Chapter 13: The Mother Who Disappeared From His Life

Daniel did not speak during the entire drive back to Boston.

Not one word.

Renee tried twice.

Both times, she stopped.

Because she understood.

Some truths didn’t hurt because they were unbelievable.

They hurt because some part of you had always suspected them.

Daniel stared out the window as the city lights passed by.

His mother was alive.

The sentence felt impossible.

He had spent his entire adult life believing he had lost both parents.

His father had died when he was young.

His mother had supposedly passed away years later.

That was the story.

The story everyone gave him.

The story he never questioned.

Until now.

“Daniel.””

Renee’s voice was quiet.

He didn’t answer.

“I’m sorry.””

He finally looked at her.

“For what?””

“For everything.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Renee looked down.

“I know.””

The anger inside him was growing.

Not at her.

Not completely.

At everyone.

His father.

His mother.

Arthur Sterling.

Sarah.

Everyone had known pieces of the truth.

Everyone had decided he couldn’t handle it.

Everyone had made choices for him.

“I’m tired of people protecting me.””

Renee looked at him.

“What?””

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

He shook his head.

“My whole life, people keep saying they hid things because they loved me.””

A bitter smile appeared.

“But nobody asked me if I wanted the truth.””

Renee had no answer.

Because she knew he was right.

They returned to Renee’s estate.

Claire was waiting.

One look at Daniel’s face told her something had happened.

“What happened?””

Daniel walked past her.

“Find someone.””

Claire followed.

“Who?””

“My mother.””

The room froze.

Renee looked at Claire.

“Daniel’s mother may still be alive.””

Claire’s expression changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel turned.

“That’s what I thought.””

Claire immediately opened her laptop.

Within minutes, she began searching.

Government records.

Medical databases.

Archived files.

Nothing.

No trace.

Then she stopped.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

Claire stared at the screen.

“There’s a sealed record.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“About my mother?””

“Yes.””

“Open it.””

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because someone restricted access.””

Renee frowned.

“Who?””

Claire looked at her.

“Sterling Global.””

The room went silent.

Three hours later, they found the location.

Not through official records.

Through an old financial transaction.

A small house outside Concord, Massachusetts.

Daniel sat in the car for five minutes before getting out.

Renee stayed beside him.

“You don’t have to do this alone.””

Daniel looked at the house.

“I’ve been alone with this my whole life.””

Renee understood.

He walked to the door.

Knocked.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

Then a voice came from inside.

“Who is it?””

Daniel froze.

He knew that voice.

Not because he remembered it clearly.

Because something inside him recognized it.

“My name is Daniel Hayes.””

Silence.

Then:

“Why are you here?””

His heart started beating faster.

“Because I was told my mother is alive.””

The door opened.

And the woman standing there looked older.

Much older.

But Daniel knew.

He knew immediately.

Because some things don’t disappear.

Not completely.

Her eyes.

The shape of her face.

The sadness.

“Daniel.””

One word.

One impossible word.

And suddenly, the entire world became quiet.

His mother cried first.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

Like someone who had been holding those tears for decades.

Daniel stood there unable to move.

He had imagined this moment before.

When he was a child.

When he was angry.

When he missed her.

But never like this.

Never after discovering she had chosen to leave.

“Why?””

The question came out before anything else.

His mother lowered her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

Daniel almost laughed.

The same words.

Again.

“Everyone says that.””

His mother looked at him.

“Because it’s true.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Because it’s easier than admitting you made a choice.””

She looked away.

And that hurt more than anger.

Because it meant he was right.

Her name was Elizabeth Hayes.

She invited them inside.

The house was small.

Nothing like Renee’s mansion.

Nothing like Sterling Global.

Just a quiet home filled with books and old photographs.

Daniel noticed something immediately.

A photograph on the shelf.

His father.

His mother.

Arthur Sterling.

All together.

“What is this?””

Elizabeth closed her eyes.

“The beginning of everything.””

Daniel sat down.

“Tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“Your father and Arthur Sterling were friends before they became business partners.””

“I know.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t.””

She looked at Renee.

“Arthur wasn’t always the man he became.””

Renee looked away.

“My father changed.””

“Yes.””

Elizabeth nodded.

“Power changes people.””

She explained everything.

Arthur and Michael created technology together.

They believed they were building something that could make companies safer.

But Arthur became obsessed.

He wanted more.

Information.

Control.

Influence.

“When Michael tried to leave, Arthur threatened him.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“And you?””

Elizabeth looked down.

“I found out.””

“What?””

“That Arthur had people watching our family.””

Daniel went silent.

“He knew about me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because your father had something Arthur wanted.””

“What?””

Elizabeth looked at Renee.

“The original source code.””

Daniel felt numb.

The source code.

The thing everyone had been fighting over.

The reason people lied.

The reason Sarah died.

“The Guardian.””

Elizabeth nodded.

“Your father hid the original version.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“You do.””

She looked at him.

“I know he gave it to someone.””

“Who?””

Elizabeth whispered:

“Sarah.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Of course.

May you like

Sarah.

She had been carrying the final piece.
