Chapter 6: The Woman From His Past

Daniel stared at the photograph until his eyes hurt.

It couldn’t be real.

The picture showed Renee Sterling standing outside a hospital.

She looked younger.

Maybe twenty-five.

Beside her was Sarah.

His Sarah.

His wife.

The woman who had died four years ago.

Daniel’s hands trembled.

He flipped the photograph over.

On the back was a date.

Eight years earlier.

And one sentence:

“She knew before you did.””

Daniel didn’t sleep.

He sat at the kitchen table until sunrise, staring at the image.

Every memory he had of Sarah suddenly felt different.

Not false.

Never false.

But incomplete.

There were pieces missing.

Pieces he never knew existed.

When Sarah was sick, she had always been private.

Doctors said her cancer was aggressive.

She accepted it.

She never blamed anyone.

She never talked about unfinished business.

But there had been moments.

Strange moments.

Times when Sarah seemed afraid.

Times when she would wake up from nightmares and refuse to explain.

Daniel always thought it was the illness.

Maybe it wasn’t.

At 7:15, he called Renee.

She answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

“Did you know my wife?””

Silence.

A long silence.

That was enough.

“You did.””

“Daniel—”

“Did you know Sarah?””

“Yes.””

His jaw tightened.

“How?””

Renee sounded like she was fighting tears.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

“When I understood everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

He closed his eyes.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know how.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“Start talking.””

Renee took a deep breath.

“Eight years ago, my father’s company was developing a medical technology project.””

“What kind of project?””

“A revolutionary treatment system.””

“For cancer?””

“Yes.””

Daniel felt numb.

“Sarah was involved?””

“Not directly.””

“Then why is she in that picture?””

“Because she helped expose something.””

Daniel stood.

“What?””

Renee’s voice became quiet.

“My father discovered someone inside Sterling Global was stealing research data.””

Daniel frowned.

“And Sarah found out?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

Renee sounded exhausted.

“But I know this.””

“What?””

“My father trusted your wife.””

Daniel looked away.

“Sarah never told me.””

“Because she was protecting you.””

That sentence hurt.

Because it sounded exactly like something Sarah would do.

Always protecting others.

Always carrying pain alone.

“Why didn’t you contact me after she died?””

Renee hesitated.

“Because my father told me not to.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“He said if anything happened to Sarah, I was not supposed to approach you.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

Daniel felt anger rising.

“My wife died, and your family kept secrets from me?””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I spent four years believing I knew everything about her.””

Renee whispered:

“You knew who she was.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“But not everything she carried.””

That hurt because it was true.

Two hours later, Daniel arrived at Sterling Global.

He didn’t care about security.

He didn’t care about appearances.

He needed answers.

Renee was waiting.

She looked exhausted.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Who was Sarah to you?””

“A person my father respected.””

“That’s not enough.””

Renee nodded.

“My father believed Sarah discovered evidence of financial crimes inside the company.””

“Who was involved?””

“We think Thomas Whitaker.””

Daniel remembered the board member.

“And Marcus?””

Renee looked away.

“Marcus’s family has worked with Sterling for decades.””

Daniel understood.

Everyone was connected.

Everyone had something to lose.

Then Renee said:

“There’s something else.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What now?””

“My father didn’t leave that note for you because he trusted you.””

“Then why?””

“Because he knew something about you.””

Daniel waited.

Renee opened another file.

Inside was a document from years ago.

Daniel read the first line.

His name.

His father’s name.

And a statement that made his entire world shift:

“Daniel Hayes is the only surviving witness to the original Sterling investigation.””

Daniel looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Renee’s expression was filled with fear.

“It means your father knew mine.””

Daniel felt the room spin.

“My father died when I was twelve.””

“I know.””

“He never mentioned Sterling.””

“Maybe he couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Renee looked at him.

“Because someone killed the truth before they killed the people protecting it.””

Daniel stared at the documents.

The billionaire.

The company.

The conspiracy.

The strange phone call.

None of it was random.

He had thought he entered Renee Sterling’s world.

But now he realized something terrifying.

May you like

Renee Sterling had entered his.

And the secret they were uncovering had started long before either of them knew each other existed.
