Chapter 9: The Woman Who Held the Missing Truth

I stared at the photograph for nearly a minute before anyone noticed.

The woman standing beside my grandfather looked impossible.

Same dark hair.

Same eyes.

Same small scar near her eyebrow.

A scar I had carried since childhood.

Julian saw my expression.

“What?””

I handed him the phone.

His face changed.

“That’s not possible.””

Marcus immediately came closer.

“What is it?””

Julian showed him.

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Because my brothers didn’t look confused.

They looked afraid.

“What?”” I asked.

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“Elena…”

His voice was different.

Careful.

“You know this woman?””

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

I stared at the picture.

“I’ve never seen her before.””

Julian zoomed in.

“There’s a date.””

I looked.

The photograph was taken thirty years ago.

Before I was born.

Before my parents were married.

Before anyone knew I would exist.

“So who is she?””

Nobody answered.

Then my father walked into the room.

And when he saw the photograph…

He stopped.

That was when I knew.

He knew.

“Dad?””

He looked at the picture.

Then at me.

“Where did you get this?””

My voice became quiet.

“Someone sent it.””

His expression changed.

“Who?””

“An unknown number.””

He sat down slowly.

A man who had faced business wars, political pressure, and personal attacks without fear.

But this photograph scared him.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“There are things you were never supposed to know.””

My stomach tightened.

“About who?””

He looked at the picture.

“About your mother.””

The room froze.

“My mother?””

I had lost my mother when I was young.

She died in an accident.

At least, that was what I had always been told.

“What does she have to do with this?””

My father closed his eyes.

Then he said:

“That woman is your mother’s sister.””

I felt the room spin.

“What?””

“She was your aunt.””

“Was?””

My father looked away.

“She disappeared before you were born.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, my father whispered:

“Because she was connected to Victor Laurent.””

The same name.

Again.

Always the same name.

I felt anger rising.

“Everyone knew something except me.””

My father looked hurt.

“We wanted to protect you.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You wanted to protect the family.””

Silence.

Because I was right.

For years, everyone had decided what I could handle.

But nobody asked me.

Nobody trusted me with the truth.

I walked away.

Not because I hated them.

Because I needed space to breathe.

Outside, I sat in the garden.

The same garden where I used to play as a child.

But suddenly, my entire history felt unfamiliar.

Who was my mother really?

Why had everyone hidden her sister?

Why was Vanessa connected to all of this?

An hour later, Marcus found me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“No.””

I searched his face.

“You didn’t?””

“No.””

That surprised me.

Marcus had always known everything.

“I swear.””

I believed him.

Because Marcus was terrible at lying.

“Then find out.””

He nodded.

“We will.””

My phone rang.

Vanessa.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

“You found the picture.””

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You sent it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You don’t care about truth.””

“No?””

“No. You care about winning.””

A pause.

Then she said:

“You’re more like your mother than I expected.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you know about my mother?””

“She knew everything.””

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa became quiet.

Then:

“She knew your grandfather’s biggest secret.””

I stood.

“What secret?””

But Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she said:

“Ask your father why your mother was investigating Blackwood Holdings before she died.””

The call ended.

I stood frozen.

Investigating?

My mother?

The woman I remembered as gentle and kind?

Could she have known something?

Could her death have been connected?

That night, nobody slept.

The investigation changed direction.

We weren’t just looking into Vanessa anymore.

We were looking into the past.

And the past had been waiting.

The next morning, Julian discovered something hidden in old family records.

A sealed document.

Written by my grandfather.

The title was simple.

*The Elena Protection File.*

My hands shook.

“Why would my name be on this?””

Marcus opened it carefully.

Inside was a letter.

Only one page.

Only a few sentences.

But they changed everything.

*If Elena ever discovers the truth, she must know this was never about money.*

I read the next line.

And my heart stopped.

*She was protected because someone inside our family tried to destroy her before she was even born.*

I looked at my brothers.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly…

May you like

The enemy was no longer outside.

The enemy had always been closer than we imagined.
