Chapter 11: The Return of the Forgotten Heir

The board meeting did not end.

It exploded.

Executives began talking over each other.

Lawyers whispered.

Phones appeared.

Everyone suddenly wanted information.

Nobody wanted answers.

Because answers had consequences.

Thomas remained standing.

“Renee, this accusation is serious.””

“Yes.””

“Do you understand what you’re suggesting?””

“Yes.””

“You’re accusing a member of your own family.””

Renee looked at him.

“I’m investigating a crime.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel felt something change.

For the first time, Renee wasn’t defending herself.

She was attacking.

Thomas looked around.

“Where is your evidence?””

Renee nodded toward Daniel.

He placed a drive on the table.

“This contains financial records, internal communications, and archived documents.””

Thomas stared at him.

“You.””

Daniel looked back.

“Yes.””

“You are not qualified to review corporate information.””

“No.””

Daniel remained calm.

“But I know when people are hiding something.””

A few executives looked uncomfortable.

Thomas smiled.

“You think instinct beats experience?””

“No.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“I think experience is useless when someone is lying.””

The evidence was reviewed by legal teams.

Hours passed.

Then the news broke.

Several suspicious transactions had been discovered.

Enough to launch a formal investigation.

But there was one problem.

Ethan Sterling was still missing.

Nobody knew where he was.

Until that evening.

Renee received a message.

No number.

No name.

Only an address.

And four words.

“Come alone, sister.””

Daniel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Renee looked at him.

“I have to.””

“You absolutely don’t.””

“If it’s Ethan—”

“It’s a trap.””

“I know.””

That surprised him.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“Then why would you go?””

Renee looked at him.

“Because if he wants me alone, it means he’s afraid of what happens if I bring you.””

Daniel understood.

Ethan wasn’t just calling Renee.

He was challenging him.

The location was an abandoned warehouse near the harbor.

Daniel and Renee arrived together.

Despite her instructions.

“You really don’t listen.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You really thought I would let you walk into a trap alone?””

A small smile appeared.

“No.””

The warehouse door opened.

Inside, a man stood near the window.

Older than Daniel expected.

Around forty.

Expensive suit.

Cold expression.

Ethan Sterling.

Renee stopped.

“Ethan.””

He smiled.

“Hello, little sister.””

Daniel immediately disliked him.

Not because of what he had heard.

Because of how he spoke.

Like Renee was still a child.

“You look terrible,” Ethan said.

Renee’s expression hardened.

“And you look exactly like father warned me you would.””

The smile disappeared.

“Careful.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re saying.””

“I know exactly what I’m saying.””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“So this is him.””

Daniel said nothing.

Ethan walked closer.

“The electrician.””

“The father.””

“The widower.””

He smiled.

“You really found the perfect person, didn’t you?””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Sarah was always good at finding people with strong morals.””

Daniel froze.

“You knew Sarah.””

“Yes.””

“Did you kill her?””

The question hung in the air.

Ethan laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because he couldn’t believe Daniel asked.

“You think I’m that careless?””

“Answer me.””

Ethan looked at Renee.

“She told him.””

“Told me what?””

“That’s what Sarah did.””

Ethan stepped closer.

“She believed truth was more important than survival.””

Daniel’s fists tightened.

“You threatened her.””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked him.

“Why admit it?””

“Because threats are not crimes.””

Renee stepped forward.

“You destroyed her life.””

“No.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Your father did.””

“What?””

Ethan smiled.

“Arthur Sterling was not the hero you believe he was.””

Renee went silent.

“He built Sterling Global on secrets.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Ethan pulled out a folder.

Inside was an old document.

Daniel recognized the handwriting.

Arthur Sterling.

“What is that?””

Ethan smiled.

“The truth about your father.””

Renee took the folder.

Her face changed as she read.

Daniel watched.

Because he had seen that expression before.

The moment someone realizes the world they believed in was built on something false.

“What did he do?”” Daniel asked.

Renee didn’t answer.

Ethan did.

“Your father created The Guardian system.””

Daniel frowned.

“We know.””

“No.””

Ethan smiled.

“You don’t.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Your father didn’t just build the system.””

May you like

He paused.

“He built a way to control everyone connected to it.””
