Chapter 14: The Final Message From Sarah
Daniel spent the night at his mother’s house.
He didn’t sleep.
He couldn’t.
Too many memories.
Too many missing pieces.
Too many years stolen from him.
Renee sat outside on the porch beside him.
For once, neither of them had anything to say.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“She knew.””
Renee looked at him.
“Sarah?””
He nodded.
“She knew everything.””
“Yes.””
“And she still stayed with me.””
Renee looked at the sky.
“She loved you.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I don’t know if I’m angry or grateful.””
“You can be both.””
That answer surprised him.
Because it was the first time someone wasn’t trying to fix his feelings.
The next morning, Elizabeth gave Daniel a box.
“This belonged to Sarah.””
Daniel froze.
“What?””
“Your wife left it here.””
“When?””
“Two months before she died.””
Daniel opened it.
Inside were letters.
Hundreds of pages.
All written by Sarah.
His hands shook.
“Why didn’t she give them to me?””
Elizabeth looked away.
“Because she didn’t know if she would survive long enough to explain.””
Daniel opened the first letter.
The handwriting immediately broke him.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, I’m sorry.
Not because I left.
But because I kept things from you.
He stopped.
Renee looked away, giving him privacy.
He continued reading.
I wanted to tell you everything.
About Sterling.
About your father.
About mine.
But every time I looked at you and Lily, I remembered what was most important.
Keeping you safe.
Daniel wiped his eyes.
The letter continued.
The person who started this is still alive.
The person who ended it is closer than you think.
Trust Renee.
She is not her family.
She is the only person trying to stop them.
Daniel looked up.
Renee was silent.
“She believed you.””
Renee nodded.
“She believed in you.””
The final letter was different.
Short.
Almost like a goodbye.
Daniel,
If I don’t get the chance to say this myself, I need you to know something.
You were never weak because you trusted people.
The world will tell you trust is foolish.
It isn’t.
Trust is what makes us human.
Protect Lily.
Give her the life we wanted.
And please forgive me.
Because I loved you enough to leave.
Daniel couldn’t continue.
He closed the letter.
The pain was overwhelming.
But underneath it was something else.
Understanding.
Sarah hadn’t abandoned him.
She had sacrificed herself.
Then they found the hidden message.
Inside the box was a small device.
A recording.
Sarah’s voice filled the room.
Daniel froze.
“Daniel.””
His entire body reacted.
Because it was her.
Not a memory.
Not a photograph.
Her voice.
“I know you’re probably angry.””
A weak laugh.
“I would be angry too.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“But if you’re hearing this, it means you found the truth.””
The recording continued.
“The person behind everything is not Ethan.””
Renee looked shocked.
Daniel opened his eyes.
“What?””
Sarah continued.
“Ethan is guilty. He made terrible choices. But he was manipulated.””
A pause.
“The person who controlled everything was someone nobody suspected.””
Daniel and Renee looked at each other.
Then Sarah said:
“The person closest to Arthur Sterling.””
The recording stopped.
Daniel stared.
“Who?””
Then the device played one final sentence.
A whisper.
“Look at the board.””
They returned to Sterling Global immediately.
The board.
The answer had been there all along.
Thomas.
Marcus.
Executives.
Investors.
Everyone.
But Sarah had said the person closest to Arthur.
Not the person closest to Renee.
Someone older.
Someone who had been there from the beginning.
Claire accessed old board records.
Then stopped.
Her face changed.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“You need to see this.””
She turned the screen.
A photograph.
Arthur Sterling.
Michael Hayes.
And one more person.
A woman.
Daniel recognized her.
Because he had seen her before.
In old photographs.
In the background.
Always beside Arthur.
“Who is she?””
Renee whispered:
“My father’s first wife.””
Daniel froze.
“Your mother?””
Renee nodded.
But then Claire pointed to the document.
A name.
A name that changed everything.
“Her name isn’t what we thought.””
Daniel looked closer.
The woman who supposedly died decades ago.
The woman everyone believed was gone.
Was still alive.

And her identity was:
Victoria Sterling.
