Chapter 8: The Person Who Was Always Watching

The police arrived thirty minutes later.

The house was searched.

Security footage was reviewed.

But whoever broke in knew exactly what they were doing.

They avoided cameras.

They avoided alarms.

They took only one thing.

Evelyn’s evidence.

Nothing else.

That detail bothered Anthony.

A thief would take valuables.

A desperate person would take money.

But whoever entered the house wanted only the truth.

Layla sat on the couch while officers searched.

Michael stood near the window.

“You know who did it.””

Anthony’s eyes narrowed.

“Do I?””

“Yes.””

Michael looked toward the hallway.

“You’re thinking about Monica.””

“She knew about the file.””

“So did Daniel.””

Anthony said nothing.

Michael continued.

“And so did me.””

Layla looked at him.

“You’re saying you could have taken it?””

Michael turned.

“Yes.””

That honesty shocked her.

“But I didn’t.””

“Why should we believe you?””

Michael looked at her.

“Because your mother trusted me enough to leave me a copy.””

Anthony immediately turned.

“A copy?””

Michael sighed.

“I didn’t want to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew you would think I was after the money.””

The accusation hurt because it was true.

Anthony had always believed the worst about his brother.

Michael reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small device.

A second flash drive.

Layla stared.

“You had another one?””

Michael nodded.

“Your mother gave it to me.””

Anthony looked furious.

“You kept this for years?””

“I kept it because I was waiting.””

“For what?””

“For you to finally see the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Anthony walked away.

The anger on his face was mixed with something else.

Shame.

Because he realized he had spent years fighting the wrong enemy.

The next morning, they met with Rachel Carter.

She arrived at the house carrying an old folder.

The moment she saw Layla, her eyes filled with tears.

“You look just like her.””

Layla smiled sadly.

“Everyone says that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Rachel sat down.

“I wish I could have found you sooner.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Rachel looked at Anthony.

“Because Evelyn asked me not to.””

Anthony frowned.

“She did?””

Rachel nodded.

“She said if something happened to her, I needed to stay away until Layla was old enough to understand.””

“Understand what?””

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

“The truth about her grandparents.””

Layla looked confused.

“My grandparents?””

Rachel nodded.

“Your mother’s family had a company. A very successful one.””

Anthony looked surprised.

“I thought her parents left everything to charity.””

“They did publicly.””

Rachel looked at him.

“But privately, there was another agreement.””

She placed a document on the table.

“The Carter family created a protected inheritance.””

Layla stared.

“How much?””

Rachel shook her head.

“It was never about the amount.””

“Then what was it about?””

“Control.””

Rachel explained.

The inheritance came with a condition.

The person who controlled it had influence over major company decisions.

If someone could gain access to Layla’s trust, they could control everything connected to it.

Including the business empire her grandparents built.

Anthony finally understood.

“Monica wasn’t after Layla’s money.””

“No,” Rachel said.

“She was after power.””

The room went silent.

Then Layla asked the question everyone avoided.

“Why me?””

Rachel looked at her.

“Because you are the only person who can legally inherit it.””

“But I’m just one person.””

“No.””

Rachel smiled sadly.

“You are the last Carter.””

The words landed heavily.

Layla had spent her entire life believing she was just a normal girl who lost her mother too soon.

She never knew she carried a legacy.

A responsibility.

A target.

Then Rachel revealed something else.

“Your mother discovered Monica was asking questions before they met.””

Anthony froze.

“What?””

Rachel nodded.

“Monica knew about the Carter inheritance before she married you.””

Layla felt betrayed all over again.

Anthony looked devastated.

“She chose me because of Evelyn’s money.””

“Not just Evelyn’s money.””

Rachel looked at Layla.

“Because of you.””

Before anyone could respond, Anthony’s phone rang.

It was his attorney.

Daniel.

Anthony answered.

“What do you want?””

Daniel sounded nervous.

“Anthony, you need to listen carefully.””

“Where are you?””

“I made a mistake.””

Anthony stood.

“What mistake?””

A pause.

Then:

“I helped Monica access the documents.””

Everyone froze.

Anthony gripped the phone.

“Why?””

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Because she threatened me.””

“With what?””

Another pause.

May you like

Then Daniel whispered:

“She knew what happened the night Evelyn died.””
