Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Evelyn’s Secret
Rachel Carter answered the phone on the third ring.
“Hello?””
Anthony looked at Layla.
They were sitting in his office, surrounded by documents, photographs, and memories from a life they thought they understood.
“Mrs. Carter?””
There was a pause.
“Yes?””
“My name is Anthony Reed.””
Another silence.
Longer this time.
“How did you get this number?””
Anthony looked at the photograph.
“My wife left something with your name on it.””
The woman’s breathing changed.
“Evelyn?””
Layla immediately leaned closer.
The way Rachel said her mother’s name told her everything.
This woman had known Evelyn.
Not casually.
Not briefly.
She mattered.
“Yes,” Anthony said.
“She left a note asking Layla to find you.””
The phone went completely silent.
Then Rachel whispered:
“She finally did it.””
Anthony frowned.
“Did what?””
“Protected her.””
Layla felt tears forming.
“Can I speak to her?””
Rachel hesitated.
Then:
“Of course.””
Anthony handed over the phone.
“Hello?””
The woman on the other end sounded older.
Tired.
But kind.
“Layla?””
“Yes.””
“I knew one day you would call.””
Layla’s voice shook.
“How did you know?””
“Because your mother believed you would grow up strong enough to find the truth.””
Those words hit harder than expected.
Layla closed her eyes.
“My mother knew you?””
Rachel laughed softly.
“Your mother saved my life.””
Anthony and Layla exchanged a look.
“What?””
Rachel continued.
“Twenty years ago, Evelyn discovered something wrong at the company where she worked.””
Anthony immediately became serious.
“What kind of wrong?””
“Financial fraud.””
The room went quiet.
“Your mother found evidence that someone was stealing money.””
“Who?””
Rachel sighed.
“That’s the problem.””
Layla gripped the phone.
“Who was it?””
“We never proved it.””
“Why?””
“Because the person had power.””
Rachel explained that Evelyn had uncovered missing funds connected to several business accounts.
She had planned to expose it.
But then she became sick.
And before she could finish, she created the trust.
She moved money.
She protected Layla.
Because she believed someone might try to silence the truth.
Anthony stood up.
“Who else knew?””
Rachel paused.
“Only a few people.””
“Names.””
Another pause.
Then Rachel said:
“Your brother.””
Anthony froze.
“My brother?””
Layla looked at him.
Anthony’s face changed.
Because he had a brother.
A brother he had not spoken to in years.
Michael.
The family member who disappeared after a major argument.
The man everyone stopped mentioning.
“Why would Evelyn suspect him?””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“She never accused him.””
“But?””
“She was afraid of him.””
Anthony stepped back.
“No.””
Rachel continued.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to make sure Layla received everything she left behind.””
Layla felt sick.
“My mom thought someone could hurt her?””
“Yes.””
The room became painfully quiet.
After the call ended, Anthony sat down.
For the first time in years, Layla saw fear in her father’s eyes.
Not anger.
Not sadness.
Fear.
“Dad?””
He looked at her.
“I thought I lost your mother because of her illness.””
Layla slowly approached.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying maybe I didn’t know the whole story.””
That night, Anthony searched through old files.
Not Monica’s files.
Not Evelyn’s trust documents.
His own memories.
And then he found something.
A letter from Evelyn.
A letter he had never opened.
Because he thought it was only meant for him after her death.
But the date was strange.
It was written two months before she died.
The envelope had one sentence:
“Anthony, if you are reading this, something has gone wrong.””
His hands shook as he opened it.
And after reading the first line, his entire world changed.
May you like
Because Evelyn had written:
“Someone in our family is trying to take what belongs to Layla.””
