Chapter 12: The Betrayal That Changed Everything

The warehouse felt colder.

Daniel watched Renee read the documents again and again.

She looked like she wanted to deny every word.

But couldn’t.

“What is The Guardian?”” Daniel asked.

Ethan answered.

“A surveillance system.””

Renee looked up.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“My father built security technology.””

“That’s what he told people.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“But behind closed doors, Arthur wanted something bigger.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Control.””

Ethan nodded.

“Exactly.””

The word echoed.

Renee shook her head.

“My father would never.””

Ethan laughed softly.

“You sound exactly like I did.””

That stopped her.

“What?””

“I believed him too.””

For the first time, Ethan’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Do you think I became who I am because I wanted power?””

Nobody answered.

“I became this because I learned the truth too late.””

Daniel watched carefully.

Ethan was dangerous.

But he wasn’t lying about everything.

That was the most dangerous kind of person.

Someone who mixed truth with manipulation.

Ethan revealed the history.

Years earlier, Arthur Sterling and Michael Hayes created The Guardian together.

At first, it was designed to protect corporate secrets.

But as the technology grew, Arthur saw possibilities beyond protection.

He wanted information.

Influence.

Advantage.

“He started collecting data on everyone,” Ethan said.

“Employees. Investors. Competitors.””

Renee whispered:

“No.””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Your father became obsessed with knowing everything.””

Daniel thought about Arthur’s warnings.

Trust no one.

Not even the person who gives you the truth.

Maybe Arthur had been afraid of his own creation.

“What happened between your father and mine?”” Daniel asked.

Ethan looked at him.

“Your father found out.””

“And?””

“He wanted to expose Arthur.””

Daniel felt sick.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he keep quiet?””

“Because Arthur convinced him.””

“Of what?””

“That the system could be controlled.””

Daniel shook his head.

“And Sarah?””

Ethan looked away.

“Sarah found the same evidence years later.””

“And you tried to stop her.””

“Yes.””

Renee stepped forward.

“Why?””

“Because if she exposed it, everything collapsed.””

“You mean your power.””

Ethan looked at her.

“I mean the company.””

“No.””

Renee’s voice became stronger.

“You mean yourself.””

The words hit him.

For a moment, Ethan looked almost wounded.

Then the mask returned.

Daniel noticed something.

A detail.

Something small.

Ethan kept touching his left wrist.

Nervous habit.

A scar.

Daniel remembered something from the files.

A medical report.

Ethan Sterling had suffered a serious injury years ago.

Possible memory complications.

“What happened to your wrist?”” Daniel asked.

Ethan stopped.

“What?””

“Your wrist.””

Silence.

Daniel continued.

“Your injury.””

Renee looked confused.

Ethan’s expression changed.

“How do you know about that?””

“Records.””

A strange realization appeared.

Ethan wasn’t prepared for that question.

Why?

Because the story had another missing piece.

“You weren’t just involved,” Daniel said.

“You were hurt.””

Ethan said nothing.

“You weren’t the person controlling everything.””

Renee looked at Daniel.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel stared at Ethan.

“I’m saying someone used him.””

The warehouse went silent.

Ethan’s face changed.

A tiny crack in his confidence.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Maybe.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“But I know people.””

He looked at Renee.

“I know what guilt looks like.””

Then he looked at Ethan.

“And what fear looks like.””

Ethan suddenly became angry.

“Leave.””

Daniel didn’t move.

“You’re not the one we should be afraid of.””

Ethan stared at him.

Then quietly said:

“You’re closer than you think.””

Before they left, Ethan gave Renee one final warning.

“Your father didn’t choose Daniel because he trusted him.””

Renee stopped.

“What?””

“He chose him because he knew Daniel would uncover the truth.””

Daniel frowned.

“What truth?””

Ethan smiled.

“The truth about Sarah.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

Renee looked terrified.

“What about Sarah?””

Ethan stepped into the shadows.

“She didn’t die because she discovered the conspiracy.””

A pause.

“She died because she discovered who was protecting it.””

Daniel felt his heartbeat accelerate.

“Who?””

Ethan looked directly at him.

Then said:

“Ask the person who raised you.””

Daniel froze.

“My mother died when I was young.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“No.””

The silence was unbearable.

“What?””

Ethan whispered:

“Your mother is alive.””

Daniel felt the world stop.

Impossible.

His mother had been gone for decades.

Everyone knew.

Everyone told him.

But Ethan looked certain.

And then he added the words that destroyed the last piece of Daniel’s certainty.

“She has been hiding from Sterling Global the entire time.””

Daniel looked at Renee.

Neither of them spoke.

Because suddenly the mystery was no longer about billionaires.

Or companies.

Or money.

May you like

It was about family.

And the people who had lied to him his entire life.
