Chapter 4: The Secret Monica Tried to Bury Forever

The morning after the truth came out, the house felt like a place nobody recognized anymore.

The same walls stood tall.

The same expensive furniture filled the rooms.

The same family photos decorated the hallway.

But everything had changed.

Because sometimes a home does not break when someone leaves.

Sometimes it breaks when everyone finally sees the truth.

Layla sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the small wooden box sitting in front of her.

It had belonged to her mother.

Anthony had brought it from the safe after the lawyer finished documenting everything.

Inside were the few things that remained untouched.

A handwritten letter.

A faded photograph.

A silver necklace that Evelyn wore every day.

Layla ran her fingers across the necklace.

For years, she had wondered if her mother had known how much she would miss her.

Now she knew.

Her mother had prepared for a future she would never see.

A future where Layla would need strength.

A future where people might try to take advantage of her.

A future exactly like this.

There was a soft knock on the door.

Layla quickly wiped her eyes.

“Come in.””

Anthony stepped inside.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Their relationship had always been strong.

But the last few days had shaken everything.

“I’m sorry,” Anthony said.

Layla looked up.

“For what?””

“For not seeing it sooner.””

Her expression softened.

“Dad…”

“I should have noticed.””

He sat beside her.

“I thought because Monica never yelled at you, because she acted polite, everything was fine.””

Layla looked down.

“She was careful.””

Anthony nodded.

“I know that now.””

A painful silence passed.

Then Layla asked the question she had been avoiding.

“Did Mom really create the trust because she thought something like this could happen?””

Anthony looked at the letter.

“She created it because she knew life could change.””

He paused.

“Your mother was smart. She knew money could create problems between people.””

Layla opened the letter carefully.

The handwriting was delicate.

The first words immediately made her heart ache.

“My sweet Layla…”

She stopped reading.

She couldn’t continue.

Anthony looked away, giving her privacy.

But then Layla noticed something.

A second envelope was hidden beneath the letter.

Her name was written on it.

Not Layla.

Not daughter.

Just:

“For the day you learn who truly stands beside you.””

Her hands trembled.

“What is this?””

Anthony looked surprised.

“I’ve never seen that before.””

Layla opened it.

Inside was another letter.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Evelyn with someone Layla didn’t recognize.

A young woman.

Standing beside her mother.

Both of them were smiling.

On the back of the photo were three words.

“Find Rachel Carter.””

Layla frowned.

“Who is Rachel Carter?””

Anthony looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

But his expression changed.

Because there was something else inside the envelope.

A small key.

Not a house key.

Not a normal key.

An old metal key with initials engraved into it.

E.C.

Evelyn Carter.

Anthony stared at it.

“Your mother never told me about this.””

Layla looked at him.

“Dad… what was Mom hiding?””

Before Anthony could answer, his phone rang.

It was his attorney.

He stepped away to take the call.

Layla looked again at the photograph.

Rachel Carter.

The name felt important.

Like a missing piece of a puzzle.

A few minutes later, Anthony returned.

His face was serious.

“What happened?””

“The attorney found something.””

Layla stood.

“What?””

“The trust documents.””

She waited.

“They’re not the only thing Evelyn left.””

Anthony handed her a folder.

Inside were copies of old financial records.

And one page that made both of them freeze.

A second account.

A hidden account.

Created by Evelyn before her death.

The amount inside was enough to change everything.

Layla looked shocked.

“Why didn’t you know about this?””

Anthony shook his head.

“Because I wasn’t supposed to.””

The room became silent.

“Your mother set it up privately.””

“But why?””

Anthony looked at the photograph.

“Maybe because she knew someone might try to interfere.””

At that moment, a noise came from downstairs.

A door closing.

Anthony immediately stood.

“Stay here.””

But Layla followed him.

They walked into the living room.

Monica was standing near the front door.

A suitcase beside her.

“You’re leaving?”” Anthony asked.

Monica looked cold.

“I think everyone needs space.””

Layla noticed something.

Monica wasn’t angry.

She wasn’t defeated.

She looked calm.

Too calm.

Anthony noticed too.

“Where are you going?””

“Somewhere peaceful.””

“No.””

Monica smiled.

“No?””

“You don’t get to disappear after this.””

Her expression hardened.

“You’ve already decided I’m guilty.””

“You stole from my daughter.””

“I made mistakes.””

Anthony stared.

“Those weren’t mistakes.””

Monica grabbed her purse.

“You know what’s interesting?””

Nobody answered.

“You think Evelyn was perfect.””

Anthony’s face tightened.

“Don’t.””

“But she wasn’t.””

Layla felt a chill.

“What are you talking about?””

Monica looked at her.

“Your mother had secrets too.””

Anthony stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

“No.””

Monica smiled.

“You deserve to know.””

The room went silent.

“Evelyn wasn’t just protecting you.””

Layla’s heart started beating faster.

“What does that mean?””

Monica picked up her suitcase.

“It means your mother knew something about this family.””

Then she walked toward the door.

Anthony grabbed her arm.

“What did she know?””

Monica looked at him.

For the first time, she looked genuinely afraid.

“Ask yourself why she created a secret account.””

Then she left.

And for the first time since discovering the betrayal, Anthony looked uncertain.

Because Monica had lied about many things.

But what if this one thing was true?

What if Evelyn really had been hiding something?
