Chapter 7: The Truth Buried Beneath a Family Name

Daniel had spent four years believing the hardest thing he would ever survive was losing Sarah.

He was wrong.

The hardest thing was discovering that the woman he loved had been fighting a battle he never knew existed.

For the next several hours, he sat inside Renee Sterling’s private office, surrounded by documents that seemed to rewrite his entire life.

Every page created another question.

Every answer created another mystery.

“My father knew yours,” Daniel said quietly.

Renee nodded.

“That’s what the records suggest.””

“Suggest?””

She looked uncomfortable.

“Because many of the records were destroyed.””

“Destroyed by who?””

Renee didn’t answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

Daniel stood and walked toward the window.

Below him, Boston moved like nothing had changed.

Cars drove through intersections.

People walked to coffee shops.

Employees entered the Sterling Global building carrying laptops and talking about ordinary things.

Meanwhile, his entire understanding of his past was collapsing.

“Tell me about my father.””

Renee looked surprised.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“I don’t know much.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She opened a file.

“Your father’s name was Michael Hayes.””

Daniel nodded.

“He worked as an electrical engineer.””

“Yes.””

“He wasn’t involved in business.””

“That’s what everyone believed.””

Daniel turned.

“What does that mean?””

Renee looked down.

“My father hired him twenty-two years ago.””

Daniel froze.

“My father never mentioned Sterling.””

“I know.””

“Why would he hide that?””

“Because whatever happened between them was dangerous.””

Daniel walked back to the desk.

“What happened?””

Renee hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your father discovered something.””

“What?””

“Something about Sterling Global’s most valuable project.””

Daniel waited.

“Twenty-two years ago, my father’s company developed a satellite communication system that changed the industry.””

“Okay.””

“But the technology wasn’t created only by Sterling.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying there was another person involved.””

“Who?””

“Someone who was erased from history.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“And that person was my father?””

Renee nodded.

“Possibly.””

The room became silent.

Daniel felt anger rising.

His entire life, he had thought his father was a quiet engineer who worked hard and came home every night.

Now he was learning there was another version of him.

A secret version.

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

Renee’s expression softened.

“Maybe because he wanted to protect you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“What?””

“That people kept secrets because they wanted to protect me.””

He looked at her.

“But secrets don’t disappear. They wait.””

Renee didn’t argue.

Because she knew he was right.

That evening, Daniel returned home earlier than usual.

Lily was sitting on the floor drawing.

She looked up.

“Dad?””

“Hey.””

“You look sad.””

Daniel forced a smile.

“Long day.””

She held up her drawing.

It was a picture of a house with lightning bolts around it.

“What is that?””

“My invention.””

Daniel smiled.

“You invented a lightning house?””

“No.””

She pointed.

“This is a house that never loses power.””

Daniel studied the drawing.

“You made a backup system?””

“Yeah.””

“Why?””

Lily shrugged.

“So nobody is scared in the dark.””

The words hit him harder than she realized.

Because that was exactly what Sarah had done.

She had spent her life trying to keep everyone else out of the darkness.

Even when she was afraid herself.

That night, after Lily went to bed, Daniel found an old box in his closet.

A box he hadn’t opened in years.

Inside were things from his childhood.

Old photographs.

Letters.

His father’s tools.

At the bottom was a small metal case.

Daniel had never seen it before.

He opened it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

His father’s handwriting.

Daniel immediately recognized it.

His hands shook.

The note was short.

“Daniel, if you ever find this, it means the past caught up with us.””

He stopped breathing.

The next line made his heart race.

“Trust the Sterling daughter, not the Sterling name.””

Daniel read it again.

And again.

Why would his father write that?

Why would he trust Renee?

He grabbed his phone.

He needed answers.

The next morning, Daniel showed Renee the note.

She stared at it.

“My father’s handwriting.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You recognize it?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Renee looked nervous.

“Because I have something similar.””

She walked to a cabinet and removed a small envelope.

Inside was another note.

Arthur Sterling’s handwriting.

Daniel read it.

“Renee, if Daniel Hayes appears, believe him before anyone else.””

Daniel looked up.

The two notes.

Two fathers.

Two warnings.

One name.

Daniel Hayes.

“What were they preparing for?”” Daniel asked.

Renee shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

“Someone knows.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Renee looked toward the office door.

“Thomas.””

Finding Thomas Whitaker was easier than expected.

The problem was getting him to talk.

He agreed to meet them at a private restaurant downtown.

When he arrived, he looked calm.

Too calm.

“Renee.””

“Thomas.””

His eyes moved to Daniel.

“And you.””

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Disappointed?””

Thomas sat.

“Concerned.””

“Why?””

“Because people who enter situations they don’t understand usually get hurt.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“You know a lot about people getting hurt.””

Thomas smiled.

“You think I’m the villain.””

“I think you know more than you admit.””

Thomas looked at Renee.

“Your father always underestimated how emotional decisions could become.””

Renee’s expression hardened.

“My father was murdered.””

Thomas paused.

Then calmly:

“That is a serious accusation.””

“You know something.””

“I know grief makes people search for enemies.””

Daniel watched him carefully.

The man was controlled.

Experienced.

Dangerous.

Then Thomas said something unexpected.

“Ask your father’s old partner.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

Thomas stood.

“Ask Michael Hayes.””

Daniel felt his body go cold.

“That’s my father.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.””

The silence was unbearable.

Then Thomas walked away.

Daniel and Renee remained seated.

“He knew,” Daniel whispered.

Renee nodded.

“Yes.””

“He knew my father.””

“Yes.””

“And he’s afraid.””

Renee looked toward the door.

“No.””

“What?””

“He’s not afraid.””

May you like

She lowered her voice.

“He’s warning us.””
