Chapter 10: The Name Written in Sarah’s Final Report

Daniel could not move.

The words on the page seemed impossible to understand.

“Subject: The person closest to Renee Sterling.””

His fingers tightened around the document.

For four years, he had lived with the pain of unanswered questions.

Why did Sarah become distant during her final months?

Why did she hide phone calls?

Why did she keep documents locked away?

Why did she sometimes look at him like she wanted to say something but couldn’t?

He had always assumed it was fear.

Fear of death.

Fear of leaving him and Lily behind.

But now he wondered if Sarah had been afraid of something else.

Someone else.

Renee stood beside him, her face pale.

“Daniel…”

He didn’t look up.

“Who is it?””

Nobody answered.

Victoria looked away.

Claire stepped backward.

Even Renee seemed afraid of the answer.

Daniel raised his voice.

“Who is it?””

Renee slowly reached for the report.

“Let me see.””

He handed it to her.

Her eyes moved across the page.

The more she read, the more her expression changed.

Confusion.

Shock.

Then disbelief.

“No.””

Daniel watched her.

“What?””

“This can’t be right.””

“Who is it?””

Renee looked up.

And for the first time since Daniel met her, the billionaire heiress looked completely powerless.

“It’s impossible.””

“Renee.””

Her voice dropped.

“The person Sarah investigated…”

She swallowed.

“It was my brother.””

The room became silent.

Daniel stared at her.

“Your brother?””

Renee nodded slowly.

“My half-brother.””

“Who?””

“Ethan Sterling.””

Daniel had heard that name before.

Not from the news.

From the documents.

Ethan Sterling.

The missing heir.

The man who disappeared from public life almost ten years ago.

“What happened to him?”” Daniel asked.

Renee looked toward the window.

“My father said he left.””

“But?””

“But I never believed that.””

Ethan Sterling had always been the family mystery.

Arthur Sterling’s first child.

The son everyone expected to inherit the company.

The one trained from childhood to become the next leader.

But Ethan was different from his father.

While Arthur cared about innovation and reputation, Ethan cared about control.

According to Renee, Ethan believed power should never be shared.

“He hated that my father trusted employees,” Renee said.

“He thought everyone had a price.””

Daniel looked at the report.

“And Sarah found out?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Renee sat down.

“My father hired Sarah as an outside consultant.””

Daniel frowned.

“My wife was a consultant?””

“She was brilliant with data analysis. She noticed patterns other people missed.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“That sounds like her.””

Renee looked at him.

“You really loved her.””

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.””

“She must have been special.””

“She was.””

A pause.

“Then you understand why she couldn’t ignore what she found.””

Daniel looked back.

“What did she find?””

Renee took a deep breath.

“Ethan was moving company assets into private accounts.””

“Stealing?””

“Not just stealing.””

She looked at the report.

“Building something.””

“What?””

“A private network.””

Daniel frowned.

“For what?””

Renee hesitated.

“To control Sterling Global if my father died.””

Daniel understood.

A plan.

A takeover.

Before Arthur’s death.

Before Renee became CEO.

Everything suddenly connected.

The illness.

The board.

The attacks.

Marcus.

The timing.

Someone had been waiting.

That night, Daniel visited Sarah’s grave.

He hadn’t been there in months.

Not because he forgot her.

Because every visit felt like opening a wound.

He stood there holding the report.

“I wish you told me.””

The wind moved through the trees.

“I wish you trusted me enough.””

His voice cracked.

“But I understand why you didn’t.””

Because Sarah always believed protecting people meant carrying the burden alone.

A habit that had frustrated him when she was alive.

A habit he now finally understood.

“You were trying to save us.””

A voice behind him answered.

“She was.””

Daniel turned.

Renee stood several feet away.

He was surprised.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you?””

She looked at Sarah’s grave.

“Because I owe her.””

Daniel studied her.

“What happened between you two?””

Renee was quiet.

Then she said:

“Sarah saved my life.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“Before my diagnosis. Before everything.””

She looked down.

“Ethan found out Sarah was investigating him.””

“And?””

“He tried to scare her.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What did he do?””

“He threatened her.””

The anger inside Daniel grew.

“But Sarah didn’t stop.””

“No.””

Renee smiled sadly.

“That was Sarah.””

Daniel looked at the grave.

“She never gave up.””

“No.””

Renee looked at him.

“And neither do you.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel asked:

“Why did my father and Arthur trust each other?””

Renee answered softly.

“Because they both believed the truth mattered more than survival.””

Daniel looked at her.

“And what happened?””

Renee’s eyes filled with sadness.

“They were both punished for it.””

The next morning, the emergency board meeting began.

Renee entered the room wearing a black suit.

Daniel walked beside her.

The room was filled with executives, lawyers, and investors.

Everyone expected a sick woman fighting for her position.

They didn’t expect someone ready for war.

Thomas Whitaker stood.

“Renee, before we begin, I want to say that everyone here respects your courage.””

Daniel almost laughed.

The same fake sympathy.

The same careful words.

Thomas continued.

“But the company requires stability.””

Renee sat down.

“I agree.””

The room looked surprised.

Thomas paused.

“You do?””

“Yes.””

She placed a folder on the table.

“Which is why we need to discuss the stability of the people trying to remove me.””

The room changed.

Thomas’s expression tightened.

“What is this?””

“Evidence.””

Daniel watched as several executives exchanged nervous looks.

Renee continued.

“For years, Sterling Global has experienced unauthorized transfers of company assets.””

Nobody moved.

“And those transfers connect to accounts controlled by someone who was believed to be gone.””

Thomas stood.

“This is inappropriate.””

“No.””

Renee looked directly at him.

“This is overdue.””

She opened another file.

“Ethan Sterling.””

The name shocked everyone.

Whispers filled the room.

Daniel watched Thomas carefully.

For one second.

Only one.

Fear appeared.

May you like

Then disappeared.

But Daniel saw it.
