Chapter 12: The Woman Who Had Nothing Left to Lose

Monica was waiting for them.

Anthony knew it immediately.

The message wasn’t a threat.

It was an invitation.

She wanted them to find the office.

She wanted them to discover the journal.

She wanted them to know just enough.

Because Monica had never been afraid of the truth.

She was afraid of losing control.

And now she was losing everything.

The question was why.

They found her at the old family estate.

The same place where Anthony and Michael had grown up.

The same place where their father had hidden his secrets.

Monica stood outside.

Waiting.

No disguise.

No fear.

“You finally figured it out.””

Anthony walked toward her.

“You knew about this room.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about my father’s journal.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Monica smiled sadly.

“Because your father was the first person who ruined my family.””

Anthony stared.

“Explain.””

“My mother begged him for help.””

“And?””

“He refused.””

“Because he wouldn’t give her stolen money.””

Monica’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” Anthony said.

“I understand perfectly.””

She laughed.

“Do you?””

She looked at Layla.

“You think your mother was innocent?””

Layla stepped forward.

“Don’t talk about my mother.””

Monica smiled.

“She knew the truth.””

Anthony’s voice became dangerous.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Monica looked at all of them.

“I spent years being invisible.””

Nobody spoke.

“I watched Evelyn become this perfect woman everyone loved.””

Her voice cracked.

“I watched everyone protect Layla.””

Layla stared.

“This was never about me.””

Monica looked at her.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised everyone.

“It was never about you.””

“Then what?””

Monica looked at Anthony.

“It was about him.””

Anthony froze.

“Me?””

“You had everything.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“A loving wife. A family. A future.””

“And you wanted it?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I wanted revenge.””

The word hung in the air.

Michael stepped forward.

“You destroyed an innocent girl’s life for revenge?””

Monica looked at him.

“I didn’t destroy her.””

She pointed at Layla.

“I showed everyone how fragile her world was.””

Anthony’s anger exploded.

“You framed my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“You stole from her mother.””

“Yes.””

“You lied to me for years.””

Monica looked away.

“Yes.””

The honesty was more disturbing than any denial.

Then she said something nobody expected.

“But I never caused Evelyn’s death.””

Everyone froze.

Anthony stared.

“What?””

Monica’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“I wanted her money. I wanted control.””

She shook her head.

“But someone else wanted her gone.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Who?””

Monica looked toward the old house.

“The person you trusted most.””

Anthony’s heart stopped.

Again.

The same phrase.

The same warning.

“Who?””

Monica whispered:

“Your best friend.””

Nobody moved.

Anthony thought of everyone.

Every person who had stood beside him.

Every person who knew his secrets.

Then Monica added:

“And he’s still pretending to help you.””

Anthony’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

The caller ID appeared.

Daniel.

Anthony answered.

But there was no greeting.

Only one sentence.

A voice he recognized.

A voice full of panic.

“Anthony…”

A pause.

Then:

“I found who really killed Evelyn.””

The call cut off.

May you like

And somewhere in the distance…

a gunshot echoed.
