Chapter 12: The Betrayal Inside the Bloodline
Richard Blackwood sat across from me like we were family having dinner.
That was the most disturbing part.
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t nervous.
He wasn’t afraid.
He looked comfortable.
Like he had been waiting for this moment his entire life.
Vanessa sat beside him.
Her expression was different from the woman I had seen at the gala.
There was no fake smile.
No performance.
Only confidence.
And that scared me.
Because confident people believed they had already won.
Adrian stood several feet away.
For once, he looked like he didn’t belong in the room.
Because he finally understood.
He had never been the main player.
Only a piece.
Richard looked at me.
“You look just like your mother.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Don’t mention her.””
His smile faded slightly.
“She was a remarkable woman.””
“You killed her.””
The restaurant went silent.
Richard didn’t react.
“I knew you would think that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
His voice remained calm.
“Because your father taught you to believe it.””
My father.
Always another layer.
I leaned forward.
“You destroyed my family.””
Richard smiled sadly.
“No.””
He looked around.
“Your family destroyed itself.””
Vanessa spoke.
“He’s right.””
I turned to her.
“You expect me to believe anything you say?””
“No.””
She looked directly at me.
“I expect you to listen.””
I laughed.
“You tried to ruin my life.””
“I tried to expose the truth.””
“You used my husband.””
“Yes.””
Her honesty surprised me.
“I used Adrian.””
She glanced at him.
“He was easy.””
Adrian looked away.
The truth hurt.
But he deserved it.
Richard folded his hands.
“Your grandfather stole something from my family.””
I stared.
“What?””
“The Laurent legacy.””
“That’s a lie.””
“Is it?””
He looked at me.
“Did your grandfather ever tell you why Victor Laurent lost everything?””
I said nothing.
“Because he discovered something.””
“What?””
Richard leaned closer.
“The Blackwood family trust was built on a secret.””
My heart tightened.
“What secret?””
He smiled.
“The kind your mother died trying to reveal.””
The room became cold.
I hated that part of me wanted to believe him.
Because villains rarely told complete lies.
They mixed truth with deception.
That was how they won.
“You expect me to trust you?””
“No.””
Richard looked almost amused.
“I expect you to investigate.””
That surprised me.
He continued.
“Your mother did.””
I stared.
“She found documents proving your grandfather betrayed Victor.””
“Then why didn’t she show anyone?””
“Because she discovered something worse.””
“What?””
Richard looked at me.
“She discovered who your grandfather was protecting.””
A pause.
“Who?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Instead, he looked at Adrian.
“Your husband knows.””
Every eye turned toward Adrian.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stood.
“Adrian.””
He looked terrified.
“I don’t know what he’s talking about.””
Richard smiled.
“Of course you do.””
“No.””
“You found the documents.””
Adrian shook his head.
“I found nothing.””
Richard laughed.
“You really are pathetic.””
I watched Adrian carefully.
Because for the first time…
I wondered if he had been hiding something from me again.
“Elena.””
Adrian looked at me.
“I swear—”
“Stop.””
My voice was quiet.
But powerful.
“I need the truth.””
He froze.
Then slowly reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
My heart sank.
“You had something.””
He looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
He looked at Richard.
“Of him.””
Richard smiled.
Adrian placed the envelope on the table.
“I found this months ago.””
I opened it.
Inside was another document.
A transfer agreement.
But not for the Blackwood Trust.
For something else.
Something older.
Something connected to my grandfather.
I read the signature.
And my blood turned cold.
Because the person who signed it…
Was my father.
I looked up.
My father’s name was there.
The room blurred.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
My father.
The man who protected me.
The man who loved me.
The man who spent his life teaching me honesty.
Had signed a document connected to the secret.
I looked at Richard.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s why everything happened.””
I looked at Adrian.
“You knew?””
“I found it after we got married.””
My heart broke.
“Another secret.””
He looked down.
“I was going to use it.””
At least he admitted it.
At least he didn’t pretend.
I stood slowly.
Everyone watched me.
My entire life had become a collection of hidden truths.
My husband betrayed me.
My family hid things from me.
My enemies knew more about my history than I did.
But one thing had changed.
I was no longer the woman standing silently beneath a chandelier while someone else controlled the story.
I was Elena Blackwood.
And I was done being a piece on someone else’s board.
I looked at Richard.
Then Vanessa.
Then Adrian.
“You all made the same mistake.””
Richard raised an eyebrow.
“What mistake?””
I walked toward the door.
“You thought knowing my past meant you controlled my future.””
Nobody spoke.
I stopped.
“You’re wrong.””
Outside, my brothers were waiting.
Because they had followed me.
Because they finally understood.
I didn’t need protection.
I needed allies.
As I walked away, my phone received one final message.
From my father.
Only three words.
*I need forgiveness.*
I stared at the screen.
Because now I had to answer the hardest question of all.
May you like
Could I forgive the people who hurt me…
If the truth finally gave me the power to destroy them?
