Chapter 7: The File Hidden Behind Evelyn’s Last Promise
Anthony did not open the envelope immediately.
That scared Layla more than anything else.
Her father had always been the person who faced problems head-on. When she was younger and afraid of thunderstorms, he would sit beside her until the storm passed. When she struggled at school, he never let her quit. When she lost her mother, he promised her that no matter what happened, she would never be alone.
But now he was standing in the middle of the room, holding a letter from Evelyn, and he looked like a man afraid of what he might find.
Michael watched him carefully.
“You should read it.””
Anthony looked at his brother.
“You seem very interested in what’s inside.””
Michael smiled faintly.
“Because I already know some of it.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
Michael stepped closer.
“Anthony, you spent years believing Evelyn’s death was just tragedy. You never asked why she started locking files away. You never asked why she stopped trusting certain people.””
Anthony’s jaw tightened.
“You disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Right when everything fell apart.””
Michael looked away.
For the first time, there was something in his expression besides confidence.
Regret.
“Because I was scared.””
Nobody expected that answer.
Especially Anthony.
“You were scared?””
Michael nodded.
“I found something I shouldn’t have found.””
Layla looked between the two brothers.
“What did you find?””
Michael looked at her.
“The reason your mother created that trust.””
The room became silent.
Anthony finally opened the envelope.
Inside was a small flash drive.
A handwritten note.
And several documents.
The note was written in Evelyn’s familiar handwriting.
Anthony read it silently.
Then his hands started shaking.
“What does it say?”” Layla asked.
Anthony swallowed.
“It says…”
He stopped.
Like saying the words out loud would make them real.
“She knew someone close to us was trying to access Layla’s inheritance.””
Layla’s heart dropped.
Michael nodded slowly.
“She suspected someone would wait until Layla turned eighteen.””
Anthony looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Would you have believed me?””
Anthony didn’t answer.
Because deep down, he knew.
Years ago, he would not have.
His relationship with Michael had already collapsed after their father’s death.
Michael believed Anthony had taken control of the family business unfairly.
Anthony believed Michael was irresponsible.
They stopped speaking.
And then Evelyn became sick.
By the time Michael discovered something was wrong, there was already too much damage.
Layla picked up the flash drive.
“What’s on this?””
Anthony looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
Michael answered.
“Your mother’s evidence.””
They moved into the office.
Anthony connected the flash drive to the computer.
A single folder appeared.
EVELYN.
Inside were dozens of files.
Financial records.
Emails.
Photos.
And one video.
The date was two months before Evelyn died.
Anthony clicked.
The screen showed Evelyn sitting in their old living room.
Older.
Tired.
But still strong.
Layla covered her mouth.
Her mother.
Alive.
Speaking.
“Anthony,” Evelyn said in the video, “if you are watching this, then I was right to prepare for the worst.””
Anthony closed his eyes.
Layla watched every second.
“I need you to listen carefully. Do not blame yourself.””
A tear slipped down Anthony’s face.
Evelyn continued.
“I know you trust the people you love. That is one of the things I admire most about you. But sometimes the people closest to us are the ones who know exactly where to hurt us.””
The video paused briefly.
Then Evelyn held up a document.
“I discovered money was being moved from accounts connected to my father’s estate.””
Anthony frowned.
“My father’s estate?””
Michael leaned forward.
“That’s what I found too.””
Evelyn continued.
“Someone has been trying to gain access to assets that were meant for Layla.””
The video stopped.
A new file opened automatically.
A list of names appeared.
Layla read the screen.
And then she froze.
Because one name was there.
Monica Reed.
Anthony stared.
“No.””
Michael looked grim.
“She was involved earlier than you thought.””
Layla felt sick.
Monica had not entered their lives by accident.
She had known.
She had planned.
But then another name appeared.
And this time, Anthony stepped back.
Because it was someone he never expected.
A lawyer.
His family lawyer.
The same man who handled Evelyn’s estate.
Anthony whispered:
“Daniel.””
Michael nodded.
“Your lawyer.””
The man who had been trusted with everything.
The man who knew every account.
Every document.
Every weakness.
Layla looked at her father.
“How many people knew?””
Anthony didn’t answer.
Because he finally understood.
The betrayal was bigger than Monica.
She was only one piece.
Someone had been moving behind the scenes for years.
Then the office lights suddenly went out.
Everyone froze.
A second later, the sound of glass breaking came from downstairs.
Anthony immediately stood.
“Stay here.””
But Layla grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“I’m not hiding anymore.””
For years, Layla had been treated like someone who needed protection.
But now she understood something.
Being protected did not mean being powerless.
Anthony nodded.
Together, they walked downstairs.
The back door was open.
Cold air rushed inside.
On the floor was a broken window.
And beside it…
May you like
The envelope from Michael.
Gone.
