There’s more.””

Everyone turned.

Rachel removed several pages.

“These were copies Evelyn sent me before she died.””

Anthony took them.

The first page was a list of dates.

The second page showed payments.

The third page contained a note.

Anthony read it aloud.

“‘The person responsible is not acting alone.’”

Layla felt a chill.

Not alone.

That meant Monica.

Daniel.

And possibly someone else.

Someone who had been planning this for years.

Anthony looked at Daniel.

“When did Monica first contact you?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Three years ago.””

The same year Monica entered their lives.

Layla’s stomach tightened.

“That wasn’t a coincidence.””

“No,” Anthony said.

“It wasn’t.””

Everything suddenly became clear.

Monica didn’t just marry Anthony.

She inserted herself into the family.

She learned about Layla.

She learned about Evelyn.

She learned about the inheritance.

But there was still one question.

Who introduced Monica to them?

Anthony looked at Michael.

“You said she knew about the inheritance before she met me.””

Michael nodded.

“She did.””

“How?””

Michael hesitated.

Then answered:

“Because someone gave her information.””

Anthony’s expression darkened.

“Who?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“I think you already know.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then Layla understood.

“No.””

Anthony shook his head.

“Don’t.””

Michael looked at him.

“You need to hear it.””

“Who?””

Michael sighed.

“Dad.””

Anthony stepped back.

“No.””

“Anthony—”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“My father died before Monica met us.””

Michael nodded.

“But the information could have been passed down.””

Layla looked at the documents.

The truth was becoming bigger.

More painful.

More impossible to ignore.

Then Daniel suddenly spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked terrified.

“When Monica hired me, she wasn’t looking for the trust documents first.””

“What was she looking for?””

Daniel hesitated.

“A recording.””

Anthony frowned.

“What recording?””

Daniel looked at Layla.

“Your mother made a video.””

“We saw one.””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“The one you saw was a message.””

He lowered his voice.

“The real recording was something else.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“Evelyn’s confession.””

Anthony froze.

“She recorded something?””

Daniel nodded.

“She said if anything happened to her, the truth needed to survive.””

Layla felt her heart racing.

“Where is it?””

Nobody answered.

Because that was the question.

The one everyone feared.

Then Anthony’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

He opened it.

A picture appeared.

A video file.

And one sentence:

“Your wife wanted you to know the truth. Now you will.””

Anthony pressed play.

The screen showed Evelyn.

But this time, she wasn’t sitting calmly.

She looked frightened.

“Anthony, if you’re watching this, then I failed.””

Layla grabbed her father’s arm.

Her mother continued.

“I need you to understand something. The person who betrayed me is not someone I suspected.””

Evelyn looked directly into the camera.

“It is someone I trusted completely.””

The video cut.

Before ending, one final image appeared.

A person standing behind Evelyn.

Only a shadow.

But recognizable enough.

Anthony dropped the phone.

Because he knew that silhouette.

Everyone did.

It belonged to someone who was still alive.

May you like

Someone who had been pretending to help them.

Someone who had been there from the beginning.
