Chapter 2: The Man Who Became Her Shield

Daniel did not accept the offer that day.

He walked out of Renee Sterling’s mansion with the contract still sitting untouched on the table.

The driver offered to take him home.

Daniel refused.

He needed air.

He walked through the crowded streets of Boston, surrounded by people rushing to meetings, carrying coffee, laughing with friends.

Normal life.

A life that suddenly felt very far away.

Twelve million dollars.

Enough money to pay off his mortgage.

Enough money to send Lily to any school she wanted.

Enough money to make sure his daughter never worried about the future.

But there was a problem.

The money wasn’t the only thing Renee was offering.

She was asking him to become part of a world he didn’t understand.

A world filled with cameras, investors, secrets, and people who smiled while planning your downfall.

Daniel had spent his entire life fixing things.

Broken wires.

Broken machines.

Broken houses.

He wasn’t sure he knew how to fix a broken billionaire.

That night, when Lily came home, she immediately noticed something was wrong.

“Dad?””

Daniel looked up from the kitchen table.

“Yeah?””

“You’re making that face.””

“What face?””

“The face you make when you’re thinking too much.””

Daniel smiled.

His daughter knew him too well.

“What if someone offered you something huge,” he asked, “but it meant doing something scary?””

Lily considered this seriously.

“Like fighting a dragon?””

“Something like that.””

“Is the dragon dangerous?””

“Yes.””

“Is someone else getting hurt if you don’t fight?””

Daniel paused.

“Yes.””

Lily shrugged.

“Then you fight.””

Children had a way of making complicated things simple.

The next morning, Daniel called Renee.

“I have conditions.””

When Renee answered, she sounded surprised.

“I’m listening.””

“No cameras following me without permission. No using my daughter for publicity. No pretending outside what we agreed.””

“Agreed.””

“And if someone tries to hurt you, I’m not going to play along with some fake relationship.””

There was silence.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I’ll help you because you need help. Not because I’m getting paid.””

For a moment, Renee said nothing.

Then quietly:

“That’s exactly why I called you.””

Three days later, Daniel Hayes entered the world of Sterling Global.

And immediately realized he had stepped into a war.

The first event was a charity gala held inside one of Boston’s most expensive hotels.

Daniel stood beside Renee wearing a suit that felt uncomfortable.

He had repaired power systems in buildings worth hundreds of millions.

But wearing designer clothes and shaking hands with CEOs made him feel like an actor who forgot his lines.

Renee noticed.

“You look terrified.””

“I am.””

“That’s comforting.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re joking?””

“For the first time in weeks.””

She smiled.

It was the first real smile he had seen from her.

Not the public smile.

Not the billionaire smile.

A real one.

Then the doors opened.

And Marcus Vale walked in.

Daniel immediately felt Renee become tense.

Marcus was everything Daniel wasn’t.

Tall.

Perfectly dressed.

Confident.

The kind of man who looked comfortable in any room.

He approached with a surprised expression.

“Renee.””

She didn’t respond.

Marcus glanced at Daniel.

“And who is this?””

Daniel answered before she could.

“Daniel.””

Marcus smiled politely.

But his eyes didn’t match.

“I don’t believe we’ve met.””

“That’s because we haven’t.””

Marcus looked back at Renee.

“I heard you were doing better.””

“I am.””

“Good.””

The silence was uncomfortable.

Then Marcus lowered his voice.

“We need to talk.””

“No.””

His expression changed.

“Renee.””

“You made your choice.””

“That’s unfair.””

Daniel almost laughed.

Unfair?

A woman diagnosed with a life-threatening illness was abandoned, and somehow she was the unfair one?

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Maybe not.””

His voice remained calm.

“But I know what leaving someone alone looks like.””

Marcus’s face tightened.

For a second, Daniel saw anger.

Not sadness.

Not regret.

Anger.

Then Marcus walked away.

Renee watched him disappear into the crowd.

“He’s dangerous,” she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he doesn’t think he lost me.””

May you like

She looked toward Marcus.

“He thinks he owns me.””
