Chapter 5: The Mistress With a Dangerous Secret

Vanessa had always seemed like a woman who wanted one thing.

Adrian.

But I was beginning to realize I had misunderstood her completely.

She didn’t want my husband.

She wanted his empire.

And maybe she had wanted it long before I ever entered the picture.

Julian enlarged the photograph on his computer.

The image became clearer.

Adrian was younger.

Vanessa looked younger too.

They were standing outside a hotel.

But the date on the photo made my chest tighten.

Three months before Adrian and I met.

“She knew him before me,” I whispered.

Julian nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why did she pretend they met recently?””

“That’s the question.””

I looked at the photo again.

There was something strange.

Something I couldn’t explain.

Vanessa’s hand was not holding Adrian’s.

It was holding a folder.

A black folder.

Julian noticed.

“Interesting.””

“What?””

“The folder.””

I looked at him.

“You think it matters?””

“I think everything matters.””

That was Julian.

He never ignored details.

While most people saw a photograph, Julian saw patterns.

Connections.

Weaknesses.

“The problem,” he said, “is that Vanessa isn’t just a mistress.””

“What is she?””

He turned his laptop toward me.

On the screen were business records.

“Vanessa Laurent.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“That’s her real name.””

I stared.

“She lied about her name?””

“Not exactly.””

Julian continued scrolling.

“She changed it legally five years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because her original last name was Laurent.””

I waited.

Then I understood.

The Laurent family.

A powerful investment family.

One that had collapsed after a financial scandal years ago.

“Her father?””

“Victor Laurent.””

My stomach tightened.

I knew that name.

Everyone did.

Victor Laurent had been accused of financial fraud.

He disappeared before the trial.

“Why would his daughter be around Adrian?””

Julian looked at me.

“Maybe because Adrian was involved.””

The room became silent.

“No.””

Julian didn’t react.

“Elena.””

“No.””

I stood.

“Adrian has done terrible things, but—”

“But you don’t want to believe he could do more.””

I looked away.

Because Julian was right.

Part of me still struggled to accept it.

Eight years of marriage didn’t disappear overnight.

Even after betrayal.

Even after violence.

Your heart needed time to catch up with reality.

My phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Did you find something?””

His voice was serious.

“Yes.””

I immediately knew.

“What?””

“There are missing financial records connected to Whitmore Industries.””

“How much?””

“Millions.””

I closed my eyes.

Julian looked at me.

“Fraud?””

“Possibly.””

Marcus continued.

“And Elena…”

“What?””

“There’s something else.””

I waited.

“Vanessa has been trying to gain access to Whitmore’s private accounts for years.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“We’re still investigating.””

The pieces began connecting.

The affair.

The charity event.

The public humiliation.

Maybe none of it was random.

Maybe Adrian and Vanessa had planned something.

My marriage had not just been destroyed by betrayal.

It might have been destroyed by a conspiracy.

That evening, I returned to the Whitmore mansion.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed answers.

The house looked exactly the same.

The same flowers.

The same furniture.

The same photographs.

But it no longer felt like home.

A staff member opened the door.

“Mrs. Whitmore.””

I corrected her.

“Elena.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Yes, ma’am.””

Inside, everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

I walked into Adrian’s office.

The place where he had hidden so many things.

I opened drawers.

Checked files.

Looked through documents.

Then I found it.

A hidden compartment behind a bookshelf.

Inside was another black folder.

The same kind Vanessa had been holding in the photograph.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Contracts.

Bank records.

And one name appeared repeatedly.

*Vanessa Laurent.*

My heart raced.

Then I found something worse.

A letter.

Written by Adrian.

Five years earlier.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

*When Elena discovers the truth, everything must already be transferred.*

I stopped breathing.

Transferred?

I kept reading.

And every line destroyed another piece of the man I thought I knew.

Adrian had not planned to leave me.

He had planned to use me.

My family name.

My connections.

My reputation.

Everything.

A sound behind me made me turn.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

His face was pale.

Because he knew exactly what I had found.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I held up the letter.

“What is this?””

He swallowed.

“Elena…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“Don’t lie to me again.””

He stepped forward.

“I can explain.””

“You always say that.””

His eyes filled with something I couldn’t recognize.

Fear.

Regret.

Or maybe just fear of being caught.

“How long?”” I asked.

He looked confused.

“What?””

“How long were you planning to destroy me?””

His face changed.

And that answer was enough.

Because silence was sometimes more honest than words.

I placed the letter on the desk.

“I trusted you.””

“Elena—”

“I defended you.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“I chose you.””

His voice became desperate.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen this way.””

“What way?””

I laughed sadly.

“Me finding out?””

He looked down.

That was the moment I finally accepted the truth.

The man I loved was gone.

Maybe he had never existed.

Maybe I had only loved the version of him he wanted me to see.

I walked past him.

But before I reached the door, he said something that stopped me.

“Vanessa is not your enemy.””

I turned.

“What?””

His face was filled with fear.

“She’s using me too.””

I stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian looked at me.

And for the first time…

He looked truly terrified.

“She never wanted me.””

A pause.

“She wanted something that belongs to your family.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

May you like

Adrian whispered:

“The Blackwood inheritance.””
