Chapter 2: The Jewelry Box That Was Never Supposed to Open
Anthony did not yell.
That was what frightened Monica the most.
A person who screamed could be dismissed as emotional.
A person who became silent was dangerous.
“Everyone leave,” Anthony said.
The guests immediately began gathering their things.
Nobody wanted to be part of a family explosion.
Within minutes, the house was quiet.
Only Anthony, Monica, Sierra, and Layla remained.
Anthony held the bracelet.
“Where did you get this?””
Sierra looked at Monica.
A small movement.
Almost invisible.
But Anthony saw it.
“Answer me.””
Monica crossed her arms.
“I don’t understand why you’re acting like this.””
“Because that bracelet belonged to Evelyn.””
Layla looked up.
Her mother’s name sounded painful and comforting at the same time.
“I thought you said you bought it,” Anthony continued.
Monica forced a smile.
“Maybe I forgot.””
“You forgot?””
His laugh was empty.
“You forgot buying jewelry that belonged to my dead wife?””
Sierra looked uncomfortable.
She had never seen her father this angry.
Anthony walked upstairs.
“Where are you going?”” Monica asked.
“To the safe.””
Something changed in Monica’s face.
A flash of panic.
Layla noticed.
And for the first time, she wondered if her father noticed too.
Anthony reached his office and unlocked the hidden safe behind a painting.
Inside were documents.
Old photographs.
And Evelyn’s jewelry box.
It was supposed to contain the things he had saved for Layla.
Things that belonged to her mother.
Things he planned to give her when she was older.
He opened the box.
Then he stopped.
“No.””
Layla came closer.
“What happened?””
Anthony looked inside.
Half the jewelry was gone.
The necklace Evelyn wore on their anniversary.
The earrings she wore on Layla’s first birthday.
The ring Anthony gave her when they promised forever.
Gone.
Monica appeared behind them.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
Anthony slowly turned.
“It proves someone had access to this safe.””
“You’re accusing me?””
“I’m asking a question.””
“You always do this.””
Monica’s voice rose.
“You always protect Layla.””
Anthony stared at her.
“She was framed tonight.””
“You don’t know that.””
“I know my daughter.””
Layla looked away.
She hated that this was happening.
She hated that her family was falling apart.
But deep down, she knew something was wrong.
Anthony closed the safe.
Then he looked at Sierra.
“Where did you get the bracelet?””
Sierra hesitated.
“My mom gave it to me.””
Anthony’s eyes narrowed.
“Your mother gave you Evelyn’s bracelet?””
Sierra became nervous.
“I didn’t know it was hers.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Monica stepped between them.
“Anthony, you’re making our daughter uncomfortable.””
“Our daughter?””
The question was cold.
Monica stopped.
Anthony continued.
“Did you give Sierra jewelry from Evelyn’s collection?””
Monica said nothing.
That was answer enough.
Layla felt tears burning her eyes.
“My mom’s things…”
Her voice cracked.
“You gave them to her?””
Anthony looked at her.
“I didn’t.””
“But someone did.””
The pain in Layla’s voice was impossible to hide.
For years she had believed her mother’s memories were safe.
Protected.
Now she realized pieces of Evelyn had been taken away without her knowing.
Anthony placed a hand on Layla’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry.””
Then he looked at Monica.
“We’re checking Sierra’s room.””
Sierra immediately reacted.
“What?””
“If there are more of Evelyn’s belongings in this house, I want to know.””
Monica shook her head.
“This is ridiculous.””
But nobody listened.
They walked into Sierra’s room.
At first, everything looked normal.
Designer clothes.
Expensive bags.
Perfume bottles.
Then Anthony opened a drawer.
And froze.
Inside was a necklace.
Layla recognized it instantly.
Her mother wore it in every family photo.
Then came earrings.
A bracelet.
A ring.
One by one, Evelyn’s possessions appeared.
Layla covered her mouth.
“No…”
Sierra started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
Anthony turned.
“How did you get these?””
“I told you, Mom gave them to me.””
Everyone looked at Monica.
The truth was no longer hiding.
It was standing in the middle of the room.
Monica’s carefully built image was cracking.
But then Sierra said something that changed everything.
She wiped her tears.
“Mom said Layla was going to get everything anyway.””
Anthony stopped.
“What did you say?””
Sierra looked confused.
“She said when Layla turned eighteen, she would get everything. The house. The money. Everything Dad kept for her.””
Anthony’s face went still.
“What money?””
Sierra immediately realized her mistake.
“What?””
“What trust fund are you talking about?””
Monica’s expression changed.
Anthony slowly turned toward his wife.
“How do you know about Evelyn’s trust?””
May you like
Nobody spoke.
The silence answered for her.
